“Amazing stay”
Reviewed 15 August 2013

Admittedly, we were upgraded to a suite, which was really a one bedroom apartment with 1 1/2 baths. We didn't need it, but it clearly made the stay spectacular. On the way there, the cruise to the Geiranger Fjord was often breathtaking, and to be able to view it from our room was fabulous. There are waterfalls, the fjord and mountains visible from many points in the hotel. The hotel has a nice indoor/outdoor swimming area, and people really enjoyed the hot tub and patio area on a warm and sunny day The rooms were beautifully furnished and the master bath large and modern, although I don't quite get why they have showers without a door so that the water goes all over the floor. We had a fine buffet supper in the hotel. This was my favorite fjord and hotel, but by the last day we were there, the town and sights were so beseiged with cruise ships that it took away from the immense beauty of the area. The staff of the hotel was incredible and actually saved us from missing the first leg of our trip back to Oslo. They had told us we could get the bus right in front of the hotel. Fortunately, they realized that it did not stop there that day and they rushed us into town to catch the bus. Perfect finish to 2+ weeks in Norway.

Stayed here on a tour. We did not have a fjord view, but we did have a view over looking a garden and large waterfall. Rooms were clean, Large nice lobby, great place to meet and have a drink with friends before dinner. Dinning room looked out on the fjord. Nice white linens on the tables. Evening and breakfast buffet was good with lots of tasty choices. Good service for as busy as they were. It is a historic hotel in a beautiful location, Royals have stayed at this hotel over the years. Since we were with a tour, I do not know our room price, but as others have stated, rooms with great views are going to cost more.

Being returnung costumers, we know wht to expect from Union Hotel, and they rarely deliver anything less than we expect. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist, and our rooms were ready at noon. Impressive!
We had been upgraded to a room with a fjord view, which is always amazing. The room was clean and large, but a tad warm during the night.

Every employee we met was smiling and helpful. The only thing i have to say about the service level, is that it took too long before our plates were cleared at breakfast.

When staying at Union Hotel, we always have the dinner buffet in the evening. We are ususally very impressed with the cold food (seafood, salads, cold meats and dessert), but the warm food is not what you would expect at that price level. However, I do understand that the bus tourists eat from the same buffet and costs have to be kept to a minimum.

The breakfast buffet was a feast, as always, and was being refilled many times during the time we were there. All sorts of food; bread, salads, warm food, meat, eggs, cereals, drinks were available to us.

Room Tip: Rooms that face the fjord have a view you really can't buy for money.

When we arrived we found our travel agent had made a mistake and booked us for the following night. We were told not to worry, that they had a room for us anyway. Whew! The lady said to wait, she had to check with her supervisor as to what room to give us. We had booked a fjord view room but we would be happy with whatever they had for us as the mistake was on our end, not theirs. She gave us a key and said we would be quite happy with our room. Happy is an understatement. For reasons unknown to us(maybe because we didn't panic and didn't get upset) they gave us a 3 room spa suite. Living room, dining room, huge bathroom and bedroom. It was an $800 value. The bathtub was free standing with windows all around, there was a sauna and a steam room. The view from the living room was of the fjord, the view from the bedroom was a meadow and 7 waterfalls. It was blissfully quiet. We had a wonderful dinner in their fancy restaurant and enjoyed our lovely room as much as we could. They could have put us in ANY room but they choose to upgrade us. That shows real class, in my opinion.

Room Tip: fjord view if possible

My husband and I stayed here during a tour of Scandinavia. If you stay at this hotel make sure you get a room with a view. Many of the rooms face the front of the hotel and have no view. Our room was old and the furnishings needed updating. The hotel is known for its buffets. The room was part of a tour but the normal room rate like most things in Norway is shockingly high.

Nice hotel in Geiranger with lots to do. We are a family with three kids and got the summer family special (2500 NOK) for dinner, breakfast and a four bedroom suite.

The hotel is pretty nice and the pool/spa area is great - the kids spent hours playing around there.

The dinner/breakfast are OK. Sort of reminiscent of what you'd get on a Finnish ferry boat - OK quality, lots of people and a feeling that "I'd like to get out of here soon."

Anyway, the place is OK, and the pool is great. But if I were doing it again, I'd stay in a smaller place in Geiranger or in the surrounding area.

The views of many rooms are absolutely magnificent, looking out at the long view of an incredible fjord. Within steps from the hotel you can stand by rushing waters coming down the mountain. Very good breakfast buffet. But do not buy wine with dinner; many of us went into shock at the high cost, nearly $20, for a small glass of house wine. Even for Norway, this was crazy.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a direct view of the valley and fjord.
