“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2013

We went back to Geiranger and stayed at the Union Hotel again and had a fantastic stay.

The Hotel is situated overlooking the famous Geiranger Fjord and its truely a view you can not match anywhere else.

The Hotel is extreemly comfortable and luxurious and decorated with style and taste. The Spa is sensational with 2 lovely pools, one inside and an extreemly warm hot tub style pool outside again with an amazing view over the Fjord.

The Restaurant was fantastic with a vast array of wonderful fresh sea food and hot meals which were delicious.

The staff were friendly, kind and helpful

To be honest there is Nothing I can say that we didnt like, we had a wonderful family holiday and will go back as soon as we can.

Thoroughly reccomend it and its listed as my number one hotel destination.

My wife and I spent 4 nights at the Union Hotel in September. It caters to conferences and bus tours in the off season. The property is managed by the fourth generation of the Mjelva family and they need to make major changes in front of house customer experience and operations (especially maintenance).

Our experience was mixed at best from the moment we walked in the front door. Only one person staffing the front desk. No help available for luggage ("use the cart by the front door"). Holiday Inn at best and we are paying top-dollar/krone for little or no service.

Some very poor choices for front desk staff. As others have pointed out it feels like some staff are bothered by guest requests. One interaction rated as one of the worst front-desk service experiences of 100's we have had over the years.

The view is wonderful if you have a room facing the fjord.

Some of the rooms are very dated with poor lighting. Maintenance issues abound every place you look. Paint, wall coverings, hallways, etc. Attention to details is totally missing.

World-class spa facility with young people (20's) from Sweden and Eastern Europe running it. Difficult to make appointments when we visited because no staff were available to provide services.

The food: average at best and way overpriced. We ate out two of our four nights.

The Hotel Union may be the best option in Geiranger, but be forewarned that your experience may not be a happy one.

Room Tip: Fjord view rooms are a must given the location. Ask to be in the newest wing with room numbers 470...

Dear Paul B,
Arriving at our hotel, our front desk manager offered you assistant from our porter service for you and your wife luggage. We are sorry if you misunderstood this offer.
Your travel agency had reserved 5 nights for you in a Junior suite. By your check-inn you requested an extra bed room. As the hotel where fully booked we could not offer you a deluxe or spa suite. Though we managed to get you a neighbor hotel room next to your Junior suite. Both located in the spa wing facing the fjord. We also offered you an extra 75 % discount as a gesture for your wife extra bed room.
Your reservation was for 5 nights. We also agreed to change this for you at arrival till 4 nights. Not charging you NOSHOW for the last night.
Our hallways and corridor as well as our hotel room have energy saving light. This is also in the hotel rooms. This is part of the environmental certificate of the hotel. Information is given in all hotel rooms.
The hotel has 3 restaurants. We have noted us that you used one of our restaurants two nights in the row. Our buffet as has now fall courses. From light mix of shellfish caught in the sea outside our west coast delivered direct to the hotel after caught, meat for local butcher, game from the Valleys around, fish from the around found fjords and west coast, desserts form our pastry chefs, cheese from local regional producers (just won the gold medal in the Nordic region in its class) and fruit from local farmers. It is a pity that this food did not match your expectations. We are sorry that you were not guided to choose one of the other restaurants of the hotel.
We are very pleased to see that you enjoyed our Spa with our Norwegian and Scandinavian staff several times.
The Hotel Union Geiranger has been managed by the same family Mjelva for over 100 years. Welcoming guests from all over the world. We are very pleased by the nice comments given by your wife at check-out, but are truly sorry that our services did not meet your expectations.

Best regards
Hotel Union Geiranger

My room's decor was a little outdated. Lighting was poor and finding power points to charge all the electronics one travels with these days was challenging. The free WiFi worked but with insufficient bandwidth for video calls. Uninspiring view of.car park. However room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and bed comfortable. Great views of the fjord from the terrace and pool area on the third floor. No laundry service, but a couple of self service machines with unclear instructions ending "good luck". The hotel is located at the top of a very long steep hill - warning for the unfit and elderly - and the local taxi service is unreliable. Main restaurant is buffet style - crowded, noisy, kids running around. Cold buffet, especially fish, excellent, but hot food unappetising and being kept warm for the whole evening. A la carte restaurant much more civilised with personal service and well prepared dishes - and fantastic fjord views. It's really the views that convince me to rate this hotel as 4 stars, anywhere else it would merit 3. Probably worth paying for fjord view room and avoiding the buffet restaurant if you want peace and quiet.

Context:
Stayed here in June with family in a fjord view room. Price per night: approx. 280 Euros.

Review:
Fjord view rooms have the great views people are raving about, but most rooms have horrid views (carpark, buildings etc.). Since the entire point of staying in Geiranger is the scenery, it really doesn't make sense to stay in anything less than a fjord view room. So yes, pay up or don't complain about the view.

So the view (from fjord rooms at least) is amazing and the thunder of the nearby waterfall is spectacular, but unfortunately the rooms themselves are... inadequate considering the price. The furnishings look rather tired, and are of three-star quality at best (except the lovely wool blankets). The room's only saving grace - excluding the view - is its cleanliness. Honestly, I am baffled by people who claim rooms here are luxurious*.

*Disclaimer: by "luxury", I would expect no less than your average Four Seasons room. "Beyond luxury" to me would mean a stay at the likes of an Aman resort, or the Paris Shangri-La.

Dining options at the hotel are reasonable. The breakfast buffet spread was large, and the food quality was that of an average tour bus hotel. Expect large, maddening tour groups during breakfast and dinner "rush hour". For those seeking a little more peace and quiet, Restaurant Julie (the hotel's a la carte option) offers much better food than the bland and grossly overpriced dinner buffet.

Verdict: Stay.
The discerning traveller might be disappointed by the fact that Hotel Union is more of a good tourist bus hotel than a luxurious grand old dame, but tourists with lower expectations might find it comfortable enough and possibly even luxurious.

Unfortunately for visitors, Hotel Union is one of the best options for travellers visiting Geiranger. But you have been warned!

Side note: I know this is Norway, and prices are higher than most other places, but this hotel is a tad overpriced (for a hotel in a similar price bracket that DOES get it right, check out the Hotel Union Øye).

Room Tip: Cough up the cash for a fjord view room, or don't complain about bad views.

Worth the money for the fjord view! Terrific hotel on all accounts. Indoor pool to swim laps and a very large outdoor spa where we ordered champagne and it was delivered with plastic champagne flutes. Everyone had a great time but the food is expensive for the dinner buffet (495 kroner) so we sat on the lobby couches and ordered food with everyone else. Chicken salad about 185 kroner= $25 US dollars. Wonderful area to walk around and be prepared to take soooooo many pictures.

I am usually not a contrarian, but after reading some of the glowing reviews, I have to disagree on a number of points. The Union is indeed a spectacular looking hotel, especially the lobby. The problems commence at the rooms. The layout is typical of most hotels, but the maintenance of rooms is lacking...ours had lights that did not work, the shabby carpet was not clean (dust visible where the vacuum cleaner didn't go), the mattress had seen better days and the pillows beaten down to thin a shapeless mass. On the positive side, the buffet was excellent, but the dining experience was less the satisfying due to the loud noise level. This may be due to the fact there were large tour groups when we stayed, or it could be just the acoustics. For a more pleasant dining experience, go down to the town center and have a meal on a deck overlooking the fjord. Finally, Geiranger is a lovely little town in a fantastic location....this hotel doesn't live up to standards set by the location.

I am awarding this hotel the maximum rate and would give it extra points if it was possible. This was overall one of the best stays I've had in my life, and I've been to quite a few 5-star hotel throughout Europe. Yet this hotel is supposedly 4 stars but it deserves 5 and a half. This is the perfect example of what a hotel must be. Great accommodation, great customer service, great food and great services on site. This hotel ticks all these boxes and still extra ones, such as "architecture", "history", "character", "scenic views", "gastronomy" and "best-in-class spa".

The hotel is up on a hill overlooking the Geirangerfjord, so you can't really walk there from where the cruise ship will leave you. However, you oly have to phone the hotel on arrival and they will send out someone to pick you up right where you are in just a few minutes. The hotel displays stunning Scandinavian architecture, of which I am an absolute fan, and its privileged location grants it the most amazing scenic views over the fjord. The hotel inside looks pure traditional luxury, nothing like these cold impersonal business hotels that we are nowadays so used to. There are all sorts of antiques and even a collection of classic cars on display in the spacious hall and all over the hotel, thus giving it lots of character and uniqueness. The hotel has a lot of family history indeed.

The spa was out of this world. There are so many "spas" at hotels that end up being a fiasco that I can't even describe how great this one is. They have all the regular features and some extra ones that I haven't quite found elsewhere, plus the views through the glass walls are spectacular, the staff is polite and doesn't interfere, it is not at all crowded (you might be the only one there) and altogether such a relaxing, magnificent experience. Very uncommon these days!

The restaurant, oh dear, what a spectacular dining room, with even an area that had views right over the fjord, I could cry describing it, as landscape cannot get much better than this, and even less in your dining room. And the food was just spectacular. The buffet breakfast was out of this world, a true 5-star buffet, forget your regular 4-star business-hotel buffets. So many things to choose from, and all so elaborate, so fresh, such good quality. The salmon, the fruit, the meats, the foie,... everything.

There were also stylish bars within the hotel and cosy places to sit.

Now, the room. I left this for the end because the other features were so out of this world that they drew my attention away from the room (unlike in most hotels, where this is the only feature to be noted). Well, what can I say. The room was good, perhaps I was expecting it to be bigger and more spectacular given how amazing everything else is, and I found it a little spartan even though it was bright and nicely decorated. It might just be Scandinavian pragmatism. Then again, you get what you pay for, so if you pay for a superior room with a view of the fjord, you might get a spectacular room to match the other spectacular features of the hotel.

On price: well, you can imagine a hotel like this isn't cheap. Of course not. But it's extremely good value, considering that hotels in Scandinavia can easily double the price of those in most European cities for the same standard, due to high taxes and whatever other reasons, so we must have paid around the same to stay here in some rather mediocre hotels in Oslo with minuscule claustrophobic rooms, 1-square-metre toilet rooms and no common areas whatsoever, even though that they were meant to be 4-star hotels (yes, space is a luxury in Olso). OK, perhaps it cost a little more, but still nowhere near as much as it could have, for a hotel of this category in such an expensive part of the world. If you put it like that, it's a bargain.

I am just hoping to return one day and spend a few days in this hotel pampering and spoiling myself, instead of being just a stop in a busy sightseeing schedule.

TIP - Scandinavia is best to visit in the early summer (May - June - July) rather than August onwards. You want the best weather to enjoy some of the best landscapes in the world!

Room Tip: do pay a little extra and get a superior room witha fjord view for a memorable experience.
