I've read many of the reviews and they are all correct - this place has some really great fish (the owner has a stall in the main fish market) and lots of other very typical local dishes. Take a chance and try some - even if you don't really know what you are ordering - it will be a pleasant surprise!
The prices are really low for what you get.
Location is a bit off track and not suitable for a romantic honeymoon dinner - but if it's the quality of food that you look for in a restaurant, then this is the place.

A little off the beaten track, just 20 metres up the road from the popular Buganvilia, (Buganvilla is not the correct spelling!).
The owner of the Duarte is a fisherman who has a Fishmongers in the Portimao market and actually sells fish to most of the "touristy" and consequently more expensive restaurants in the area.
Duartes is a traditional Portuguese establishment with no airs and graces, just the best, freshest fish available.
Thankfully, the honest prices and lack of tourists, (mainly Portuguese customers), tend to keep the food snobs away!
Can you believe that Monkfish in a white bean stew cost only €9!! How much would this cost near the harbour?
Four, (yes 4), grilled chicken steaks in pepper sauce with salad for €6.50, the list goes on.
I have been aware of Duartes for a number of years but only ate there for the first time this October.
We went twice during our stay and I ate the Monkfish on both occasions, delicious!!
Although the menu doesn't offer a massive choice, (apart from a good selection of fish), there is more than enough to keep most people happy.
The service is relaxed and friendly. If you want theatrical or rapid service then this place is not for you.
If you want a nice, relaxed, great quality, traditional meal in a relatively informal atmosphere then you can't go wrong here.

We had 2 evening meals here. Both were first class. Try the white bean stew with monkfish, so tasty, as previous reviewers have said there were specials on every day we passed and on both occasions we ate in Duarte's there were lots of Portuguese eating there. The service is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere very relaxed. The food is good value between 13 and 15 euro per visit for us per person with drinks and the house pudding was scrumptious. Looking forward to our next visit when we return to Alvor in April.
