“The Delightful Delfim - looking forward to next year already!”
Reviewed 30 September 2011

This was our first time at this hotel and I have to say everything about it was fantastic. It was a last minute booking, and as we normally stay in self-catering we were a little aprehenisive about spending money on an all inclusive package particularly if we didn't like the food, as both of us are very particular eaters. However, we needn't have worried as both the quality, amount and variety of food was simply fantastic. It was served on a buffet basis with the main hot dishes of the day cooked on an open grill by the head chef. The restaurant also has a terrace where you can bring your meal outside and eat in the shade. Breakfast lunch and dinner are served in the main restaurant and in the afternoon "snacks" are also served in the adjoining bar beside the pool. "Snacks" is nearly a repeat of lunch without the main dishes as it includes burgers and toasted sandwiches - great for the kids and golfers (who may have just missed lunch) returning from an early morning round. In addition to the quality and variety of food, it was also presented beautifully and the staff were continually managing the presentation by clearing away the finished items and replenishing the serving tables with fresh dishes. It's often the case that some restaurants who serve food on this basis will usually under cater by "front loading" the food for the early diners and those who come late are greeted by what's essentially "left-overs"! This was absolutely not the case, food was served fresh right through the dining times and dishes were continually replenished right up to the finishing time. The staff were excellent in every way - nothing was too much to ask - on the last day I misplaced a bag (after checking out while we waited for the coach to airport). When I brought it to the attention of the staff on the front desk, the whole lot of them (about six people in all) were despatched in all directions looking for my bag - I was very impressed (and embarressed) and they did indeed find my bag (which I apparently left on the 9th floor lobby while I waited for the lift) - this was three hours later and everything was still in it! The hotel had a very spacious feel to it and although we were told it was full while we were there, it didnt feel like it. The hotel was spotlessly clean and cleaning staff were always in evidence working away pretty much all day - every day. The all inclusive package included all drinks, soft & alcoholic (including spirits) & packed lunches for day tours and golfers. The bedrooms were very spacious - we had #918 with a balcony pool / beach view & the beds were very comfortable.
The swimming pool is a very generous size with plenty of room to actually swim with free towels available beside the pool and for those wishing to take a plunge in the Med, the beach is accessed by a walk of about 500mtrs through the hotel gardens. A great attraction running east along the beach are the stunning cliffs / coves which can be explored - a short walk along the rocks reveals a vast number of little hidden beaches and hideaways where one can experience a quieter beach day! Also along this stretch is a Restaurant/ Bar called Canico which is built into the cliff face and accessible from the beach by steps or from the cliffs above by elevator - it's an absolute must visit! During the day they serve drinks & snacks - the food is excellent and as it's very popular, a reservation is required for evening dinner and the food combined with the view is exceptional. Alvor is the local town (a lovely quiet low-rise fishing village) - about 15mins walk away or you can take a taxi or bus which are both right outside the front door. A great fish restaurant in Alvor is the aptly named "Fishermans Restaurant" - you select your own fresh fish and it's cooked on an open grill - wonderful. The hotel owns a number of golf courses and their golfing administrative department is actually located in the main lobby beside reception. As it was a last minute booking for us, we didn't have time to organise our schedule of games for the week (we weren't sure what days we wanted to play in advance), so we rang the hotel before we left and as we were arriving on a sunday (when their golf office would be closed) they advised us to call into them on the monday morning and they would organise everything for us. True to their word, on the monday morning both Margarite and Delio (in the golf department) looked after us very well and organised everything for us. I should say that if you intend playing particular courses on certain days, then booking in advance is definitely advised as it can be quite busy particularly in spring and autumn when the weather is a bit cooler. As it was, we were very flexible time and day wise, so we had no problems. We played at two of their courses; Gramacho and Pinta and both of them were simply stunning courses - it's definitely the only way to play golf! Some information for golfers which might be useful: We hired clubs from clubs2hire.com on line - €55euros (incl insurance) - brand new callaways! - we picked them up in Arrivals at Faro airport - which really beats hawling them all the way and paying €40 euros each way (per set) for the privelige! Green fees per person for patrons of the hotel were €47 euros in Sept (fees are seasonal - also check for special deals they run from time to time) - a buggy is €40euros (payable at the course) and a direct transfer to and from the hotel (for the entire week) is €40euros pp. - which meant we didn't have the hassle of having to hire a car! All in all a faultless hotel in a brilliant location which we would have absolutely no hesitation in recomending it to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a pool/ sea view in # 918 - if you want a great view of the sun-set - choose a room on the ot...

The all inclusive package was very good for the price we paid - could not fault a thing.

The hotel was idealy postioned within walking distance of Alvor and Praie de Rocha. There were also two bus stops right outside the hotel with a regular Eat to waest service covering many of the main Algarve resorts.

The food was could and plentiful an an added touch was Champers at breakfast. All the staff were friendly and helpful and particualrly good was the barman in the sunset bar who was always friendly and courteous. Can't remember his name but I am sure the management will know as he was on duty mmost nights between Sept 18th/26th.

Would certainly stay again

We stayed 10 days paying for a sea view, although all views would be good. The room was very clean although the bath and shower were slightly dated. There was a fair selection of food, fresh fruits, cereals, rolls and a cooked breakfast, plenty of fish choices for dinner as well as meat, pasta and salad. Delicious cakes, roulades and cheesecakes for dessert. Plenty to drink, wine, sangria, beer, coke and juices but the tea is not strong and the coffee bitter. We enjoyed eating on the veranda, some people felt the restaurant busy and as the hotel was full dinner was served in three sittings. Evening entertainment is generally just a singer playing guitar or piano, the entertainment team put on shows twice, but the local town of Alvor is 20 minutes walk away or taxi for 4 euros.
We felt the bad reviews were unfair except the hotel is a bit dated but was kept very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful, they seemed a bit overwhelmed at times but resolved issues quickly when asked e.g. running out of cups or clearing tables.
Pool area is nice and clean although the pool was a little cold but the beach is only a short stroll away and has some nice cafes, beautiful coves and walks over the cliff or into town. Local buses stop at the hotel and there is a courtesy bus but this is too small and many were left behind. It only runs once a day to and from Portimao.
We were delighted to be given a surprise bottle of champagne on my husband's birthday and felt this was a nice personal touch.
I would recommend this hotel and would return again, we are a couple in our fifties but would not recommend for children unless you are prepared to occupy them yourself.

Room Tip: Small balconies in rooms at front of hotel although a nice view inland, pool view also over looks se...

Wife and i in our late fifties and yesterday returned from 8 nights at hotel, we regard ourselves as reasonably well traveled and found that the Hotel was excellent value for money, flight and hotel were booked separately.Room was spacious and good wall thickness made it nice and quiet plus it was clean and comfortable overlooking the pool it had a small fridge and safety deposit box, on the downside the air/con whistled on low speed and furniture was a little dated, the toilet and shower area looked quite new twin washbowls and and a hair dryer.
Possibly down to the time of year there appeared to be plenty of sunbeds around pool and sloping garden area more so towards the end of our stay when the hotel was quieter, i gather the hotel leased/sold out their sunbeds down by the sea which was a shame since there was a 10 euro charge for 2, some bought a small chair or just lay on the sand.
You could walk to the beach down a small path in 5 minutes to a couple of restaurants and continue to the left to a quite scenic area or to the right along duckboards on the beach, if you walked right towards the end of the car park there was a supermarket and roads into town. The pathway was closed in the late evening so If you wanted to go to the town head out of the hotel front, turn left down road then take a right then a left turn and continue along road.I would suggest a taxi for 4 euro's since there were very little pavements to be seen.
We found the food to be quite good, breakfasts were substantial although lacking bacon some days ? there was an abundance of fish in all shapes and forms for evening meals and a varied choice of meats and lovely cakes it could have done with a little more variety in the sweets section we did get tired of cakes and ice cream. Sadly i saw so many people walking around and "eating with their eyes" it begs to wonder if they were brought up on pizza. The afternoon snacks we did not use. We took our own kettle to make a morning cuppa in our room but there was nonstop coffee available.
Champagne, white/red wine and lager on tap also soft drinks, someone asked for diet drinks and red bull which made me smile i sometimes wonder if they expected Magners, Guiness or Chateau Margaux for the price.
The even entertainment was either go upstairs where there's a tv area and a nice quiet lounge area or downstairs where there are evening artists and a bar.
Overall we enjoyed ourselves, yes there was sometimes a party of golfers who "livened up" the evenings in the outside smoking area which could be an issue if you went to bed early. I personally think the management are missing an opportunity not to enhance the pool centre area at night nobody cleaned up any cups etc from there but more so a few solar lights could really improve the scene, the indoor pool needed to be walled off from the entertainment area which deteriorated the surrounding area also now that the hotel is all inclusive it would be advantageous they should improve the walkways into town from hotel.
Personally I found the staff at the reception, restaurant and bars very helpful considering the language barrier it cost me nothing to say Obrigado.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool or tennis court view

Just come back from a week at the Delfim, Excellent weather and lovely grounds in the hotel made for a relaxing break. Close to the beach too, if you go down to the beach turn left for some really lovely little bays.
Staff were all very friendly expecially to our one year old son. The majority of guests seemed to be English too.
Amenities are excellent, with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, spa and gym amongst others. The rooms are also excellent, we stayed in a suite which was a good size, well decorated and came with its own kitchenette area. It also had sunbeds on the balcony which i thought was a nice touch.I would recommend the suites.
Alvor itself is also a nice little town although it is quite a walk from the hotel and seems to be a quiet little place,
A few points to be aware of though if you plan to stay here:
- The food is average, some days choices were limited compared to other all inclusive resorts i have been to. People who are picky eaters or have small children may struggle to find things suitable to eat. The desserts were average with not much choice
- There are no diet drinks available, all soft drinks are full sugar varieties.
- Although there is evening entertainment, this consisted of a man on a keyboard, the upstairs bar in particular lacked atmosphere in the evenings.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a suite,

Good points first! - friendly reception staff and efficient check-in. Good sized balcony with 2 chairs & a table, and our room was spacious and clean and quiet as we didn't hear much noise from other rooms. We were on 4th floor and I was glad, as that felt fairly high up, I would have hated to be on 16th floor, albeit views would have been nice. The location was good, about 15 minutes walk into Alvor, and well placed to take local buses to nearby towns.

The kids' club area was good and our little girl loved the toy castle which sat just outside it next to the kids' pool.

The hotel overall is clean but dated and a bit shabby.

The pool was fine, although it was sometimes difficult to get a free sunbed due to ignorant people leaving towels on them all day and barely appearing to use them - not really the hotel's fault, but a policy to help this would be nice.

Mealtimes were like a canteen serving people who'd not seen food for a week. I thought the food was awful and possibly a reflection on Portugal's financial situation. Quite a lot of it seemed to be tinned. The salad selection and bread each day were ok. Desserts not great, although the occasional, pleasant cake and there was ice cream always available.

No diet drinks at all, although the drinks machines had Pepsi, 7-up & a couple of other full sugar drinks. The other juice drinks machine offered water and various sugary fruit drinks (think Sunny Delight type stuff rather than anything that had been anywhere near any actual fruit). Coffee from machines in restaurant was awful, it tasted like instant, although the coffee machine in the bar area next to the swimming pool did offer some better stuff.

On reflection, I wished we'd gone self catering, as Alvor was a nice resort with plenty of restaurants. We did enjoy our week in the sun, but it was slightly marred by the awful food, as part of a holiday is undoubtedly looking forward to mealtimes & enjoying not cooking.

Adequate hotel for a last minute bit of sunshine, very clean all areas, large pool although cold this time of year, weather was brilliant for September and had a relaxing break, the food that was available was good, although not much choice especially the salads and sweets, and when will hotels understand that cheese and biscuits after our evening meal and not at breakfast, is what we british like. On the downside the hotel has no private area on the beach and 10euros a day for sunbeds is a bit off when on an all inclusive package, there is a signpost pointing to their beach area but the sunbed lady told us they have not paid fees for a couple of years now, so i feel they should state this in their advertising. All in all an OK hotel but have stayed in much better 4 *AI especially in Turkey where they know how to treat you well. As for Portugal it is now very expensive to eat and drink and i think they will price themselves out of the holiday market before long.
