We have returned from the resort on 15 th aug. A fabulous holiday...booked last minute but very impresses with hotel and resort.
It is a family hotel with lots going on , if you want to join in or not.. No pressure. The entertainment team work very hard and translate in 3 languages... Impressed.
The pool is fantastic, beach fabulous although a short distance but a bus service from hotel .. 5 mins, rooms magnificent so big!!!! We had 2 but needed only one!!
Food : huge selection and freshly cooked. Meat, fish and veggie. One restaurant aimed at young children so we used the other one blue I think, but staff so friendly.
Drinks: all inclusive best I have seen .. Real beer , diet coke... Again staff very friendly.
Snack bars served a good selection my little girl loved the selection of ice creams!

Some people have written negative comments about petty things, this hotel is excellent and deserves 4 stars, some people need to read what they are going to! EG if you are an adult couple then don't go if you don't want kids around , go to adult only hotels!!!!!!!!

The worst thing was the British people who moaned ....an embarrassment, get a life and book a villa in the middle of no where I suggest!
most people we spoke to were extremely impressed . So take no notice of the moaning Minnie's !!
We have an 8 yr and 16 yr old and they enjoyed as did we.

I hate people who moan about petty things!!!!! I spoke to the management team to tell them how impressed I was with their hotel, what fantastic people. they are trying to provide a service and keen to improve.
I would definitely go back to this hotel and see it as improving in years to come.

The town of Alvor is also very pretty with a lovely selection of shops, bars and eating places. Also short walk but only 4 euros back in ataxi as it is up hill .
Enjoy this fab hotel

Room Tip: pool view Higher level better view.

We were a family of 4 (2 girls, 4 & 5) staying Aug 8th to Aug 18th 2013 all inc.

Despite all the negative reviews this place is by far one of the best all inc FAMILY based resorts I've been to. The rooms are large and clean but dont account for self catering as there are next to no utensils. You only get one card per family for the room and this is used for the door and room power and you need to use it for drinks etc. No wristbands here.
Fantastic place. Lovely large hotel with a good free wifi range and easy to connect to.
Positives:
DINING.
The food is fresh, good quality, various and of an excellent standard. I dont like fish normally yet was eating shark and bass and all sorts. There are two restaurants. Green and Blue. Blue tends to open an hour after green and green caters for a "childrens menu" but generally both have the same food. They are clean and well staffed helping to clear plates away quickly.
POOL.
The pool is very big with a small kids pool at one end. Its no deeper then about chest height on an average adult. There is plenty of room even with the entertainment going on in the pool. I can't fault this.
LOCATION:
Alvor the town is about 20 / 25 mins walk with young kids (out of buggys) but if you push that bit further into town you are rewarded with some lovely bars and the small marina. There is a great little italian restaurant.
BEACH:
The beach is HUGE! lovely and warm. Sunbeds are 10 euros for 2 with a parasol and that was all day. Same as anywhere really.
TRIPS OUT:
GO TO ZOOMARINE!! Go see the dolpin show. Its well worth it and there is a pool and small aqua park there. A great day this was and brilliant pre show for the dolphins. TOP TIP: Take your swim gear for ZOOMARINE.

NEGATIVES:
SUNBEDS: Yes i was up at 06:45 one morning to get 4 beds for my family. But then sat there while I waited for them to come down for breakfast. They are not locked up and so its a "snooze you lose" kinda way. Its just the way it is. the only way the hotel could stop this is to charge reservations on them i guess but that defeats the object. Just get up and enjoy the sun rising.
TOWN:
The walk into town coming back there is a long hill and this is quite hard for little legs. Consider a taxi.
DOWNSTAIRS BAR:
There is a bar on the -1 floor. This is where the two restaurants are as well as the bar upstairs on the ground floor. This has an "entertainment stage area" but is poorly lad out and the seats are in rows as if in a cinema. We ate faily early and sat with another family we met near to the bar on one of the two "stool height" tables there is.

OVERALL:
An excellent holiday and would book next years if I could afford it right now. Despite what the negatives are I would love to go back here. Its a brilliant place.

The moans of "screaming kids" on other reviews? Your in a family hotel. What did you expect? While we were booking the zoomarine trip with the first choice staff a customer was complaining it was too noisy by the pool and in the bar and the hotel in general. They wanted a peaceful, relaxinig holiday and couldnt sleep at night for the noise??

My answer is this is a family hotel. Your own fault for not reading the description properly. The rooms are very soundproofed and couldnt hear a thing of outside. Best showers Ive been in too.

Room Tip: Book Pool view room for a view, (see below). The other side is not bad but over looks the rural area. If you get above the bar or close to receptoin you can pick up the free wifi.

We stayed at the Alvor Baia between the 2-15 of Aug with our 4 boys, our eldest being 15 and our 12 year old triplets, and were really looking forward to our family break based on the First Choice review of this hotel.. The hotel itself is in an excellent location, and is a 15 minute walk from the centre of Alvor and the beach. From the outside it looks stunning, and the reception area is minimalist, modern and clean, the downside being that the minimalism results in a lack of seating, particularly in the evenings, meaning lots of early nights!

The rooms are modern and clean, and contain 2 plasma screens. One of ours was broken, and the staff changed it promptly. The staff in the main were friendly and obliging, and were very good with our boys. The First Choice reps were friendly, but were not always available when they should have been, and were reluctant to deal with issues, such as the lack of courtesy facilities on our last day, due to a fear of 'getting into trouble with the hotel manager'.

The restaurants have a large selection of food, much of which is repetitive and often cold. However, they were manic at all times, and, with plastic patio furniture which was extremely uncomfortable, screaming children running riot, sneezing all over the salad bar, and touching food with their fingers, as well as flies in the chicken which the chef ignored, we chose to eat in Alvor on numerous occasions, even though we were All Inclusive. On a positive note, the staff were friendly and obliging, and worked hard to quickly clear away dirty dishes and glasses.

With regard to entertainment, if your children are over the age of 8, there is absolutely nothing for them to do. Our boys were bored and ready to come home after a week, which is unheard of. The hotel does not cater for this age group at all, meaning that we were constantly paying out to keep them amused. During the day, the pool entertainment consists of balloon games, and loud music which often contained lyrics inappropriate for children, and in the evening it was a bontempi organ spectacular. Needless to say, we either walked into Alvor or went to bed very early to avoid the monotony of the same repertoire every night, with the exception of Sundays, when we were given a welcome day off!

The pool was fantastic. It is large and there is plenty of room in it for the 1400 guests without an overcrowded feel. It was cold first thing but soon warmed up as the day went on. Sun beds were a huge issue. Fortunately, I had read the trip adviser reviews on this hotel before our stay, so I was up at 7am every morning to secure 3 loungers for the 6 of us. I then had to sit by the pool to ensure that our towels were not thrown on the floor and our beds and parasol stolen. It was ridiculous. We spoke to the rep who stated that they had brought this to the attention of the manager, but he responded that there would be no more loungers for healthy and safety reasons!? There are plenty of grassy areas around the pool that people were being forced to lie on, so why there can't be loungers here is beyond me!

Finally, the lack of a courtesy room is a huge issue. We had to check out of our rooms for 12am, so asked the reps if we could secure one of them for a late check out as we were not being picked up for the airport until 5pm. We were told that we could do this for €40, but not until the day before we were leaving. Therefore, we asked at reception the day before we left and were told that the hotel does not advertise or provide courtesy facilities, and do not allow late check outs at all in August. My husband had discussions with several members of staff about this, but to no avail. We ended up sat in reception from 12 noon, fully clothed with 4 bored children, and no All Inclusive facilities available to us (these end at 12 noon also), only to discover that 4 other families travelling on our flight had been able to keep their rooms on until they left. Needless to say we were fuming.

We are not a family to complain, and have never had to do so before, but to say that this hotel did not meet our expectations is an understatement. It was 'plastic fantastic', and definitely needs to learn from its first full season and improve for next year. We spoke to numerous other families who all had the same opinion, and, although we made the best of our holiday, the fantastic weather, and the beautiful town of Alvor, we will not be returning to this hotel in the future.

Room Tip: Pool facing rooms at the far end of the hotel are great as they are quiet, even at busy times.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Trip Advisor following your recent stay at Hotel Alvor Baia. We value each and every Guests review and appreciate the time you take out to write them.

There are some points in your review that we feel we must comment, being mainly the lack of courtesy rooms. Indeed the hotel was fully booked in the time frame of your stay. Nevertheless we provide an area where clients checking out in the middle of the afternoon can have a bath and perhaps, if they want, change their clothes. This area is the Grand Bar, exterior Bathroom, which has been prepared with benches and hangers and has showers, exactly for this purpose. Meaning that the hotel cannot offer now late check-outs, but has other solutions for its guests.

About the Health and safety reasons, i took this issue to the Reps, after carefully reading your report and any of them gave a reply with this content to a customer. IN reality we do not have any more sunbeds apart from them ones existing already in the pool terrace. The fact that they are not there has to do with the lack of them. Umbrellas, we have many more, but on request because all areas with supports in the Pool are already occupied.

Many thanks for your review,

Kind regards,

I think reviews of this hotel have been well covered, but a perspective for families similar to ours might be useful. We stayed 4-15 Aug, with two kids aged 9 and 6.

Hotel/Apartment: modern, clean spacious, finished to a high standard. Room cleaned daily, new towels when put in bath. Best premises we have stayed in on a med holiday, superb.

Staff/Service: excellent. Staff are friendly, efficient, professional. They love kids and were always high fiving my 9 year old son and saying how pretty my daughter was. First choice reps helpful.

Pool: cold first thing in morning, fine after 11ish. You need to jump in and get wet quickly and move then you are fine! My husband and I spent hours pushing our kids around on a lilo and I only got really cold on one particularly windy afternoon. The sun is very strong in the Algarve, so most days the breeze was a welcome relief. Yes you do need to get sunbeds and use them from early on (my husband got down to pool for an early read most days by 745 and he managed to get two for us). A major problem is large groups of people reserving ten beds in a row. We always share two beds for four of us, but sadly not everyone is that philanthropic.

Green Restaurant/Food: you can take children to blue restaurant, but there is a presumption by the hotel that they will behave well, as blue is meant to be adult friendly. We went to both, but our kids eat out a lot and are well behaved. If you have a crying baby or a screaming toddler, you would probably get dirty looks from the middle aged couples, but the staff don't make you feel unwelcome in blue.

Yes Green is noisy but very friendly and we ate there most of the time because of the kids' buffet and there was less queuing. It was less hassle to hear crying babies in green, than to watch stroppy adults huffing and puffing in blue because there was a queue for hot food!

The food was lovely, loads of fresh fish and meat, my husband stuffed himself every night! I am a veggie - there was always a veggie option but the salads, bread and potatoes were beautiful, so I never missed quorn or lentils! Food was always warm.

Rose wine on tap lovely.

Kids club/poolside activities:

My kids went to kids club once but although the staff were very friendly, it was too babyish for them ( aimed at very young children). This was a shame as they didn't make the friends they might have with an age-related first choice kids club.

Poolside entertainment was based around adults/teenagers -aqua aerobics, water balloon games, conga around the pool etc. great if you like that kind of thing but not our thing!

Evening entertainment: as many have said, it was pretty dire. The poolside ents team mainly ran things, the bar downstairs is small, hot and there are toddlers running everywhere. We chose to eat and head into Alvor.

Alvor: the nicest med village we have stayed in, you can walk there in 15 mins. It is beautiful, quaint, there are go carts and dodgems for kids ( but not many, it's still uncommercialised). There are loads of lovely restaurants and bars, there's a hair braid lady for those with little girls! We loved going in to Alvor at night, it was much better than hanging around the hotel.

Trips: we booked slide and splash with first choice as they will match offers from the operators and with transport ( a coach from the hotel) it was100 euros for four. It's a great water park but take plenty of sun cream, as you do queue a lot!

We also went on a caves and coast boat trip with Alvor Boat trips, which we booked down at the harbour in Alvor. They picked us up in a minibus from our hotel and we sailed from Praia de Rocha. The staff on the boat trip were very charming, the caves are beautiful, there were snacks and drinks and the boat stopped for a swim and a snorkel ( they provide snorkels etc and life jackets for little ones).

This is a beautiful, upmarket hotel for families and the only reason I gave it four stars was the entertainment and the lack of a good kids club for older kids. I would recommended it to families. For couples, if you want somewhere quiet and romantic, not the place for you.

Please if you are off to Alvor this summer, go on a boat trip/to the beach, spend time in Alvor. It's a beautiful place and it was lovely to mix with the locals on Friday and Saturday night, it felt like we got to know the village. If we had stayed around the hotel getting sozzled on free drinks it would have been such a shame. A lovely holiday, thank you Alvor Baia!

Overall i could not be more pleased with my time spent at Avlor Baia. i traveled for a week from the 1st August.

I stayed on a third floor apartment, we did not have the pool view but i would have rather not had as it was alot more private to face the front of the hotel.

the cleanliness of the entire hotel was impeccable, they serve 5 meals a day Breakfast, Snack, Launch, Snack and Dinner, the food was a bit repetitive but was lovely it mainly consisted of Lamb, Steak, Chicken, Pork basically all the meats with rice, Potatoes, Chips and an amazing salad range, it was perfect.

Alcohol was great and the bar staff were amazing!! i did find the alcohol was not very strong at all though but it was unlimited so i really couldnt complain.

I recommend the bar crawl with the reps (who are amazing!!) you go to about 4 or 5 bars in the local club strip which is about 10 minutes away and you get free shots on arrival- however the bar crawl starts a around 11pm and in the local town parties dont really start ill 2/3am so its quiet empty till then.

there are lots of other excursions you can do with the reps, i recommend aquashow which is a water park.

i dont think hotel entertainment is that great but they do make an effort to do something every night, i personally never stayed around for any of it expect the bingo.

there is also a very regular free bus that takes you directly to the beach which is 10 minutes away.

They also have a spa with indoor pool, steam and suna room and Jacuzzi which cost 10 euros a day to use, and the treatments are really cheap with an average of 40/50 euros for a treatment.

the pool always appears to be full but really people just put their towels on the beds and leave them, which is against hotel policy but EVERYONE does it, but if you notice someone has done this you can let the pool staff know and they take the bed and leave a note, which is cruel but sometimes necessary because people literally wake up at the crack of dawn and put their towel on the bed and go off for the day, by 1pm all the beds are taken. Before i went i noticed alot of people mentioning the pool was cold but in my opinion it was fine and no colder or warner than any other outdoor pool.

i recommend this hotel mainly to families but i went with friends and still had an amazing and relaxing time.
