Just arrived back home today and wanted to leave our review.

On arrival the hotel looks amazing, check in was speedy and the staff were very helpful. Our room was ready but we were delayed and didn't arrive until about 4-30pm. Check out is not till 12pm so it's unlikely your room will be ready if you're arriving in the morning.

Our room was lovely, on the 3rd floor overlooking the tennis courts. We didn't really get the sun on the balcony but we were never in it so it didn't bother us. The rooms are cleaned daily and are nice and spacious. We did struggle to put all our clothes away in the wardrobe but there was 5 of us in the room so we did have a lot of stuff. Some of the rooms are quite a walk away from the pool area so be prepared for the chance you may have a bit of a trek!!

There was a vast shortage of umbrellas and sunbeds at the start of the week and beds were being bagged any time from 7-30am. I didn't see the pool guards removing any towels when beds were not used but they did help people try to find free beds when they were struggling. Yesterday we noticed a whole new batch of beds have been delivered and lots more umbrellas - it is so windy in the afternoons that they kept on breaking. A few people have mentioned that they weren't allowed inflatables in the pool so we didn't bother taking ours but when we got there everyone had them - maybe following the reviews they've changed their policy?

They food is ok - not fantastic and like many other people have commented, the restaurants are very noisy and like canteens. It did become quite repetitive after a week. I have to say They are the most relaxed restaurants we have eaten in in a long time - flip flops and shorts were deemed appropriate for evening meals.

The day time entertainment team were good and there is a fab park for the younger children - this does get very very hot through the day so you're better off going after tea. The entertainment on an evening is appalling and almost non existent. There was a parrot show which was ok but that was about it - fortunately, We didn't have to queue long for drinks at the outside bar like some people have mentioned!!! As we have 3 children we always went to the mini disco at 8-30 which was either downstairs or outside. When it was outside it was very windy and you do need a jacket or cardigan. We did try to get a seat inside to watch Carlos the in house singer but seating is very limited on the main floor so the only place to sit was outside in the chilly air or at the downstairs bar but the kiddies would have been bored as there's not much going on.

One last point - the lift situation is a bit of a nightmare!! Be prepared to use the stairs!! The hotel was full when we Were there and in total there is 7 floors so there was often a large queue for the lifts!

Overall we've had a lovely time but feel that we paid a lot of money for poor quality entertainment and average food.

arrived 13th july 2014 for a 2 week holiday.

I will give you the honest truth about this hotel.
This says 4* and i do think its pushing 4 to be honest with you. if your looking for a cheap cheap holiday and great food and room nice and love the beach and dont with too be by the pool then this is the place for you.
we arrived and no drink on arrival like the Thomson rep said. We also had to pay 20 euros per person for the towel for the pool (bring own towel if dont want to pay) so if your a family of 4 then thats 80 euros you have to pay out and get it back on the last day but god knows why you would want 80 euros back on your last day to take home with you. naughty as should just give you a card and you swap towel at the end of the day to get fresh one and get card back or someting.
Rooms perfect, no fault at all, there exactly like you see in the pictures. showers were heaven but said bath and there was a bath but if wanted a bath you would of had to fill with shower head (as you can imagine, freezing by time you have done that) cant fault rooms though.

Food- amazing fish, shark, seabass, salmon, prawns and the chocolate cake, if you go here you will know what I mean about the chocolate cake,it was amazing. breakfast 7-10 and if missed breakfast (anythign like us and lazy) they go a mini brekafast after 10 till about 11:30 then lunch food in restaurant (like evening meal so never did that at lunch as too much) then 3:30-5 did burgers, hot dog, sandwiches then evening meal 7-10 is nice but not posh at all. tried to make it feel nice by getting dressed up but its buffett service and plastic chairs and no nice views to look out at. its get your own drinks.(you just felt both up and down up and down and not enjoying nice quiet romantic meal together)

drinks- naughty main bar upstairs where all entertainment is (NOT ALLOWED TO USE THAT BAR) even though you paid all inclusive, thats for guest who have to pay for drinks. so when you want drink have to use outdoor bar by pool or go downstairs to get it. drinks were nice though but always in plastic cups, even at night, which is a shame.

Pool- doesnt matter what time you get down there if its 8am,9,10 or 11 the loungers were always taken. they have the 30 min rule where as towel will get taken off if away for more than 30 mins and this was never applied. Me and my husband spent most mornings waiting till about 12:30 - 1:00 for a lounger, shame as loads of room for more loungers but hotel just not done. pool bar so busy in the day but tip just use the bar downstairs to get a drink as so much quicker.

Close to Alvor which has small Marina - 10 mins walk, perfect. we ate out 3 times in the 2 weeks and would of done every night. lovely and lots of places, dont get hasselled and really cheap and nice to share bottle of wine and just walk back after lovley meal out.

Beach- they do free bus journeys from outside the hotel to the beach and if you love the beach then perfect as dont need to have the stress of trying to get a lounger. beach was beautiful, so stunning and no food down the beach and drinks alot so would suggest going to local shop oppostie hotel and buy bottled water etc.

I emaield thomson before holiday to say its our anniversary and would they kindly have a bottle of wine or something in our room and they said yes- NEVER HAPPENED. My husband went to reception to see if they could do something nice for me in the room, like flower on the bed or as were all inclusive bring a cocktail up for us but hotel said no we would do this. naughty when there and paid all inclusive so not like we pay for drinks.

Overall this is not a couples place at all, full of kids and even water aerobics all kids music and evening entertainment. This is a lovely place for kids holiday if you love the beach. Hope I have not put you off as like I said food lovley and room and beach, it was just the little things like pool area and paying for towels oh and you have to pay for the safe. 1.5- euroes a day, so 21 euroes to pay out at the start as well if there for 2 weeks. it was just little things like this that made us not feel pampered and special and would not come here again. nice place Alvor though and loved eating out but hotel just wasnt up to scratch. enjoy yuor holiday if you book this and i have given you my honest opinion and im sure you will agree with all comments I made if you do stay here.

one last thing- says WIFI - this drove us mad, no wifi in the rooms or round pool, you would be lucky if got a little wifi round the downstairs bar (not that you need wifi when away but nice to check up on people and just know you have it but this hotel really cant say they have wifi)

Room Tip: All rooms are the same so no need for upgrades or anything.

in our experience as world wide travellers with over 30years experience,
there is very little difference between a GOOD hotel....and a GREAT hotel....
This hotels only fault was a MAJOR FAULT..
NOT ENOUGHT SUNBEDS .....
This has been reported on trip adviser for over a year now, and the hotel has done next to NOTHING...
we did the right thing and filled out our reps complaint form, (which she requested ) as she said
Thomsons looked at them by VOLUME...!!!
I explained that it was a well known problem for over a year now. And yet the hotel has done NOTHING ...
she explained that the hotel had ordered 25 new sunbeds that week...BIG DEAL...!!!
the hotel has over 400 rooms.
MANAGEMENT.....DO YOU READ TRIP ADVISOR ....???

Room Tip: ask for a low floor near to the reception. You may get some WI-FI too...but I doubt it the Wi-Fi was...

We have just returned from our holiday at this hotel. My husband and our 11 year old daughter. We cannot fault the hotel very clean and very big apartment rooms, massive balcony We where on the 4th floor from our balcony we could see the sea.

We arrived at 12.15 our room was not ready until about 3.30 but we did not mind waiting it gave us a chance to look around the hotel. The evening entertainment was not much, but the town Alvor and the Harbour was only about a 10 minute walk, so if you fancied a walk before the evening meal or after it was nice. The evening meals are served up to 10pm. There are 2 snack breaks when burgers and hot dogs together with ice cream are served 10.30 till 1130 am and 4pm until 5.30 pm.

A lot of people did get up early and reserved sun loungers from about 9am. There are staff that do sometimes go round and move the towels if the beds are required. There are not a lot of sun parasols and the ones that are available are not very strong. There is a nice breeze around the pool, which do damage the parasols.

There is only 1 poolside bar if you don't mind standing in the q in the sun you are alright.
Overall we had a great holiday and the staff are very helpful.

Room Tip: Poolside view

I have got to say that this is the first holiday I have ever been on that I haven't had to get up at the crack of dawn to get a sun bed by the pool. Some people on here have complained about the pool vigilantes but I for one am happy they are there!

The hotel is modern and spotless. The rooms lovely and modern. Everything is clean; it is just missing a bit of character, the hotel could have been any where.

The food is like any other all inclusive holiday I have been on and I never had to queue. I went for my evening meal at 7.30 pm.

The drinks are served very strong. I'm not sure why there is a paying bar in the reception area but we never used it. Never had to queue too long to get a drink.

The animation team were great and there was plenty to do throughout the day if you wanted to join in but they didn't pressure you if you just wanted to relax.

The courtesy bus to the beach was handy and definitely worth a visit. The town is a short walk down the hill if you want to get out in the evening.

The pool is large and never too crowded. A bit chilly when you first get in but got used to it after a minute. It is windy in the afternoon but I found this pleasant in the heat.

All in all a good holiday but there was something missing.

Room Tip: Rooms without a pool view may have a side sea view and get the evening sun.

Like many who has reviewed this hotel previously I was slightly apprehensive on going to this hotel, but on arrival it takes your breath and it looks truly wonderful. The service on arrival was excellent our room was not ready but this did not bother us and we were given our room within an hour of arrival which did not disappoint and with a view of the pool and the sea. The entertainment team work hard to make your day enjoyable and the shuttle bus to the beach is a great addition. The walk to town was easy downhill mainly and as others have stated takes 10 mins, a trip back in a taxi is less than 4 euro.
The pool is impressive and never looked busy, the only couple of negatives I do have is there could be more umbrellas maybe 1 to every 2 sun beds and not 4, and the hotel would benefit from offering an a la carte restaurant like many other 4 star all inclusive resorts. But this would defiantly not stop from returning to this impressive hotel.

We took our 11 month old daughter for a week, in the beginning of August, not doubtably the busiest time of the year. We were a bit concerned of the reviews about the food being too cold, the pool being too cold and not enough sun beds . However, we found that the food was the best we have had in a European all inclusive and on par with buffet restaurants in say Mexico. It was a nice surprise to have a couple of nights with a outdoor BBQ aswell as the usual Buffet. There were lots of different dishes, which are all warm enough, after all who wants a red hot dinner when the temperatures are in the 30's. The pool was a bit cool due to the size however in the afternoon the sun warmed it enough for our daughter to enjoy a swim. In Most hotels in Europe you have to reserve sunbeds so nothing new there, by about 9am the sun beds have all been taken, so not major early for a family hotel, and hats off to the management who put more sunbeds and brollies out after a couple of days!

The hotel is very spacious and we felt spoilt with the room which in effect is two rooms lounge/kitchen and bedroom/bathroom with a full width balcony, all cleaned daily. My only concern on this is how we find a room to match without a expensive upgrade. One tip I do have if you don't want to hear the evening entertainment/disco is to not have a pool view, the noise didn't bother us as it finished at around 10:30.

When going away we have generally been across from or on the beach, so we're were apprehensive about the hotel being away from the beach and town. We love to get out of the hotel while away, and soon took a walk to Alvor which is 10 minutes down the hill, then 5 minutes through the town your down to the quaint fishing harbour where the bars and restaurants are of plenty and very reasonable. The very large beach is also well worth the visit on the free shuttle bus from the hotel, the sunbeds with a brolly are around 12 euro for the day.

Overall we would definitely return to the Alvor Baia when our daughter is over 4 as the kids club which looked a good attribute to the hotel only took children from this age. If you are a couple, as we were last year try a hotel geared to couples, this hotel is a top quality, very clean and spacious family hotel.
