“The Iceman Cometh”
Reviewed 11 September 2011

My wife and I stayed at this '4 star' establishment from 31/08/11 - 07/09/11.
Our initial impression, on arrival ,was that it was overrated and that 3 stars would be more appropriate. After a couple of days, we decided on a very good 2 star rating !
The staff were discourteous, sometimes bordering on downright rude. The buffet breakfast was minimal and never varied. Consequently we stopped using the hotel for breakfast and paid for one in Alvor town. The rooms contained a small fridge that barely chilled drinks. We would request ice from the bar on our daily return from the beach, much to the disgust of the barman, who reluctantly gave us a token, small plastic cup of cubes, constantly muttering under his breath. We would not contemplate staying at this hotel again and would request others to avoid it

Stayed at this hotel for 10 days. Most of the staff were friendly. Didn't have many dealings with the cleaners as we were up and out by 9.00am most mornings so can't comment on their friendliness, however, our room was always "made up" by the time we got back in the afternoons, so therefore a plus for the rooms. There was a menu outside the dining area for lunch and dinner so you had a fair idea what the food was supposed to be. However, the hot food was never hot or kept hot by the bain marie's on two occasions I actually only had some boiled rice and fries as nothing else appealed to me. There were three "suits" visiting on the second last day and lo and behold the food was hot and the waiters were falling over themselves to look busy and the food was good, (I actually went for seconds!!!), but one meal in 10 days is not what I would call "four star food". The grounds are lovely, the pool area very nice and the free bus into the town was appreciated as it is a bit outside of town. Overall it was the weather and some nice people we met that made this holiday but the food was a severe letdown.

If you have a pool-garden view room the view is lovely of the beautiful gardens and pool. In the evening you can see the swallows flying over and you can see the sheep and horses walking in the grounds to the back behind the fence which so lovely. There are also fish and terrapins in the ponds.

The rooms I found a little small for a family and could do with updating and would be nice with tea and coffee making facilities. The air-conditioning was also very good and cooled the rooms down nicely. The maids did come in everyday and cleaned and change towels. The balcony was nice and peaceful to sit out on in the evening. TV in room if want to watch TV I think it had ITV and ITV2 and Sky News...For the safe you got the key lock from reception this cost us €15 for ten days but you had to leave a €25 deposit.

We found the hotel staff very nice and we loved the bar staff Jose and Thome they were good fun, my daughter loved them and they made lovely cocktails. I did not use the gym but had a conversation with a couple that said nothing worked. The indoor pool was fine but the glass on the outside could do with changing.

In terms of food we had breakfast which was not great but ok for what we paid. Could have done with being warmer and they could do with another toaster as when busy having just one is a pain. The pool bar food was ok and came out fairly quickly. We did not have evening meal but did speak to somebody that had complained about it and had seen the manager who just told him to use the Microwave! The hotel is about 15-20 mins from the town and half hour approx from the beach the hotel does run a bus a few times a day to the town and the beach.

Places to eat in town our favourite was the Phoenix Restaurant lovely meals very reasonable, we also like the Albar was good food although little slow in bringing the food out. Bentleys was also nice. If you like fish there are lots of lovely fish places to try. Alvor has lots of bars our favourite was Pogues, just taken over by a lovely couple good entertainment, Mad Pat was fantastic.

The supermarket Pingos is a 5-10 minute walk you can't miss the turn for it there is a huge sign with an arrow pointing where to go. This was fairly reasonable and had most things you would need.

We fed the little ginger cat every evening we very cheap from Pingos. He turned up at the same time every evening.

Hotel not 4 star but has some good points. Alvor is a lovely place and has lots of nice restaurants and I would recommend it to anybody. We met lots of people that had been coming back year after year and we would return to Alvor.

We had a lovely holiday and can’t wait for our next one.

Room Tip: Garden Pool View is a must have.

We stayed for just under a week. The hotel service was very efficient and reliable. The rooms were very clean and neat and nothing was amiss with the service. The room was airconditioned and we had a great view of the garden and pool, on the ground floor.
The bathroom decor is a bit dated, but it was clean and served its purpose. We were very pleased that there was a shower and bath - often, we've only had one or the other when staying at various UK hotels. The bathroom was certainly big enough, and we didn't have to squeeze behind the door in order to open or close it.
There was a safe for which the lock was rented from reception.
The desk staff were very nice; they called taxis for us which always arrived within 5 minutes. It was also possible to utilise the transport to and from the tourist attractions, from the hotel, which was great.
The breakfast buffet was adequate, and there was enough variety. We only had one evening meal, which was delicious, and also a lot of variety.
The pools - both indoor and outdoor - were always cleaned and the garden and sunbeds were always kept neat and tidy. There are definitely sufficient sunbeds for all. Fortunately, there is no noise at this hotel and no big groups of loud, partying tourists.
The only disappointment during our stay was not the fault of this hotel - it was the fault of the transfer service from the airport, which took 3 hours to drive us to our accommodation, as the driver waited an hour before he departed from the airport! Thankfully, Luis Rosa from the hotel arranged a transfer to the hotel - it was fairly costly, but at least we arrived in time for our flight and the driver was very reliable.
We will definitely stay at this hotel again - it is a quick walk to and from the beach and market area, and we never felt unsafe or as if our belongings would go missing.

The hotel was 10/15 min walk to the centre of alvor - perfect for a evening stroll for dinner. We went for b&b, happy with the selection of food for brekkie - always fresh. room was very clean and air con was brilliant. The pool was fantastic - because there was a paddling pool for kids and an indoor pool this made the main pool perfect for adults. Would deffo recommend this hotel to others - made our trip to alvor perfect.

first we got a room on the ground floor, opened the curtains and we was looking at the car park, NOT VERY PRIVATE when a car is only 5ft from your window. tryed to change rooms but was not able till the next day. Bar staff are very slow on serving, snack meals not very good, burgers and toastes cold when you eventually got them, Dont go all inclusive as its NOT!!!!!! you could only get beer and soft drinks in the day time and was only allowed spirits after 8pm till 12, Bar is only small so dont exspect to find a seat at night

the hotel is very tired looking and is in need of refurbishment.loose light fittings, hair dryer sellotaped to the wall and carpets with vomit stains does not come under my 4 star ratings.the beds were very hard and uncomfortable they were small as was the room.the bus service to the village and beach,in my opinion, does not run often or long enough considering it was peak season.Alvor is beautiful and we will go again but definatly stay else where.
