After reading reviews on here I was quite nervous about my visit to AlvorFerias.
The airport transfer was as expected about 1hr 45mins as the buses do not use the toll road (A22) but snake around on the local roads instead.
On arrival, the reception was clean and tidy, the staff professional and checkin was speedy. You'll need E20 for the TV and AirCon remote as well as E30 for the key to the safe in your room. You'll get back E35 of this at the end of your stay - but make sure you keep your receipts!
We stayed in 2415 which is above the reception area and looks out onto the pool. The room is basically furnished with a sofa, two arm chairs, a dining room table and 4 chairs and a fold-up bed in the main room. Our apartment had twin beds in the bedroom as well as a large built-in wardrobe and a dressing table. The bathroom was clean and there were plenty of towels available. The kitchen was well equipped with a gas cooker (needed matches to light which were provided), and most of the equipment you'll need to make a meal, but we went half-board. There is a fridge with a small freezer compartment which was clean and functioned well. The air con was effective (you'll need a duplicate room key if you want to leave this on while you're out as the electricity is turned on by putting your room key in a slot by the door).
The only negative comment comes here - the bar is under the restaurant next to the pool, and as our room overlooked the pool there was a lot of music noise (especially on the karaoke nights!). It doesn't help that the pool bar continues to broadcast music from it's outdoor loudspeakers at night. Each night the music was stopped before midnight however.
There are two pools - one on each side of the complex. I witnessed the pool being cleaned every morning at 8am and being chlorinated every night at 8pm with samples also being taken at that time. The pool was big enough to accommodate all that wished to use it - you'll need E1 for the use of a sunbed cushion for the day - and you WILL need one! Ice creams were available pool-side as well as drinks and music was played at a soft volume during the day. The pool is very deep at the deep end (3m) but the shallow end is clearly marked and is between 60cm and 1.5m deep. There is also a separate children's pool which is fenced off from the main pool (a small circular pool).
The food at half-board was basic, but well prepared. The food is presented in hot-trays as a buffet-style for you to help yourself, the menu was never the same from one day to the next. I had roast chicken, swordfish steak, veal, bolognaise, turkish kebabs and pizza over the 10 days. There was always a children's selection of pizza, chicken nuggets/crispy pancakes etc as well as chips. The desserts were questionable at best! Frozen gateaux, strange mousse concoctions etc. The ice-creams offered at cost are a much better option here. Drinks were not included except orange juice at breakfast. Breakfast was a good meal with the traditional offerings with the exception of bacon and sausage.
The beach is about 10-15 minutes walk away. There are two good beaches ...
BEACH 1 - turn right out of the hotel entrance and head under the bridge down the hill. Walk to the GREEN SUPERMARKET on your right, then cross the road and take the passage by the side of the supermarket. Turn left and walk over the road to three steel railings. Continue down this road until there is a bright orange step in the road and a small paved area. There is then an area of rough ground on the other side of which you can see some small wooden buildings - head this way and you'll find the beach. I can thoroughly recommend the BLUE and WHITE striped sun bed area which is managed by EDGAR. He is the kindest, most attentive guy I have ever come across. Sun bed/Cushion/Shade and windbreak were E5 for the day. The nearby beach restaurants served good food and had chilled drinks and icecreams.
BEACH 2 - Follow the signs from the hotel entrance for PARTIMAU ARENA. This will take you straight across the junction. Continue on this road as it bends left and heads downhill until you get to a large roundabout. Turn RIGHT at the roundabout and continue on this road for about 5 minutes. You'll get to a carpark with access to the beach and restaurants.
We went to ZOOMARINE (excellent), SLIDE N SPLASH (splashingly fantastic) and had a cruise around the caves courtesy of the OPHELIA as well as a river cruise up to SILVES. All of these were great - with ZooMarine and Splide n Splash offering a free bus from the hotel bus stop.
Overall a great value family holiday with plenty to do. The weather helps of course!
