“Good Value, No-Frills and Comfortable”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

After reading reviews on here I was quite nervous about my visit to AlvorFerias.

The airport transfer was as expected about 1hr 45mins as the buses do not use the toll road (A22) but snake around on the local roads instead.

CHECK IN
On arrival, the reception was clean and tidy, the staff professional and checkin was speedy. You'll need E20 for the TV and AirCon remote as well as E30 for the key to the safe in your room. You'll get back E35 of this at the end of your stay - but make sure you keep your receipts!

ROOM
We stayed in 2415 which is above the reception area and looks out onto the pool. The room is basically furnished with a sofa, two arm chairs, a dining room table and 4 chairs and a fold-up bed in the main room. Our apartment had twin beds in the bedroom as well as a large built-in wardrobe and a dressing table. The bathroom was clean and there were plenty of towels available. The kitchen was well equipped with a gas cooker (needed matches to light which were provided), and most of the equipment you'll need to make a meal, but we went half-board. There is a fridge with a small freezer compartment which was clean and functioned well. The air con was effective (you'll need a duplicate room key if you want to leave this on while you're out as the electricity is turned on by putting your room key in a slot by the door).

The only negative comment comes here - the bar is under the restaurant next to the pool, and as our room overlooked the pool there was a lot of music noise (especially on the karaoke nights!). It doesn't help that the pool bar continues to broadcast music from it's outdoor loudspeakers at night. Each night the music was stopped before midnight however.

POOL
There are two pools - one on each side of the complex. I witnessed the pool being cleaned every morning at 8am and being chlorinated every night at 8pm with samples also being taken at that time. The pool was big enough to accommodate all that wished to use it - you'll need E1 for the use of a sunbed cushion for the day - and you WILL need one! Ice creams were available pool-side as well as drinks and music was played at a soft volume during the day. The pool is very deep at the deep end (3m) but the shallow end is clearly marked and is between 60cm and 1.5m deep. There is also a separate children's pool which is fenced off from the main pool (a small circular pool).

FOOD
The food at half-board was basic, but well prepared. The food is presented in hot-trays as a buffet-style for you to help yourself, the menu was never the same from one day to the next. I had roast chicken, swordfish steak, veal, bolognaise, turkish kebabs and pizza over the 10 days. There was always a children's selection of pizza, chicken nuggets/crispy pancakes etc as well as chips. The desserts were questionable at best! Frozen gateaux, strange mousse concoctions etc. The ice-creams offered at cost are a much better option here. Drinks were not included except orange juice at breakfast. Breakfast was a good meal with the traditional offerings with the exception of bacon and sausage.

BEACH
The beach is about 10-15 minutes walk away. There are two good beaches ...
BEACH 1 - turn right out of the hotel entrance and head under the bridge down the hill. Walk to the GREEN SUPERMARKET on your right, then cross the road and take the passage by the side of the supermarket. Turn left and walk over the road to three steel railings. Continue down this road until there is a bright orange step in the road and a small paved area. There is then an area of rough ground on the other side of which you can see some small wooden buildings - head this way and you'll find the beach. I can thoroughly recommend the BLUE and WHITE striped sun bed area which is managed by EDGAR. He is the kindest, most attentive guy I have ever come across. Sun bed/Cushion/Shade and windbreak were E5 for the day. The nearby beach restaurants served good food and had chilled drinks and icecreams.
BEACH 2 - Follow the signs from the hotel entrance for PARTIMAU ARENA. This will take you straight across the junction. Continue on this road as it bends left and heads downhill until you get to a large roundabout. Turn RIGHT at the roundabout and continue on this road for about 5 minutes. You'll get to a carpark with access to the beach and restaurants.

ACTIVITIES
We went to ZOOMARINE (excellent), SLIDE N SPLASH (splashingly fantastic) and had a cruise around the caves courtesy of the OPHELIA as well as a river cruise up to SILVES. All of these were great - with ZooMarine and Splide n Splash offering a free bus from the hotel bus stop.

Overall a great value family holiday with plenty to do. The weather helps of course!

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the bar area if you don't want music noise at night!

We stayed here our very first time in Alvor which was about 15 years ago. Stayed here again last year in September and have just come back after a week and going back in August for 2 weeks. Depends what you want from your accommodation, personally we're not into paying 5 star prices as we certainly don't plan on spending a lot of time indoors, we're on holiday !! I agree that some of the apartments are very old fashioned and could do with bringing up to date but to be honest as long as its clean, tidy and has the facilities to prepare a spot of lunch, a fridge for our drinks etc who needs plush. Never eaten here as we always go out on an evening - Alvor has too many good restaurants to miss out on. Handy supermarket for papers etc, the new Pingo Doce supermarket just outside of town is about a 15 minute walk from here and well worth a visit. Excellent choices of fruit, veg, fish, meat, fresh bread etc and lots of wine and so cheap - much cheaper than Ali Super prices.
Claude the children/adult sports/games entertainer is fab. This man loves his job so much and he is such a nice person - he recognised us straight away this year - very encouraging with both children and adults and likes to give everyone a fair shot at everything. He does a really marvellous job.
First time we will have visited in the school holidays when we go back in August and appreciate it will be VERY busy no doubt but as long as the sun shines we can cope with it - I think !!

a great family hotel where everyone mixes with everybody, the rooms are big and well equipped, we had a double room and another bedroom with two single beds and each room had its own bathroom. the thing that puts this hotel above any other hotel in alvor is claude who is in charge of all the sporting activities., what a sports coach and keeps the kids and adults entertained and improves everyones skills so much
the food lacks imagination and is repetitive but is ok
if you pick this hotel you will love it !!

Room Tip: choose the rooms at the top of the hill it is away from the main part of the complex

i would absolutely come back to clube alvorferias entertainers where very good but kids club could have been a bit more organised & entertainment in the evening was in a squashed bar but lovely pools kids would have great fun. Got really upset when i left only 10 minutes walk way from beach & have a shuttle bus to beach. 1 hour away from zoomarine bus picks u up at a bus stop 2 meters away (same with slide & splash) would defiantly come back!

First time at Clube Alvorferias and first time in Alvor itself, travelled in a large group of 12, ageing from 3 to late 50's.

Good points: Firstly we had a great holiday, Alvor is a fantastic little resort, possibly the nicest I have vistited in the whole of the Med and the apartments is a 15 minute walk away from its centre. As for the apartments, we were all situated on the reception side of the complex behind the pool and bar area. The apartments are basic but very spacious and clean, correctly graded as a 3 star, my only complaint would be the shower, which despite being powerful and warm yu had to hold the shower head due to a broken bracket. All staff we encountered were very pleasant and spoke good english. The pool was a nice size and was always clean, there was ample space around the pool with no need to reserve beds too early. The poolside bar is very and others a nice selection of toasties/burgers etc during the day. They play MTV during the day which you can hear round the pool area but this is a pleasent volume, they'll also put on the football etc for you if you ask. The Spar shop on site is decent, i have read people on here saying the larger Alisupermarket 5 minutes away towards Alvor is cheaper but I didn't think so at all.

Bad: As mentioned our apartment was to the rear of the pool bar area which also houses the evening bar underneath it which from the outside looks like some dingy night club. Unfortunately that is not where the comparsions with night clubs end. On our first day which started at 3am to get to the airport i was kept awake till the following 3am but base heavy dance music!! 3am is the standard closing time of the bar which for a complex that advertises itself as family friendly i find very strange. I have holidayed all over the Med including staying in some very lively resorts but i have never come across a bar that stays open with full volume music on, nearly very place i know will turn the music off at 12pm and continue to serve alcohol if people wish. Sadly the music is not the only issue with the bar as the front door is left wide open (this faces the accomodation block and is just yards from it), this also means that all the smokers coming out so until 3am you have a constant stream of intoxicated people standing yards from your balconies talking/shouting/singing every night. This was only upstaged on one night when a large family thouht that as they were celebrating a birthday it was acceptable to sit outside the bar drinking until 6am!!

The hotel in my opinion has to do something about the bar situation as it really does let the place down and without it i would have scored it much higher. Please not i'm not an OAP but someone who likes a drink but also some sleep and had 3 kids under 10 years to get up early with. Also note this noise with with all our windows and doors shut, something you wouldn't be able to do in July/August.

Other small gripes are no lifts in a 3 storey block? and the fact that the kids club was very unreliable, sometimes they turned up sometimes they didn't and they often changed the pkanned activites without any warning leading to disappointed kids.

For the price you can have a good value holiday, just ask to be away from the bar area. If you don't mind a slightly more dated apartment and no pool bar then maybe try the other side of the complex.

Room Tip: If you don't mind a slightly more dated apartment and no pool bar then maybe try the other side...
