Room Tip: room above ground level over the bridge facing the sea.

Just returned from 7 days in Clube Alvorferias + overall we were very disappointed. Apartments are very dated + basic thou clean. We were H/B basis and the food was terrible. There was no buffet breakfast or dinner. No bacon or sausages. Food was served cold or half cooked and because of this we were forced to eat out every day, if anything id recommend going self catering. We came for a relaxing holiday but found the complex very noisey on most nights. We will return again to Alvor but DEFINATELY NOT to these apartments.

I recently stayed at these apartments on a self catering basis with some friends on a 10 night holiday, we went through the check-in process easily enough and the reception staff were friendly.
The rooms themselves are very basic with fairly outdated furnishings, some of which did not seem to have any use, such as the buzz in phone next to the door, I havent a clue why this was there as these are self contained apartments with no exterior door to the street. It seems they have not been updated for many years BUT all in all what is there is basic but ok if you dont plan on spending much time in your apartment. The kitchen was clean with average equipment, the bathroom also clean and replenished with towels/toilet rolls 2-3 times a week. The beds however are very hard and quite uncomfortable, but there is a cupboard by the bathroom with plenty of extra pillows and blankets which can be used.
The complex is on boths sides of a busy main road connected by a bridge, and has a pool on either side so you do have a choice if one is busy which is often the case, but both have a bar selling reasonably priced drinks/snacks, and there is also a Spar supermarket too.
The reason why I personally would not visit the complex again is because of the noise and rowdy behaviour that happens most if not every nights, the complex has an entertainment centre which unfortunatly for me was quite close by my apartment, and has very loud music beginning around 10pm every night and goes on until around 2am.
Every night I was there it was extremely loud and after it does finish, you often hear people stomping around and shouting to eachother for another hour, its not a place to go to if you are looking for peace or relaxation.
The apartments are also very popular it seems with the Irish tourist....

Room Tip: If possible, avoid all rooms on the reception side of the complex - ask for a room on the other side...

We (family of 4: 2 adults & 2 kids aged 8 & 12) stayed at Clube Alvorferias 23rd July - 3rd August. Our first time in Portugal & we thoroughly enjoyed it. On arrival we were told our apartment was 2618 on the reception side. Apartment was very spacious - twin bedroom, bathroom, dining/living area where kids had a sofa & put-up bed, kitchen with fridge & full-cooker, plenty crockery etc. - only fault I could say was we just had 2 very small balconies - the one at the front did fit 4 chairs (just), but only a small side table - we do like to sit out for breakfast & lunch (if we're in) & on a night before we go out for meals - but it wasn't a problem. We didn't hire the air-con or the tv remote - so can't comment.
There were 2 sides to the alvorferias divided by a main road & bridge. Looking at the apartments the ones on the opposite side to reception looked newer & nicer - but sometimes you just have to put up with what you are given - & we managed fine.
Cleaners visited our apartment most days with clean towels etc. there's not alot of cleaning can be done when you have cases etc. lying around the floors.
We like to go to the beach which is a 15/20 min walk (we are good walkers): the beach was amazing, & if you walk to the end where the rocks are you will find lots of coves/bays - we went there most days, but called back into the pool over the bridge on our return, it was quieter & nicer - there was a towel problem with sunbeds (but thats everywhere now) & there was a lovely grassy bank all around the pool area where you could sit/lie (in fact I think you dried off quicker on the grass!) There is a small snack bar at this side - but could be quite pricey - we just tended to bring our own drinks & snacks down which we bought in the alvorferias supermarket. There is an Alisuper & about a 5min walk up hill from centre a massive Pingo Doce - a great big supermarket - a trolley back would have been ideal to carry the shopping back - a bit of a hike in the heat with kids - but we managed!
Alvor is a beautiful town, with cobbled streets & a pedestrianised square area in the middle, it still has alot of the old fashioned character of a fishing village. Around lunch-time you see fishermen sitting on the estuary side of town cleaning the freshly caught fish & if you look carefully you see a guy diving down for clams - a delicacy in some of the restaurants.
When we were all ready for our nightly walk down into Alvor (a nice 5 min walk) our first port of call (over the road down on the left-hand side) was Snack Bar Suica (90c for an ice-cold beer!), Chill out bar just around the corner was 1E a beer, Wetherspoons (yes the name's there! but not the chain!) 1.50E a beer - so there is still cheap beer out there! Some lovely restaurants (92 in all I believe) where the waiters/waitresses are all very polite and great with kids: Restaurante O Alcaide - had lovely swordfish steaks & free port, Restaurante Os Marafados was very good, Red Angus (just newly opened) not much of a view - but lovely Rib-eye steaks & free bottles of wine, Capacho (off the beaten track - but do try to find (around by Georgets) lovely portugese food & lovely breads & olives to start! Bar Havana in the centre was nice to call in for drinks. Quite a few Irish bars with music on - Dicey Rileys - very small but great atmosphere! I nearly forgot to mention - try Big Red's steakhouse turn left out of Alvorferias about a 10min walk - fantastic ribs - massive - even smaller ones for the kids.
There are numerous places to pick up a Freemap of Alvor - we found this very useful - as you can easily mistake one street for another - especially at night when everything seems to open up & the town is bustling!
We ventured to Lagos on the local bus - although it wasn't on time, we caught it in the centre & cost approx. 4Euro/ each way / per person - lovely afternoon out & nice town - although we preferred Alvor. All in all we had a fantastic holiday & we will hopefully return one day.

Room Tip: Probably the apartments over the bridge are newer/nicer

We were travelling with other family members and had booked 3 x 1 bed apartments six months in advance on a half board basis (for convenience). We requested quiet rooms located near to each other. I contacted Alvorferias in advance of our stay as one of our group is coeliac, a prompt reply was received advising 'we are not prepared for this type of diet and do NOT cater for any special meals'. After receiving this information I carried out some research and found a great website that does 'foreign food cards' www.celiactravel.com and printed out the 'catering request letter' which I had translated into Portugese using Google + printed out restaurant cards in Portugese. I also found out that Pingo Dolce do 'Sem Gluten' products and when we visited here, we showed them the letter and they showed us to the correct section.
Upon arrival we were allocated rooms in 3 different blocks a distance apart from each other (reception side), requests cannot be guaranteed and we were all happy with the apartments we were allocated. 2418 - 2620 - 2674 (pictures are of 2674). We found the bed not the most comfortable but probably because we are used to memory foam!
For our first evening meal we were greeted by a friendly staff member and he read the letter, talked with the chef and discussed the menu with the person who is coeliac. So so helpful and reassuring, Cristiano looked after us throughout our holiday and is a credit to Alvorferias, he made our holiday with regards to dining much easier. The food is superb, you have a half board menu to chose from with a selection of fish - grills - pasta and includes 'starter, salad, main course & desert'. The food was cooked fresh, sometimes a wait if busier but that is to be expected. Would recommend half board. The breakfast was self service cereals/toast/tea (coffee not so good) and you order your cooked breakfast. The girls on breakfast very helpful and friendly.
The pool area near to reception is busier and kids jumping of the bridge, parents/staff do need to stop this happening as it is an accident waiting to happen. Warning signs are in place though. The snack bar is good & toasties yummy. Happy hour on beer 7pm-8pm 1.50euro 40cl. Otherwise 3 euro, the red wine is nice & 2.50 for approx 250ml. BBQ night on a Tuesday is nice and the food good.
The bar and pool over the footbridge are quieter and more relaxed, we ventured over this side more (drinks slightly cheaper?). Sunbed mats 1 euro each & worth it for comfort. Pool lovely temperature. Weather most days was 25 - 30c.
The town is a 10 minute walk away with a selection of bars/restaurants & shops.
The beach is about 15 minute walk, go to the left hand side of the beach and explore the caves and rock pools, lovely chilled out beach with some nice beach cafes.
The bar on site is reasonably priced and happy hour for beer is 8pm - 10pm. Ricardo is fantastic. Entertainment is varied between live music/karaoke/disco. We sat outside most nights and listened from a distance.
If you want air con, you pay a 30 euro deposit for the remote & safety deposit box is 10 euro for a week with a refundable deposit of 15 euro.
All in all a great week away with family, we hired a mpv and travelled to several sites, places worth a visit are: Sand Sculptures - Silves castle - Lagos - Monchique + Foia (highest point) + Praia da luz to name a few.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms above reception & facing the bar due to noise
