“Basic but very clean & safe”
Reviewed 1 July 2014 via mobile

This was our first trip to Alvor the first of many I hope the apartments are very spacious but clean and safe. We had a one bed which was perfect for me my wife and two daughters 7 and 6 months. The decor is very basic but the room was cleaned every 2 days and the staff were very friendly. There are plenty of activities for older children and adult run each day but you need to keep an eye on the notice board as they don't go around asking people to join in. We were disappointed with the kids club as there was not a lot organised and the programme was rarely followed so our daughters didn't want to go but it was early in the season so maybe when it gets busier it improves. The two pools get busy so you need to get out early with your towel to reserve a sun bed but I think this is the same everywhere now. I have seen a lot of review giving out about the price of drink but a pint of local beer is €3 or cocktails €4 or €5 but most nights there are promotions and happy hour every night when a pint is €1.50 so I was very happy with it but if you want exported beers or magners obviously it's more expensive. We only ate there once and that was enough the food is not great but it's good for a sandwich & chips for the kids there is a spar on site that sells everything you need if you prefer to make lunch at home which we did. Overall we had a lovely stay here and will go back it is perfectly situated the town is a 10-15 min walk away as is the beach which is beautiful some people preferred to get a taxi which is 3-5 euro but we walked and enjoyed it after a meal. If you are booking trips book them in the town rather than the hotel as it's cheaper we did zoo marine which a great day out and I highly recommend it.

just returned from a week at Club Alvorferias and had a fantastic week with my other half and 3 kids [ages 3, 7 and 9].Stayed other side of bridge in apartmement 1002 on self catering basis. decor a bit dated, rock hard bed but all superficial in reality. cooking equipment worked. great beaches [by the rocks, main stadium end beach and a trip tp priaia de rocha [a bit overcrowed but kids didnt care a bit] great donuts on beach! Ate out 3 or 4 times all very welcomcing, good choices and ok price wise bearing in mind all tourist places in eurozone tend to be a little over-inflated. Hotel staff all very good, apartment clean and tidy, excellent pool by our room. quiet at night - all recommended. If you have high expectations [decor etc] then this place is not for you but then you wouldnt expect for price paid via Jet2 at about 1750 including flights for 7 nights. Alvor itself retains a mix of old charm and very accomodating for tourists. last week in June worked great as just enough tourists to make the place alive and not too packed to appear overcrowded. great family holiday!!

Room Tip: as most others we stayed 1002 other side of bridge following email request week before departed UK

We visited as a family, with a nearly 2 year old, and many previous visits to other parts of the algarve behind us. These apartments are clean and tidy but yes dated and a bit tatty, I can't say it was bad because we had a great first holiday for our daughter, she loved it! However personally it wasn't quiet enough, and I was glad to be over the bridge in a decent spot, all of our requests were met, and the staff were professional and hard working. Some guests must just ask in the wrong way?! . Alvor is a great town with a great beach, but get yourself a car and go out and about it's a good location to drive from with the new a22 motorway link about 2 miles away. All in an ok break, which could be great if the owners could invest in the place and bring it to say premier inn standard in the uk.

We arrived at Clube Alvorferias on June 7th and were amazed to find hoards of Primary school children already there during term time; mostly Irish and a few British. I understand now that this is to avoid the higher prices and temperatures of July and August. What a pity that flight companies and accommodation providers cannot offer more family friendly rates in high season.
Although a bit dated as others have already said, the appartments are really clean and very spacious, we felt more and more at home as the days went on.
Alvor is as great as always. We have never been there so early in the season. The shrubberies and gardens have a much more colourful and fresh look. There are swallows everywhere; multiple nests under many of the eaves. Since each swallow eats it's own bodyweight in flying insects every day, Heaven knows what discomfort we'd have been subjected to without them! Thanks, little friends!
The highlight of our holiday was a trip to Fatima; leaving at dawn and going on a four hour coach drive. The countryside on the way was always interesting and the guide fantastic.
The Alvorferias is so close to the town that we never considered getting a taxi. Alisuper and Pingo Doce supermarkets are within walking distance and the town market is also worth a visit.
The book bank at the appartments has some great titles and is located in the laundry room.
All staff that we encountered were polite and efficient, though sometimes there was a queue at reception and an extra person would have helped, but that's the erratic nature of this business. When we requested a replacement gas cylinder out-of-hours, it was attended to in minutes.

We have just returned from a weeks break, on arrival we were not shown our appartment but were directed where it was, Our appartment was clean but a bit dated, the beds and pillows are rock hard and the main block that we stayed in was near the main staircase so we had literally no sleep for the week we were there, the doors were slamming, people were shouting and screaming all hours of the night up til about 6am then the lorries were being unloaded from around 7.30am.We had no view, a dreary balcony overlooking more balconies, all you had to look at were the people sitting opposite. The pool is tiny for the amount of appartments there is, we had no idea that there was this many..there were 500+...noise noise and more noise. There is no lift so be prepared to walk flights of stairs to your appartment. the facilities on sight are poor....one table tennis table, a small bar and restaurant. Alvor is a lovely town, the beach is lovely, the people are lovely and we have previously been here before but obviously not to these appartments. However the beach and alvor town is further away than we believed so we had to get quite a few taxis. We did inform our rep, and will not be returning....ever!

Room Tip: Stay out of the main blocks

Reading the reviews of the Alvorferias the day before we left for Portugal left me more than a little bit concerned about what we were letting ourselves in for.

Thankfully, we found absolutely no reason to be concerned. We arrived to a friendly reception desk and were given the key card to our room. Note that reception ask for a €30 deposit for the air conditioning and television remote. As we weren't planning on running off with them, it wasn't a problem.

Our room was massive and despite other reviews, it was spotless. Yes, the decor is a bit old fashioned in comparison to UK hotels but it is by no means in poor condition. The kitchen provided ample facilities, there was plenty of wardrobe space and the bathroom again was spotlessly clean.

The maid service was good and when we reported a problem with one of our window shutters it had been fixed within a couple of hours.

We chose to go bed and breakfast. The choice for breakfast was quite limited but was adequate to set us up for the day.

From our experience of the Alvorferias it certainly seems that some people are looking for 4 or 5 star accommodation whilst paying 2 or 3 star prices.

The amount we paid for flights and accommodation for a week in June was VERY reasonable. When you take into account the cost of flights and tour operator profits, the hotel is no doubt left with very little. Despite this, we had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel.

I would not hesitate to return to the Alvorferias and would be happy to recommend it to others.
