We booked the Clube Brisamar as a last minute break through 321travel.co.uk. The package for a one bedroon self catering apartment was very cheap for the half term period, so our expectations were not too high. We arrived at the Clube at about 1:30am and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the night time receptionist who could do enough to get us checked in and in our apartment quickly. First impressions of the apartment were that it was somewhat dated but generally was clean and generous in size. We slept very well in comfortable beds.

In the morning we were able to view the resort and property more clearly and overall agreed that apart from being somewhat tired and dated the place had a nice feel. Facilities on the resort were few and far between so we spent most of our time on the beach which is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive away.

During our stay our apartment was cleaned every day and we were given fresh towels and linen. The place began to feel more homely the longer we stayed and all in all we felt we had got a very reasonable holiday. Window locks were somewhat dodgy, so we were a little concerned about potential intruders when we were out, but during our stay we had no problems. The pool area again was dated but there were plenty of sunbeds and the bar was open serving ice cold Super Bock.

The location of the resort is convenient for the Pingo Doce supermarket which meant that each day we were able to have fresh food, drink etc to take to the beach.

We ate out every night in the Alvor Village, which was a 10 minute walk away and in most places spent about €50 a couple including wine/beer. You could have eaten a lot more cheaply if you wanted to.

Bars and restaurants we visited were Ze Morgadinho (Unbelievable fish!!!), O Candeeiro (on beach), Restaurante Duarte (Excellent Portuguese), Restaurante Rio a Vista (Great meat on a stone), Don Toro Angus Steak House (Overpriced compared to other places), Al Capone (Too much garlic), Black Stove Pub (The place to watch sport), Pic-Nic Bar (Lovely for a quickie on the way back from the beach).

I would recommend having a hire car for the holiday, particularly if you have children, as the walk to the beach would be too far.

Overall the holiday fully met our expectations. Luna Clube Brisamar offers great value for money and the staff are excellent.

Room Tip: We were in Block H7 with a view of the tennis courts. Suggest an upstairs room.

As a lot of people have said, if you get a cheap deal- go! Our apartment was clean but basic and quite old. The bathroom was definitely dated with cracked tiles and quite old fittings, which does give it the impression of being a bit grubby but again, it was clean. The same really for the kitchen, we had a fridge, full hob, washing machine and a microwave oven. Everyone says this but the pillows really are lumpy! I think they must put them in the washing machine!

The resort itself is basic but a nice place to be, well maintained grounds. There's a little shop and the pool area is nice, but nothing special.

10 minute walk into Alvor which is a nice town, quite small but lots of restaurants and the usual souvenir shops. We spent a few afternoons sat at a cafe in the square, (opposite a leather or cork shop, I forget!) lots of seating with shade and great ice cream sundaes! The most direct walking route to the beach is up and down a fairly short but steep hill although Brisamar runs a free shuttle to and from.

I'd recommend excursions to Splash & Slide and Zoomarine but if you book an excursion (we booked them through Thompson) the coach stops outside Brisamar at the bus stop on the main road. It sounds obvious but there's a bus stop inside the complex (beach bus) and because our excursion tickets said "Clube Brisamar bus stop" we stood at the wrong one and nearly missed it!!

In all, if you want a cheap holiday it's certainly a great base to explore the Algarve

Just returned from very cheap 2 weeks self-catering package holiday at Brisamar. Apartment had "knocked about" feel. 3-star rating; probably nearer 2. Cracked bathroom tiles and bidet, bath paint peeling off. Staff, very helpful and obliging, put right most things not working - TV (Portuguese only), air con, lights, microwave BUT shower, bathroom and fridge doors couldn't be fixed. (No problem - we are very adaptable). Good cooker hob (but no cooking utensils), new washing machine (we didn't use). Disappointingly few linen/towel changes in 2 weeks. Good-sized, clean communal pool. Nice mix of nationalities. BEWARE! 30-45mins walk downhill (uphill back) to town and beach, which we enjoyed. (Occasional courtesy bus). Electric bike hire. Excellent supermarket 10mins walk - no on-site grocery store. Remember the price; don't expect too much and you'll enjoy. We did, and would return.

Another wonderful holiday at clube brisamar. Clean spacious apartments - very helpful staff, especially lovely Joanna in reception. In a quiet, peaceful part of alvor but short walk to old town. Our only complaint - why do you close in mid October? We have at least two holidays in alvor in the winter months and would definitely stay at Brisamar if it were open. We'll be back in May!

This was our fourth time staying at these apartments, and yet again we had a lovely relaxing stay. Admittedly, they won't suit everyone - e.g. people who prefer a more central location, or a bit more luxury, or maybe more of a party atmosphere - however, they suit our needs down to the ground. We hate high-rises, so the low-rise nature of the complex is perfect for us. The apartments are well spread out around picturesque gardens. We also like a bit of peace and quiet so the location, a 15min walk from town in a quiet residential area, also suits us fine.

Pros: low price, washing machines in all apartments, air con at no extra charge (which we used a few times during the october heatwave!), spacious apartments with large balconies, decent pool, friendly helpful staff.

Cons: distance to beach - the 35 min walk would be hellish in the daytime heat (we had a rental car), lumpy pillows (yes they are god-awful).

We always request an apartment at the back of the complex, where it's quieter - e.g. block H9. However this can add up to 5mins onto the walk into town so depending on your preference you may want to request an apartment closer to reception. We also prefer upper level apartments that get lots of sun - some of the apartments are north facing and get no sun so if this is a concern to you make sure and request one of the non-north facing apts.

Most importantly, I would suggest that if you find yourself in an apartment you don't like, that you request to be moved (we did this once when they put us across from the nightclub/restaurant in one of the pokier apartments - they were very obliging and moved us straight away).

In summary, these apartments are excellent value - if you're looking for luxury you may need to look elsewhere. But if you want a no-frills base for your stay in Alvor, these are perfect.

Room Tip: Apartments at the back of the complex are quieter but can add up to 5mins onto the walk into town. R...
