difficult to find and standing alone with no other facilities around.
good room with terrific view of the duoro but too quiet with very few other guests.
food was good if not spectacular and not the cheapest place to stay

This hotel is a relaxing place to have lunch or stay the night. The best natural orange juice...zumo I've ever had in a Spanish hotel. The views are spectacular from the terrace by the River Douro. The hotel is quiet and beautifully designed. People stay there who enjoy sailing ,fishing or other water sports. Well worth a visit. A fancy menu is on offer with good fish dishes.

Room Tip: I think each bedroom has a small terrace but if you want one just make sure before you book.

Finding the hotel can be a bit tricky - our satnav led us down a minor road that turned into a farmer's track about 5 miles away from the hotel. Luckily, my rudimentary Portuguese, lots of pointing and a map helped us to get directions from a local family returning from their lunch. If you are approaching from the south side of the Douro, use the N222 until you get into Cinfaes. Porto Antigo is signposted at a junction not too far from the town centre. As you descend into the valley, you lose satnav connectivity anyway. Moral of the story - use a map (there's a Michelin 1:300 000 map of Northern Portugal worth using if you are travelling round). Also, be warned that if you are a nervous driver the roads are narrow, twisting and with precipitous drops. It's like driving in a car advert sometimes.

The hotel has a fantastic setting at the junction of the Douro and another river. All rooms have river views and ours had a balcony which was great in the evening to watch the sun go down. The Douro valley at this point isn't the classic terraced vineyards of the parts further east. I actually preferred this as the Douro itself is a heavily modified by dams and the setting of the Porto Antigo is more natural. To get up to Regua, Pinhao etc means a thrilling drive or - even better - the train. There's a station just over the bridge near the hotel (about one mile away, so walkable). The reception staff had timetables. It's quicker and less stressful by train although getting a seat can be tricky as the train in the mornings are packed with tourists coming up from Porto.

I stayed there in mid August with my wife and 7 year old daughter.
The bed was big and comfortable and my daughter had a camp bed that she liked.

The buffet breakfasts are very generous with a good selection of cereals, yoghurts, cakes, meat, cheese and scrambled egg and bacon. After a few days I noticed that you could ask the staff to make you a decent cup of coffee instead of using the standard pots. Take your own Marmite.

The hotel has an outdoor unheated pool which was clean and a decent size for swimming. There are also free pedalos and a canoe which we used. It was a nice little trip up the nearby river - as long as you stayed away from the irritating jetskiers. My wife had a massage that she enjoyed and there are also 2 gyms with a variety of exercise machines and proper weights to help you work off the pastais de nata.

I'll review the meals separately, but they were ok.

There are restaurants in Cinfaes and Resende that are cheaper and sometimes better.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are good value

I went here with my boyfriend in the low season on a monday and tuesday, we had a groupon coupon that entitles us to a two night stay with some extras.

The hotel is located exactly at a bifurcation of the douro. So the view from the rooms and the hotel is amazing!! The room was very clean and comfortable so together with that spectacular view it was perfect.
Even though there were not many people staying at the hotel the breakfast offered a good variety of things, such as a delicious cheese, marmelades, fresh fruit and different types of pastries and bread.

Its very recommended to have a car (otherwise I wouldnt even know how you could reach the hotel, maybe by train...). In summer i imagine its very nice to enjoy the swimmingpool, but for us this was not an option. So we took the car and just drove around and explored. We saw an amazing waterfall among which you can climb (and in summer probably swim), some villages where time seemed to have stopped, and just very nice views and nature.
We also visited a wine farm called Quinta das Massorra, where we got a very nice tour and bought some delicious wine.

In high season I imagine you could go to the center of Cinfaes to have dinner, it is close and we saw some nice looking restaurants there, but they appeared to be closed when we arrived, probably because of the low season.

We had dinner in the hotel twice, where we were served very well by the staff. The way they treated us was very 'chique' and polite, and together with the very good food you might expect high prizes but they were very reasonable (almost cheap even for what you get!). And normally it can be a problem to be vegetarian in Portugal but it was not an issue at the restaurant they served me a delicious veggie lasagna! And my boyfriend loved the meat he had.

So if you really want to 'get away', relax, enjoy and be romantic, this hotel is perfect!!!

This is an hotel situated near rio Douro , very cosy with an excellent view and a small marina.
it is really far away and quite difficult to reach, also you have to eat on the hotel restaurant because there's nothing around. The food at the restaurant is ok, service is very good and staff atentious and friendly.
It was a goos experience.

Room Tip: Room with river view

We arrived tired after a long drive, and having come from a busy hotel, felt a little disgruntled by the lack of hovering staff, offering to fetch refreshments. Also, we realised that there was no choice of eatery other than the hotel restaurant - which was practically empty (it being end of season for that part of Portugal). But after an exceptionally tasty dish of rabbit - and Brussel sprouts! (not a vegetable I am normally fond of), followed by a delicious dessert and accompanied by a nice wine, I was mellowing up considerably. Throw in the view over the Douro from our room balcony - plus the room itself - and the comfortable lounging areas (with free wifi), and I was very sorry to leave. (Also to their credit, though there were few guests, the breakfast buffet was still large and varied).

Room Tip: A small number on the upper floor have balconies, should you wish your own private space for looking...

We didn't stay at this hotel, but we were recommended to have a meal there by friends who live nearby and described it as one of the most beautiful settings in the Douro Valley.

We would definitely agree with this; sitting on the shaded terrace right on the river with stunning scenery and a chilled glass of port is hard to beat. The menu was interesting and we enjoyed our main courses. The staff were charming and attentive and we certainly would be happy to go there again and stay there.

However...there was one unfortunate sour note; beware the platter of hot food which is delivered shortly after you are seated. This is not free; we were charged 11 Euros for it. This was mildly irritating any way, but particularly so as I cannot eat fish so my husband ended up with a fairly substantial starter, none of which he chose and I ended up paying for something I couldn't eat. This is not great hospitality...BUT, don't let this put you off - it is still a beautiful place to go!

Room Tip: We had lunch only - so can't comment on the rest of the hotel
