We have tried El Lateral in a sunny afternoon at 2:30 pm (the Spanish way). Food was simple but good and very cheap. Location is also quite nice in a small square at the heart of the village. Very nice overall.

This place is very Spanish. Both my husband and myself agreeded this was the best meal of the holiday. My main meal was pigs cheek and was beautifully cooked and succulent. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Finished off with the most amazing sweet sherry I have ever had. I just wanted to savour it. The service was professional and courteous. We went back the following day for tapas at lunch time and it was amazing too. Not cheap, but if you are in the area its a must try.

Just back from Gaucín and this was the only restaurant we ate in twice. Lola who runs the front of house is welcoming (and fairly straight-talking). We had the tasting menu and a fantastic bottle of wine on our first visit - with my only complaint being the paella. It was very good; neither dry nor short of ingredients. It was however, way too much to eat after the first four starters. On our second visit, we chose a starter and a main course, and another superb bottle of wine. The starters are sometimes larger versions of those in the tasting menu. On both occasions the food was great. If I had one criticism it is that the food is sometimes trying to be too 'foodie' and could do with a lighter or simpler touch. Both nights were finished off with a warm thank you from Carlos and Lola, and shot of something warming on the house. 2 cava, 1 bottle of very good wine, tasting menu for 2, desserts and coffees - approx €100.

(By restaurant, I mean this, La Fructuosa and La Granada Divino as opposed to those that are also tapas bars)

We loved this restaurant so much we went there twice for dinner in a matter of days. Lola is in control front of house and looks after you so well, making sure you have everything you need and pacing the timing of each course so you don't feel rushed, but you are not waiting around either. She also asks you what you thought of each course and lets Carlos know it the kitchen - nice to know there and then that your cooking is appreciated. The food is fine dining, with each course a feast for the eyes as well as a delight to the taste. I order venison on both occasions as it was so delicious, melt in the mouth, with a rich chocolatey sauce. Carlos came to ask if we were enjoying our meal, which was a nice touch. This restaurant is 'them' and what they offered us as visitors was a real treat, which I will remember for some time to come.

Other reviewers have mentioned the price difference from other gaucin eateries. There's a very good reason for this, it isnt tapas in the evening and the quality level is that of fine dining. Everything we had in the tasting menu was lovely, delicious and well presented. Paella was not dry as others commented, it was simply fantastic. Thank you Carlos and Lola, you are both natural entertainers!
