“lunch at Cerro de Hijar”

I will not write about the hotel even though we stayed there last year and came back to have Sunday lunch after goodly climb up from the hotel. It was a glorious day, very few walkers, silence, stunning views from the top.
Lunch was great too, cuisine worthy of an expensive restaurant. Food was cooked to perfection, I even had a dessert to test the skill of the chef.Passed!
We spent a while in their attractive lounge to read my emails. Even the internet was fast!
This is a perfect place to relax, recharge batteries and be spoilt by a very friendly staff.

Room Tip: I cannot comment on rooms this time, TA does not list this restaurant, yet it is worth coming here f...

Spectacular position, 3.5km up a winding steepish road from Tolox. We stayed for 4 nights. The hotel has a really relaxed feel to it. The rooms are stone floored and the corridors quite echoey, and you can hear exactly what is happening next door. On one side we had what sounded like a washing machine which worked through most nights and on the other side noisy neighbours, both of which detracted from the fresh air and the tranquility of the outside.

We ate breakfast and had a couple of dinners in the hotel. The food was very good, service was fine, and certainly avoids the trek into town.

There was an outside pool which looked great, but was too cold (October). The view from the chairs around the pool were great, looking down over Tolox and on towards both the mountains and the sea.

On this great location, on top of the mountain, looking down at the small city Tolox the silence is overwhelming. The hotel is a beautifull building and well maintained, as well as the beautiful garden and swimming pool. Then the hospitality, the service and the food is great as well. Everything i asked for was no problem at all. You could say, they run for you!!!

Thank you all, El cerro de Hijar

Don't expect armies of staff, vogue styling, perfect decor and a rammed bar: if this is important to you go elsewhere.

If you want a charming country hotel in an amazing out of the way location, inexpensive rates with great food and personal service this is for you.

We enjoyed our stay at the Cerro de Hijar. It's great value, we recommend it. We booked a room for one night well in advance. We got a nice, spacy room with great a great view. Staff was professional and heartful. Diner was excellent.
When going there, don't be fooled by your GPS into the village of Tolox. Just follow the sign to the balineario, from there on the hotel is sign-posted. Tolox is well worth a visit, park your car along the main road.

Having booked a 2 night stay here, we were really looking forward to staying in this little hideaway up in the mountains. I should start by saying that the (very remote) location is stunning and its hard to think of better views. So, the positives were - great view, lovely old building. Sadly the negatives far outweigh these.

From the moment we arrived, we did not have a good experience. No-one was on the front desk at all, in fact the whole place seemed empty. Eventually a lady arrived to show us to our room. We had booked the suite (room 1) which is in the "turret" of the building and spread across 3 floors. Sounds fantastic but was very sparseley furnished and tatty. The bed had plug sockets wedged in where the pillows were, a broken telescope on the top floor, and plaster hanging off the walls. The place is in dire need of decorating and a good clean. That said, again, the view in the morning from the top floor was incredible.

Onto the pool area, its quite hard to make what should be such a great spot be so bad. Mismatched, tatty, dirty sunbeds, faded, stained and torn "towels", rubbish strewn about, steps to the pool taped off, just generally very run down. Add to the fact that we couldnt get a drink from the bar as there was NO staff around at all (not even any other guests, we saw 2 people for 3 mins all the time we were there) and it wasnt a great day. By that point we had decided to only stay for one night but would stick around for dinner as we'd read great reviews of the food. To be fair, the food was ok but we were the only people eating in a big, drab dining room. Our waiter looked embarassed but did his best (he also checked us out in the morning as there was no other staff) but the food was ok, without being great.

We left after a decent breakfast the next morning. This hotel is a crying shame. it deserves to be fantastic as a relaxing hideaway but the lack of staff, uncleanliness, tattyness and lack of atmosphere stops it from being fantastic. I also understand that the fact it was quiet isnt their fault BUT surely you should at least have SOME staff to take care of the guests that are there?!

If it was revamped and employed some people to make its guests feel welcome, we would consider it again but it really has a long way to go in my opinion.
