“If you pay for Cava, don't expect Champagne”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

I have rated the Riomar as very good as compared with similar hotels and not with 5* establishments. I read a lot of negative comments on here and heard quite a few whilst at the hotel re the lack of air con and the quality of the meals. Most of these came from returning guests so I guess despite the need to raise it at every opportunity,it couldn't have marred their holiday experience too much.
LOCATION: ideal. At the quieter end of the resort but within easy walking distance of the centre, marina, bus station, river-walk. Plenty of good bars and restaurants in close proximity
HOTEL: Pleasantly surprised. Huge terrace with lots of seating to watch sunrise, sunset and everything in between. Lovely cool and peaceful indoor lounge which is lightly used. Rooms - we did not have a sea-view room but were offered one with 48 hours of arrival. By then we had decided that we enjoyed the evening sun on our spacious balcony and would stay put. The fan was adequate to cool the room. My only issue was the small bathroom which was red hot after the 2 of us had showered and it was impossible to return their to do hair, make up etc.
RESTAURANT AND MEALS: No issue with cold food or choice. I often wonder what people feast on at home....Lots of salad and fruit options. Meat, fish, veggie choice at every meal-time. If I am being picky, I was underwhelmed by the desserts but not a big issue. The restaurant would benefit from a bit of reorganisation to make it feel a bit less congested. This hotel has a lot of elderly guests and lines can be slow moving at times. Food replenished timely.
SWIMMING POOL AND SUN TERRACE: The pool was not used a great deal whilst we were there (older guests). It is deep and only the kiddies pool suitable for cooling off if you are not a good swimmer. Now for my only bugbear....people who put towels on loungers at the crack of dawn and then do not use them til late afternoon if at all. This is not acceptable to me at any time but when there are only a few loungers available (about 30) it is infuriating. The hotel management need to address this so that all guests have an equal chance of getting a lounger at 9am when the terrace officially opens.
ENTERTAINMENT: Wed and Sat - drag act and impersonator singer - seemed to go down well with guests 50+.
STAFF: Polite, professional, smart.A couple of reception staff did not speak or understand English and this has the potential to be a little frustrating.
OVERALL - value for money hotel in a lovely resort but do not stay here if you rely on air con, are a fussy eater and are not prepared to rise early to grab a lounger.

This hotel was very well located, close to the beach (great beach) and shops. Hotel was quite good for a 2 star hotel. It was very clean and the staff were very polite and helpful. It was cleaned regularly and the maids cleaning the rooms were quite helpful and cleaned thoroughly. The food was great with a great variety. Breakfast consist of continental and traditional full English Breakfast (great fry ups). Dinner consisted of a massive variety to choose from - Lots of great choices of both vegetarian and meat dishes. Soups and great selection of puddings. However, on the down side, you will have to pay for any drinks (even water which cost £1.30 for a very small bottle). Secondly, don't bother about the mini breakfast they usually make on Wednesday mornings at 7:00am for early leavers - the biscuits are stale and selection is terribly). No air conditioners in the room and it gets very hot. No telly or wifi in rooms. Wifi limited to bar!!!!

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the beach as it usually gets very hot in the summer.

Just returned from 2 weeks at the rigmarole, hotel it's self was very clean and staff friendly and helpful, a special mention for the bar waitress CRIS always had a smile on her face , although it is like going back to the 70s needs updating especially the bedrooms. We had a room with a sea view which was great as the sun rose on the sea side which made the room nice and cool late afternoon so we did not need the use of the fan. The food disappointing little choice for evening meal and all only just warm, ate out most of the time, plenty of places to eat from fish & chips to piella. Entertainment in hotel not up to much but loads of bars in area with tribute acts IE Elvis,Buddy Holly. Go to Mariners bar for live bands every night. In conclusion would I stay here again YES, but would rather go B&B if that was avaliable.

Riomar could not be better situated. I think it has the absolute perfect spot in Santa Eulalia. Right on the beach, right near the 'action', but far enough away to be quiet. Food is really good - always loads to choose from (obviously not cordon bleughhhhh, but perfectly acceptable!). Staff are lovely - helpful and friendly. Rooms are basic and clean. Beds super comfy I thought. Bathroom small and adequate. No air-con. We spent the first week on the back of the hotel - got a shock the first evening we went to shower & change for dinner - sweltering! Sun sets on this side so it's full on your windows all afternoon! Shower then 30 secs later dripping in sweat! We soon acclimatised to this though, so don't despair if you end up at the back! Second week we had a sea-view room. The difference is amazing. If you stick a shoe in the room door & open the balcony door you get a fabulous breeze! And as a bonus the view is stunning! The pool is basic but fab - a huge tree keeps it in shade all morning, so being a water-sprite, my 10 year old didn't even need suncream until the afternoon! People say you get what you pay for - but Riomar, whilst inexpensive, is so much, much more than I expected! I don't understand when people gripe about petty stuff when they paid so little! The only thing I would want is air-con - but then the price would shoot up so maybe not...

Room Tip: Get a sea view room - no air-con and these rooms are MUCH cooler! View is nicer too!

We booked this hotel last minute at £329 per person via Thomas Cook, If you go there thinking you are going to get luxury then this is not the hotel for you. We had half board and we di have breakfast everyday, but we went out for evening meals except for 3 nights, good choice to choose from, its not really explained very well about the dining room you arrive and on the first visit to the dining room you are gicven a table and that table is yours for the duration of your holiday. All in all this was a very good holiday and to be honest you get what you pay for its not 4* or 5* but it does the job lovely base to stay and walk down the prom.

After the first day this hotel would have only received 1/5 but they redeemed themselves somewhat.

Room - awful, no air-con and only provided with 1 fan which didn’t help as there was 3 of us in the room so was pointed at our daughter. We did request a 2nd fan which was only granted after much persuasion! Rooms are clean but beds are uncomfortable and very dated.

Food - very basic and not the best in all honesty. You could always find something to eat but at no point did I think 'oohhh that’s nice'.

Pool - ok size but shallow end was very small which was difficult for learner swimmers or young children. Sun beds were limited but there were plenty of tables/chairs around pool.

Staff - very good. The young lady working around the pool all day taking drinks orders literally didn’t stop and always had a smile on her face.

Position - excellently situated. Right on the beach near water sports, lots of bars and restaurants, coastal path to marina. Quiet and only €30's in a taxi from the airport.

Conclusion - the fact we only paid £580 for 3 of us for a week’s HB got this place 3 stars. I would not of paid anymore. I did hear of people paying 'considerably more' via Thomas Cook etc but we booked independantly. Would I stay here again? Definately not.... unless it was out of season and the extremley hot rooms were not a factor and it was very, very cheap.
