We went with a 7 month old baby and staff couldn't do enough for us as well as making a real fuss over him! Apartment (great to have somewhere to chill and look out to sea while the baby sleeps in the other room!) had a microwave and fridge for milk and baby food (ask for a kettle and high chair as they aren't provided) and there was a nice little baby pool too. Great gardens for walking around in the shade looking at birds and fish and cats. Right by the beach for a change of scene and very handy Spar nearby for extra provisions. Only thing I would say is don't expect luxury accommodation - it's clean and decent but some aspects perhaps need updating. And pay the extra for a sea view!

Stayed: June 2014

we stayed here with 2 adult children. The hotel is amazing! its location and amenities are excellent. It is kept very clean and tidy both in your apartment and the hotel grounds and facilities also. The rooms are well furnished and I have never on holiday slept in such a comfortable bed! equipment provided is of a good quality and plentiful but no kettles so you have to boil water in a pan but that is no hardship. The only small downside was that our son did not have any "long" trousers only shorts so we were unable to try the restaurant in the evenings. However we ate at Sadi which was very good and the 3 Chimneys which was the most amazing steak ever!Eat out early as a lot of the places stop serving food at 21.00. We hired a car for 2 days to see the island which was well worth doing and went on an organised trip to the observatory and Roque de Los Muchachos which we thoroughly enjoyed but perhaps not a trip for young children. This was our first trip to the canaries and will not be our last. Even though the Hotel is 5 mins from the airport we hardly had any noise as the planes take off and turn away. The only negative we had was the flight with Norwegian, where the flight and crew were fine it was the not being able to pre book seats and them being already allocated despite the Thomson Office telling us to get to Gatwick early so we could select our seats when we booked in we were told that the seats were " allocated already and that was it". This made a bad start to our holiday but the resort made up for it !

Room Tip: Block A has limited sea views and can be noisy early morning due to deliveries as it is on the roadw...

This hotel is located in the lovely coastal area of Los Cancajos in the Brena Baja region of La Palma. It is situated mid-way between the airport (to the south) and the centre of Santa Cruz de la Palma (to the north). It is therefore serviced by good transport links - mainly buses and taxis.

We have stayed at the HSJ on two occasions: once in March 2013 and again in March 2014. Both our visits were based on walking expeditions that we undertook on the lovely island of La Palma. On our first visit we found that the hotel was very good and conveniently located - so we decided to make a return visit. On neither occasion were we in any way disappointed.

On each visit to HSJ our accommodation was based on the use of a self-catering apartment - with the option of taking meals (breakfast and dinner) in the central hotel restaurant. The apartments that we stayed in were excellent - well equipped and comfortable. However, the views from the balcony of the apartments differed considerably - depending upon their individual location.

The food available in the restaurant was quite reasonable - a very wide range of dishes was available and the service from the dining-room staff was excellent. We would undoubtedly stay here again.

Room Tip: Higher floors will usually have better views from the balcony.

Spent a week at the Hacienda in February. We had a warm welcome on arrival. The room was spacious and comfortable. There was a living area with kitchenette and a bedroom with ample storage. We were in a block that had a superb view of the ocean and Santa Cruz, the capital. We had a wide shared balcony area so could move around to sit in the sun.
We were on a bed & breakfast package and the breakfast did not disappoint. The hot water for making tea was a little cool (but that is fairly typical of hotels). Food selection was broad and of a good quality. Something for everyone. We did visit the restaurant in the evening not to eat but just to see what was on offer. The meals were buffet based.
We went out to eat in the evening but there was little choice locally. Many places were closed. The best was El Pulpo on the beach which served fresh basic fish dishes. Locally they use a lot of salt which took some getting use to.
The hotel had extensive gardens which were great just to wander around. Each time you would fine something new. There are various areas with wildlife.
A free WiFi service was provided but you need to ask at reception as this is not publicised.
All in all a very good place to stay if you like it quiet and unassuming without the glitter of 5 star.

Room Tip: Some rooms are in shad so pick a room on a high floor

Just come back from an enjoyable week at HSJ. Made the mistake of upgrading to DBB. Unfortunately cannot really recommend the food - too often cold and not a lot of variety. However on the positive side accommodation was good - plenty of room in the apartment, every thing worked and we could well have self catered or eaten out - plenty of local restaurants. Gardens were beautiful and really made the place, Plenty of excursions available and the capital Santa Cruz about an hour's walk or 10 mins on the bus (E1.30).

Room Tip: Second floor balcony gives more privacy and better view

We stayed at the HSJ for a week in March/April, booking through Thomsons on a self catering basis. It is a privately owned hotel. We found the accommodation to be first rate although were much less impressed with the food on offer. We had a second floor, three room apartment with a small balcony, that overlooked the gardens and (just) offered a sea view. The room was extremely clean when we arrived and it was relatively well equipped with two hot plates, toaster and coffee maker (no kettle). The daily - except for Sundays - maid service started work early, and the tiled floors in the corridor meant a peaceful lie in was tricky especially when doors are slammed. The gardens are beautiful even though very little was in flower when we were there. The guided tour of the gardens and orchid house by Jutta is worth attending as they are bigger than they at first seem and you find a few nice nooks and crannies. Several hotel cats wander the grounds and there are a number of aviarys with caged birds. You're either a fan of caged birds or not, but to us the cages always look too small and the birds don't seem to have much room to fly... The mini market was OK but limited in choice, the local Spar is a ten minute walk away and has more variety. Eating in not recommended. The service and surrounding suggests better food than you actually get. We ate at the buffet once and were very disappointed. Lukewarm food half an hour after the restaurant opened and desserts that were tasteless meant we only ate there was once - it was also expensive and not a patch on Sadi, a real restaurant about ten minutes away. The buffet service also means an unrelaxing meal as people are constantly pushing chairs around and walking past etc. The weather in Los Cancajos can be very changeable - in early April a storm meant a number if Thomson excursions were cancelled (whale watching) or rearranged to a different day (top of the island) so be prepared to be flexible. The local buses are ridiculously cheap and you can get anywhere for a few euros. On the whole four stars - good hotel and accommodation let down by poor food.

Room Tip: Tips: 1] ask for a room on the second, fourth or fifth floors with a sea view in Block C. They might...

Stayed here for a week during February half term. Allocated a room on second floor of B block which had a partial sea view . Spacious apartment with plenty of storage space. Furniture etc a bit dated but was part of the charm. Found beds very comfortable. Unfortunately the weather was colder than anticipated and needed to wear a fleece or similar a lot of the time even during the day. Pool area was spacious and would have been ideal if weather had been better. We were on B and B , plenty of choice for breakfast but v busy and sometimes difficult to get a table but no major hassle. Used local restaurants in the evening, Pulpo on the beach was good as were two others which I can't recall the names of but there are reviews on Trip Advisor. Very quiet area however so don't expect lively evenings. Used local buses, cheap and reliable. Local town has a sprinkling of bars and restaurants as well as selection of shops. All in all a pleasant holiday , very relaxing.
