The Staff of Life is a very pleasant pub in Ticknall, Derbyshire. It has a large bar/restaurant and welcoming, helpful staff. I had to eat in a hurry as I had an appointment and they made every effort to make sure that my food was served quickly.

The food was all right, perfectly acceptable but not special and a bit on the expensive side for what it was. It did not feel as if it had been cooked by a chef, more that it had been bought in and assembled and heated, but I may be wrong about that.

I would go there again if I needed a meal, but not to dine out.

The Staff of Life is a pleasant old Pub with a good car park and a well maintained outside seating area (for the summer months). Inside, the large room is laid out primarily for diners and seems to lack much of a facility for casual drinkers. The decor seems to lack any theme and does not add to the dining experience which, although providing a good menu, is expensive for basic quality pub grub.

The prices of the meals, are over-inflated for what is served. Whilst portion size is good, the food itself is mediocre, at best. The food was over-cooked, and bland. Experimental desserts didn't quite meet the required standard, and the two main meals came out separately, minutes apart.

The owner was not rude, as I'd seen in other comments, but the restaurant they are aiming for is a little out of their reach at present. It's just ordinary pub fair, with a slightly higher than should be price tag. It's a shame, as the place has potential, but they need to up their game significantly for the prices being levied, as currently it's just not worth it.

We stopped here for lunch and would return next time we're in the area. We ordered a beef burger with chips & salad (~£7), and the steak & ale pie with chips & peas (~£10) which took about 20 minutes to arrive. The food was very tasty, and decent portion sizes. The ale was well kept, good selection of non-alcoholic drinks, drinks were average price. Staff were friendly and the dining area and toilets were clean and well decorated.

We went fro Sunday lunch and found the food, atmosphere and service only acceptable.
Beef was brisket (which I don't normally consider a roasting cut) and all veg arrived on your plate.
Wine is v pricey.
Others appeared to be enjoying themselves, but service is really slow.
