“Not very welcoming”
Reviewed 3 June 2009

We chose the Staff of Life from internet reviews and were a little disappointed. You arn't allowed in your room until 6pm, and must be out by 10am. When we arrived the welcome we got was less than friendly, we were told what we mustn't do but not a lot about anything else. We ate in the hotel that night and the meal was lovely, the staff were much friendlier so we thought we must have just caught a bad time when we arrived.
The room was clean and the bed huge and comfy, the shower needed a strong turn to get it going, even my husband had problems. The hospitality tray was missing some items so we felt the attention to detail was lacking.
At breakfast we didn't notice that cereal/fruit juice was on the other side of the menu and had to be asked for (we were used to helping ourselves to this course) and weren't asked if we wanted any so had the full english which was very nice.
We all felt, that, instead of being made welcome and looked after, we were treat as if it was our priviledge to stay there.
A little more attention to detail and a friendlier welcome would make The Staff of Life a good place to stay.

Didnt stay at the Staff of Life, but went with a party of six for Sunday lunch. An impressive menu that didnt live up to its promise. The waiter wasnt sure what the soup of the day was but decided it was leek and potato. My husband and 2 others had the soup. It was quite darkly coloured that made them suspect if it was leek and potato there was something else in it. A very large bowl of heavily spiced soup that may have been leek and potato but was so hot and spicy it could have been anything. My starter of pear and stilton salad was no better. Hard, tasteless pear with a smidgin of stilton and undressed salad. So poor, I sent it back mainly uneaten. On to the main courses. My chicken breast with BBQ sauce and chicken - about one drop of BBQ sauce, making the whole meal very dry, sister in law Chicken Sunday lunch - no stuffing as advertised on the menu, roast potatoes that can only be described as damp and yorkshire puddings that can only be described as originating from Farm Foods! Nothing home made anout them. Niece - chicken and mushroom lasagne - virtually no chicken and so hard on top it appeared it had been microwaved. The others had steak and ale pie and chips which they said was nice but not cheap at £10 each. Overall extremely disappointing, Not once did anyone ask us if our meals were ok despite the large amount of leftovers on the plate. The young man who took our money said he had taken off the cost of the salad I had returned like he was doing us a favour. I wouldnt have paid for it anyway! For the prices they charge I had expected a far better meal. It was not surprising that we couldnt get in The Wheel in Ticknall until 3.30. Far superior meals at lower prices. My first and last visit to the Staff of Life. Shame, it is a very pretty little pub.

We had the choice of any of the 6 rooms because we looked at them 6 months before our stay....with lots of choice at cheap prices, we wanted to get the best possible deal because we were visiting the area with friends.
We had one of the Superiour rooms and our friends had one of the double rooms in the main building. They said their stay was very relaxed and comfortable and that they were made to feel very welcome. They also said it was good to stay in a place that actually surpassed thier expectations in all areas.
We can recommend anyone to stay at this fabulous country pub bacause we met some of thier customers who had stayed at the staff of life before while on business in the area. They really coudnt have been more complimentary about thier experiences.
The meals were great too and we all agreed that we had chosen wisely!

Recent visit to Ticknall resulted in a pleasant weekend stay at the Staff of Life. We received a friendly welcome and immediately felt at home. Room was very clean and comfortable provided with tea making facilities including fresh milk. Good food in restaurant and excellent wine list. We were well looked after for the duration of our stay and would have no hesitation in returning.

If you ever feel like a country retreat in Derbyshire, this is not the place to stay, After a 3 hour drive we arrived at 3 pm, The staff of life do not let you check in until 6 pm, we knock on the door, to a barking dog and an angry member of staff who told us off for arriving early. To their credit they did let us put the bags in the room, however we were then ushered us back to the door and kicked us out into the rain. That was it, for tthe next 3 hours we had no where to go. It was harldy the welcome they advertise on their website.

We stayed out of the way that evening, but did brave the courage to ask what time breakfact was. Breakfast runs from 9:30 am, no god if you were wanting an early start. We crept down for breakfast to the resturant which was all shut up, dark and no power on, we sat there for 15 mins wondering what may have happened. Breakfast was shocking, it was made in a hurry and cold, as soon as we finished we were guided back to the door and left!! they obviously have no time for their guests, but are quite happy on charging premium prices.

I cannot believe in this day in age such a hostile hotel could exist. If you are ever visiting the Ticknall Derbyshire area, please choose some where else, the hospitality is at an all time low, the food is terrable and the service is non existant.
