“Dawn chorus by the river.”
Reviewed 6 April 2013

What a contrast, the last time we stayed it was a winter Narnia covered is snow and magical. This week its transformed into Spring with a Dawn chorus second to none. Delicious food and wine as usual, a restful nights sleep in crisp white linen and then the dawn chorus. We left the windows open so that we could hear the birdsong at dawn and were awakened to the beautiful sounds of the valley and river. Such a peaceful spot at any time of year, and then that bostin breakfast, bliss.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but for a special treat try 10, 11 or 12.

Thanks to all at the Saracens Head Inn for making our break fantastic. We've been going here every year for the last 6 or 7 years. The rooms provide all the necessities and the food at breakfast and dinner is great. Of course the bar is also another plus. It's close by to the Forest of Dean for the many choices of walks and cycling. It's also ideally located for the cycle from Symonds Yat to Monmouth. Already looking forward to next year's trip.

The food here is expensive for a pub and the menu pretentious, unfortunately if you are staying at Symonds Yat East and do not want to drive anywhere this is the only place for an evening meal, the staff are very pleasant and the pub is good with a selection of beers but it would benefit from some more basic realistically priced food.

A stop for a snack lunch on a winter walk prompted a spur of the moment hotel booking. We'd stopped several times previously either for just a drink during a walk or for a snack at the end of one. The thought of a comfortable base for a couple of days meant the pleasure of the walking without the boredom of driving here each day.
I made a mess of the original booking but a quick e-mail soon had things sorted and we arrived to a very friendly welcome and were shown to a comfortable little room with a delightful river view.
Our evening meal was first class and the service was exceptional. Breakfast the next morning was very good and we both started our day's walk feeling uncomfortably full.
We stayed for three nights (having only booked two) and were treated to fine dining and excellent hospitality throughout the stay. ALL the staff we met were friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed the break.
We will most certainly be back to take advantage of the walking, the scenery and, above all, the magnificent hospitality.
If we have a regret it has to be that by reporting this on Trip Advisor we will be encouraging other people to visit and the hotel might be full next time we want to visit.

Room Tip: You definitely need a river view!

We stayed in the hamlet of Symonds Yat, but not at this hotel/pub, but if I ever visited the area again, I would certainly consider it.
We popped in for an evening drink. A couple of pints of butty Bach ale and some red wine. Both nice.
The bar area is very modern but rustic, welcoming and light at the same time. there's also an adjoining restaurant area. We ordered from the restaurant menu, eating in the bar area. The soup was delicious and hot, homemade for sure.the mains were also very high quality with superb flavour that just hit the spot. We didn't order dessert.
Staff were friendly when bringing dishes.
Recommended.

Enjoyed Sunday lunch, in the warm and cosy surroundings. Service and food were great and the price reasonable what more could you ask.

We parked on top of Symonds Yat Rock and walked down, saved the extra car parking charges, the walk back up was a Lonely affair as the family "let me" go up on my own......

I went to the Saracen's Head whilst staying in the charming village of Symonds Yat. We initially popped in for a quick drink but ended up staying until stop tap.
The bar is average sized and there is also a restaurant which we didn't go to because the bar was so clean and cosy. It has views of the river, a lovely open fire, a cupboard full of board games, friendly bar staff, a good pint and lovely food.
I had the Black Brean served on pea and mint fritters with pak choi. It was absolutely beautiful and a nice quantity.
Hubby had pheasant with roasted veg which was equally lovely.
We didn't have desert as we were full of lovely food and beer.
I can't wait to go back to this lovely pub in this charming village. I can't recommend it enough.
