“idyllic weekend break”
Reviewed 25 May 2012

A group of Porsche car enthusiasts from the south east region of "The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club(TIPEC) spent a perfect long weekend break at The Royal Lodge hotel overlooking the river Wye at picturesque Symonds Yat. The accomodation was very tastefully decorated (modern contemporary) with excellent food (breakfast and dinner) in an informal relaxing setting. a noise free area where the only sounds are those of the birds. Great value for money.

My wife and I had been treated to a week-end stay by my daughter. We were realy looking forward to our stay, but were somewhat disappointed when we entered our room. The "en-suite" facility was more like a wardrobe with a toilet and shower. The toilet required several flushes to empty waste. The wash basin was in the actual room, which is just not good enough. The curtain over the window was hanging off some of it's rings. These are details that should be noticed by the cleaning staff. I have stayed at Premier Inns that are far superior to this.
The cost of the room certainly wasn't worth it. However, if the charge is for the view and the food, then I suppose it was justified. Absolutely lovely breakfasts, whether full English or continental. Main evening meals were really well cooked and presented with plenty on your plate.
Would I stay here again? If the price came down drastically to reflect the state of the rooms, then I may consider it. Otherwise - no.

We thank our guest for taking the time to post their review.

We are very pleased that our guest enjoyed their food whilst staying with us recently. We do apologize that the room that our guest was allocated was not to their satisfaction.

The Royal Lodge is an ancient Royal hunting lodge and all of our en suite, river view rooms are different in size and character. Three of our small standard rooms do have small WC and Shower en suites with separate wash basins. We apologize that our guest found this not to be to their standard.

We do urge all of our guests to advise us if we can do anything for them during their stay and if they have a problem to please let us know. It is unfortunate that the guest encountered a problem with the WC, however without knowing about this we were unable to rectify the problem. Whilst we do en devour to check all aspects of our products at all times there are occasions where some elements can let us down and this appears to be the case with the WC on this occasion.

With our standard rooms we aim to provide Clean, Comfortable and welcoming rooms with fantastic views. Priced from only £59 per night we do believe and our reviews show this to be a very reasonable price for our rooms.

The nature of the building and history of the Royal Lodge provide character and unfortunately on this occasion was not the same as a Premier Inn that this guest may have preferred.

Kind Regards
Guest Relations.

We stayed for 2 nights for a birthday treat. The location was superb. The room (19 - The four poster) was great with a fabulous view up the river. The staff were helpful and attentive. This was a quiet location and a perfect combination for a relaxing break. Would certainly recommend giving it a try

Room Tip: Nearly all rooms (except one) have a river view. The Four poster room has windows on two sides makin...

My wife and I have just returned from a two night kgb bed and breakfast break at The Royal Lodge for £69 including a bottle of wine. The situation is just great, on the banks of the River Wye, and Symonds Yat East is just a gem of a place if you just want to sit and watch the world go by or if you want to do some walking - we did a bit of both. The hotel staff are quite exceptional, they are very friendly and attentive and nothing seems too much trouble for them. The room was perfectly adequate and clean and had a lovely view of the river. We ate in the hotel restaurant on the first night and the food was very good and plentiful. The breakfasts were also excellent. I could not get a wifi connection in our bedroom but understand that it is available in the lounge and in some of the other bedrooms. There's a pub called The Saracens Head just a few yards from the hotel which has a great selection of cask beers and also serves good food if you're looking for a change from the hotel. All in all an excellent experience.

Room Tip: The upper rooms might give more privacy and better views of the river.

We stayed here for one night (9/5) and, despite the bad weather, really enjoyed our stay. The room (12) was on the 2nd floor - so a bit of a struggle with luggage (but help is offered) - and had lovely views overlooking the river and the garden. The bed was comfortable and a good size for two people. The bathroom was large, with a deep bath, and the shower was adequate, although the temperature could be a bit irratic. It may be helpful to include an anti-slip mat for the bath?

Dinner was enjoyable, and very reasonably priced. Many ingredients are sourced locally, and the beef was especially delicious.
Breakfast includes an extensive continental spread, and the usual fully cooked version, freshly made to order.

The garden at the front of the hotel is lovely, and would be a great place to spend a warm - dry! - evening with a glass or two, savouring the view.

Room Tip: Front rooms overlook the river - so ask for one of these.

We would like to thank our guest for taking the time to post their review.

We are very happy that our guest enjoyed their stay with us despite the bad weather that was experienced during their visit. The restaurant holds AA awards for both breakfast and dinner and we are pleased that our guest enjoyed the food from our restaurant during their stay.

We do offer non slip mats for our showers if required. We look forward to welcoming the guest back to The Royal Lodge in the near future when the weather may be more favorable.

We stayed for two nights at the Royal Lodge and found the staff and atmosphere second to none. Nothing was too much trouble, rooms clean and comfortable, breakfasts deserve a 5star rating. The only disappointment was evening dinner, which left room for improvement. I would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Very accommodating, accept pets. No rooms on the ground floor for people with mobility problems.

The Royal Lodge as a AA 4 star Guest Accommodation establishment aims to provide comfortable hospitality for all of our guests. We are please to see that our guest enjoyed there stay with is and the level of service we provide.

Great to hear that our award winning breakfast was appreciated. We are saddened about the comment regarding evening dinner and always strive to provide quality dishes from our kitchen. We urge our guests to advise us should something not be to their liking so that we may have the opportunity to rectify any issue that may have arose.

We look forward to welcoming our guest back in the very near future.
