“Luke and Louise's Wedding”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

This is a real GEM of a hotel and a FABULOUS small-wedding venue.
We could not have asked for better service. Helen Minnie and her amazing team welcomed us all with sincerity from the start. The staff have a real knack of learning names and relationships at such a rate that within an hour of arrival we ALL felt like personal friends. Every single request was fulfilled at speed and with genuine concern for the individual's needs. A drink. a seat for the elderly, a parasol for the hot sun during the wedding. A sensitive word of encouragement for those who felt overwhelmed by the occasion... and repeated appearances by the most helpful and kindly staff with mops and buckets as drinks inevitably tumbled from hands and tables. The entire staff were on task full-time providing the utmost care for each individual and I simply cannot recommend Helen Minnie's service AND that of her team, more highly. 5 star service!
Then there was the food....absolutely wonderful! Freshly cooked to mouth-watering perfection and locally sourced so it was as fresh as can be. I'm just sorry we didn't meet the chefs personally to thank them.
The hotel itself is more 3 star than 4 star and displayed a few quirks which caught us out occasionally...taps and door keys that turn on/off the wrong way, the £100 on the credit card and a lack of facility to cool rooms. But I'm sure that if this hotel can fill its rooms regularly with customers they will be able to upgrade very soon. I will be recommending the hotel to anyone I meet....for a trip away or a wedding venue. My husband and I will definitely return for a romantic weekend for two as I'm sure Luke and Louise will too.
Lastly can I point out to anyone considering a stay in the area that the Royal Lodge Hotel is the perfect spot to stay for sight-seeing, canoeing, walking, climbing and just chilling! It's ON the river and at the bottom of the Yat and with parking, gardens, lawns and amazing views.
Thank-you Royal Lodge and Helen Minnie and her team.

Room Tip: Room 16 has amazing views and Room 13 is the best King-size bedroom.

On arrival I was told I needed to give my credit card details to give £100 - they wouldnt take the money out but it was as a security. I have never had this in a hotel and it did come out of my account and took 5 days to go back in. Room was very clean and simple. Everything we needed. Shower was freezing cold all of the time - not good at all. The room itself was really hot and we left the windows open all the time just to cool off. The TV was poor - tiny screen a long way from the bed and it kept freezing. We didnt eat at the hotel so can't comment on food. Lovely location. Slept very well but 10am is an early checkout. Wouldn't return as I do not feel it is a 4* hotel.

We thank our guest for posting their review.

The one hundred pounds taken on check in is a pre-authorisation. Our confirmation email clearly states that; we take this as a security against any room account unpaid or room damage caused in the duration of your stay, alongside the check out time. The time it takes for the funds to be released is entirely dependent on the bank for which you used for the pre-authorisation.

We are sorry that this guest did not appreciate the fact that we are four star accommodation as opposed to a four star hotel.

Kind Regards,

My wife and I stayed here this week . The welcome that we received was almost one that old friends would have. The staff are very cheerful and no wonder working in such a beautiful setting. Food was of a very good standard and service with a smile was second to none. There are so many walks from the hotel but you must make a visit to Symonds Yat Rock. We look forward to staying again.

Room Tip: Our room No13 had a great view of the river

Great short break at this lovely hotel on the River Wye. All the staff we encountered were professional and friendly and always had time for us whether helping or just chatting. The food was excellent and the home made pies were the real article rather that frozen pie cases and filled "at home". This is a very vibrant area with lots of river activities ongoing. We chose to take the bikes for a decent long ride. This was excellent and we were able to cycle along the Wye on an old railway track and then on the roads and lanes before getting into areas of the Forest of Dean. Be warned to take the big boy's shorts though as ther are some serious hills. I especially thank the staff for their great attitude when I set the toaster on fire! Try it - you'll like it

Room Tip: We had a classic with great river views - even when it was hissing down.

The Royal Lodge Symonds Yat was a terrible disappointment when we checked for a one night stay. The room was a very basic double room with a shower cubicle on one side and the toilet room on the other side. In the bedroom was a washbasin and mirror. The whole room had a musky smell.
We then requested another room which turned out to be a family room - double bed and a bunk bed but at least the bathroom was separated from the room.
Again the room was very basic and the toiletries were a pump hand wash and the shower and shampoo in a pump hand too! Extremely basic and not even worthy of a two star let alone 4 star rating that it so proudly presents!

It is unfortunate that this particular guest was unhappy with their recent stay.

The Royal Lodge is an ancient royal hunting lodge and has varying levels of rooms. The small cosy budget room that was booked was changed to a larger higher level room with no added charge. We are sorry that this is still not acceptable.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Royal Lodge for two nights, the hotel is in a perfect situation with valley views on the River Wye. The food was excellent and we chose to have dinner in the hotel on both nights, breakfast was again excellent and plentiful.
We chose to go at a peaceful midweek off season though I have been told that the village gets very busy at peak season.
