I had taken my husband for a mid week break in worcester. We decide to go to symonds yat on our way back home - When we arrived there - What can I say, it was beautiful (the location). NOT THE ACCOMMODATION
So I popped into the hotel to see if they had any availbilty, Welcomed by 3 young girls behind a so called reception - they said they had 1 room left and said it was a superior room - god I would have hated to see a standard - the room smelt of damp and there was cobwebs with dried out spiders sitting in the dusty webs in the bathroom.
We stay and had a snacks in the bar - the staff in the bar area were lovely

Would only reccomend it if you were desperate

Stayed here to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday with a party of 18 adults and children. The rooms were all clean with great views of the river. The only word of warning would be that it's a steep climb to some of the rooms and little provision has been made for disabled or elderly guests. That said the location is superb and the food both for our evening meal and breakfast was excellent. The staff were friendly and looked after us well and little touches (such as providing a cling film dispenser for us to wrap up birthday cake) made our weekend.

Decided to book a last minute night away to suprise my boyfriend. Had already visited the Royal Lodge's Restaurant a few weeks before and due to its location and garden decided to book for an over night stay.

The Location is amazing, and the view from the bedroom window was superb but thats about where that ends...

The decor of the hotel is dated, think 70's fawlty tower/blackpool b&b and you're closer to the mark -not an awful lot 'Royal' about it. I had paid extra for the 'superior' room which constituted mismatched furniture and grubby bathroom. YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE VIEW which is spectacular. The 'superior' room we booked was NOTHING like the room in the photo on the website, and certainly not worth the 'discount' rate of £90 we paid!

The room aside, we had been prewarned on arrival that the restaurant would be serving until 2100. Arriving down in reception at 20.20 we were promptly told the kitchen was closed due to being quiet. All well and good apart from the fact you're in the middle of nowehere, its now 2030 and a Sunday night....

Staff unhelpful and unapologetic

As stated before you're paying for the view, which is unlikely to change drastically in the 100m or so to the Saracens Head where we had an amazing dinner. Staff were brilliant, and it seems our experience was definitely not the first to fall upon their ears.

Take my advice and head to the Saracens!

Our family had the mis-fortune of visiting the Royal Lodge during a fantastic weekend visiting the Wye Valley. We have one daughter aged 9 and a new baby aged 4 months. After a lovely day out (a Friday) visiting Goodrich Castle, we decided to visit Symonds Yat for our evening meal. My wife and I having visited before wanted to enjoy the evening in the beautiful river-side setting. We headed for the hotel thinking that we would stand a good chance of getting a good quality meal for ourselves and my daughter (something a bit better than chicken nuggets and chips!).
We entered the hotel with the pram and asked if there were any tables free in the restaurant. We were curtly directed to the bar at the rear by a woman from the restaurant, after buying drinks and waiting a few minutes we asked one of the staff if we could go through to the restaurant. A young man said he would check if there were any tables free (strange we thought as there were numerous free tables when we arrived). He returned claiming they were full but if we still wanted to eat then we could eat at the bar or in the 'conservatory', we opted for the conservatory and were shown into a 'shabby and outdated lean-to building adjoining the restaurant. We could clearly see through to the restaurant and all the unoccupied tables. My wife walked around to the reception to ask why we were told the restaurant was full - A lady explained that '' we're not that keen on children in the restaurant'' and asked how old our daughter was. My wife explained that she was nine and very well behaved and used to dining in restaurants. The lady then decided to allow us into the restaurant and explained that she would bring some menus through. (We did wonder what they would have done if we had been staying at the hotel).
We spent a few minutes looking through the meals - the childrens choices were extremely limited and not particularly suitable for younger children.
By the time we were ready to order - we were then asked if we had been informed about the food 'shortages' . . she went on to explain that unfortunately 3 of the main dishes (out of the six) were not available . . .
All in all we decided that it wasnt worth staying - We rightly or wrongly got the distinct impression that we werent welcome!
We decided to leave and seek food elsewhere - somewhere, where we would be made to feel welcolme and somewhere where children/families were not frowned upon!
An unfortunate pre-historic attitude to hospitality in the UK ! No wonder families head abroad.

Because the River Wye at Symonds Yat is such an idylic spot it gets very busy, especially on a warm summers day. This means that you pay a premium price for food and it can take a time to arrive. This also applies to the Royal Lodge. On the plus side the rooms are clean and large. The four bedded room we had was ideal for a family. The staff were all efficient and pleasant. The garden in front of the hotel is large and pretty making it great and safe for small children. There are lots of attractive walks from the hotel along the river. Try not to drive to the hotel during peak times of day as the road gets very crowded.

Have just had my retirement 'do' here and I couldn't fault it at all - this from the time of booking (months ago) to today, 2 days after my 'do'. Graham (manager) was so obliging and keen to do all he could to make the function a success, which he did with flying colours. Nothing was too much trouble for him before, during and after the day - HIS PROFESSIONALISM AND ATTITUDE ARE SECOND TO NONE.
He was totally flexible on all things ranging from the numbers attending, menu, and even inside/outside loction of the main event, depending on the weather, making totally valid suggestions all through but leaving the decisions to us. Brilliant!
Food was absolutely first class and TOTAL value for money with a great choice provided.
The hotel itself? Fabulous location; has been very cleverly refurbished as it still retains it's charm from past eras whilst moving very much into the present day where it matters. Hey - it's not just Graham though - all the staff were helpful, polite and very cheerful - this was from our arrival at midday on Sat to our departure the next day. All rooms were booked by people from our party and they all shared these views.......go on - treat yourself - GET DOWN THERE, you won't regret it!

We booked the entire hotel for a large family group's annual walking weekend.
Graham and his staff had just taken over when we booked, and he was very helpful in every aspect of the booking and arrangements.
The location is second to none -- right in the heart of the beautiful Symonds Yat, on the river, surrounded by woodland.
The hotel has been renovated and is rated 3 star. The reception rooms retain a quirky feel, but we felt totally at home. We had the best room (4 poster bed) which was stunning, but everyone else was delighted with their rooms too -- all but one overlooking the river.
The food was generous, really tasty, imaginative and varied, and we arranged our menus in advance. Drinks were served in two bars, cream teas were available in the garden overlooking the river and a wide range of visitors took advantage of the facilities.
While we went for the walking (biking also fantastic there), Graham also arranged canoeing for us, and we took a short river cruise.
And to cap it all, the stay was exceptionally good value.
It's not a 5 star hotel, but you won't find anything better in its class.
Thank you.
