Another hidden gem in Newtonmore. A wee visitor centre in the main street is the start of a great day of walking. Here you collect your wildcat guide and then you set off around the village trying to spot over 100 elusive, colourful decorated wildcats. If you scorrectly spot 25 cats, you receive a certificate, 50 a prize. You can make the day as long or as short as you like. A fantastic way to see Newtonmore, which conceals lovely tearooms and shops. We will definately be back to spot more! one of the best days out in the area!

We thoroughly enjoyed this with our two little children. The great thing is that this helps you explore places in Newtonmore you might not otherwise see. You can see how this has helped maintain a sense of pride in the community.

The Wildcat Experience shop was staffed by a lovely lady who gave a certificate to our daughter for finding 35 of the cats. If you do not make it to the shop during opening hours to purchase a kit, the post office across the road offers them for sale as well.

Do be careful (especially with little ones) whilst walking about as some folks drive a bit too fast through town on Main st.

We only had a few hours in Newtonmore and we had contemplated doing the Wildcat Trail around the outskirts of the town, however when we visited the Wildcat Experience we opted for that instead. We had great fun meandering up and down the streets and backlanes of Newtonmore and successfully spotted 25 cats in the short time we had available and claimed our certificate at the centre. We will be back to find the rest and will tell all our family and friends and encourage them to take part too!

We're just back from a week in Newtonmore and had a ball trying to find all the painted wildcats around the village. We only managed 65/110 but saw parts of the village we'd never have gone to. We were a party of 6, with 4year old twins, a teenager and 3 x40ish year olds. This is something everyone can join in with and the aim for us was to get a certificate (25 cats) and a small prize (50 cats). The boys loved taking them in with their book to 'show & tell at nursery!

Before I start my review I should explain what this is! Basically there are models of wildcats all painted differently hidden around Newtonmore. You buy a pack at The Wildcat Centre for £7.99 which is a bag (which can be kept), pen and booklet with pictures of all the cats in it. Each cat is numbered and there is a map in the book and you mark them on it. Then depending on the number of cats you find you get different rewards. You only need to find 25 (out of a possible 111 - although only 109 were there when we visited as 2 were in for repair) in order to get a certificate.

So explanation over here comes the review. We first encountered this back in August 2010 when we were staying in nearby Kingussie and had a fab time doing it. We didn't manage to find all the cats and enjoyed it so much we came back and stayed in Newtonmore this year to finish it!

This year we found all 109 of the cats that were out but I would say this took up most of the week that we were in Newtonmore. The kids loved it and had us out wildcat hunting come rain and shine and I have to admit I got totally addicted too! (Husband would say this was a bit of an understatement!)

So if you are Newtonmore even for just a day it is worth doing especially with kids! However when we were there there were all ages doing it! One older couple were doing it in their car (should say you couldn't get all the cats doing it this way!) so would recommend it for anyone but best done by foot!
