“Two Star Hotel with Five Star Service”
Reviewed 7 September 2010

I was in a party of 12, everyone was full of praise for the excellent standard of food and service. Yes, it may need moderised but it was very clean and comfortable and extreamly good value for money. We are all definately going back again and taking more people with us.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Not glamourous but lovely flowers and foliage make up for dated decor. Rooms are comfy though basic. Food is stodgy, slapped on to the plates, tasty and mainly fresh, choice of sweets displayed on a trolley, far too sweet and creamy, fresh fruit features only as garnish. Friendly staff, clad in tartan, try hard and were super efficient in the dining room. The tiny community of Newtonmore is worth exploring, hotel is on the main road but a little away from shops, check out the small loch and nature reserve opposite the hotel. Reasonable for large parties or as a last minute option if you can get a good price, for one night only, if you're using Newtonmore as a base there are more charming options.

Suited more to coach parties as during the day the place is deserted and seems to be more of a base. Dining is a bit Regimental as you have to dine at 7.30 and have a set menu each night 3 courses for £18 which is good value but not for us as being on a break we like to have a bit of a timescale to eat and we might want to order a steak or something different. The hotel offers good value as a B&B with no frills and a comfy bed with a nice breakfast. The staff seems to be in short supply during the day and we had a 10 minute wait for a receptionist when we arrived also couldn't get a drink on return from another hotel at 11.30pm, so seemed a bit early for the bar to close.

I cannot believe the "excellent" reviews about this hotel. I saw a run down hotel with peeling paint outside and shabby decor inside.
Maintenance was very poor with loose window latches, very poor shower cubicles and massively outdated furniture and fittings. One room I viewed was thick of dust and dismal.
Food was ok but nothing to write home about.
The lounge was awful and looked like a very poor care home!
On the positive side he bed was comfy and the bed linen was clean but don't look behind the bed.
The staff seemed to be well organised.
A must visit in Newtonmore is the Highland Folk Museum which was great!!

OHIML, General Manager at Highlander Hotel, responded to this review, 12 July 2010
We are sorry that your expectations were not met during your stay with us here at the Highlander, but we are somewhat surprised by your comments as we are usually praised for the high standard of cleanliness within the hotel, and our lounge is seen as a cosy room with very much a ‘home from home’ atmosphere.

We have a rolling maintenance programme here – if you had a specific concern and advised us of it we would have been happy to try and rectify it.

We found the hotel to be in need of modernising but the room was clean, comfortable and warm. The lounge did slightly resemble a residential home with the various sofas and old fashioned carpet but we didn't use this often. The food was good and we were offered a choice for each course. Breakfast was excellent and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.

I would certainly recommend the Highlander to anyone.
