“don't bother”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

The food is highly overrated. Don't bother eating here. The attentive staff don't make up for the poor quality of food - the arbroth smokie fishcakes are pretty much just mashed potato, with no fish or cheese The steak is mainly gristle. And the vegetarian nachos are overly sweet. Yuck. Apparently the lamb shank was okay, but I wouldn't go back to this place ever.

We are so sorry that the reviewer feels this way but it is difficult to make any sensible reply as she never brought this to our attention at the time - despite the attentive staff!

It is obviously true that you 'cannot please all the people all the time' and thankfully this review is not in line with most of the reviews under this heading (hotel) and our other listing (restaurant).

had to write this after reading review of bullit03. Also read his review of the Letterbox Restaurant from the same time by the same person,,,,strange to say the least!!!!.Have to say - wife and I have holidayed in this area many many times over last few years and eaten here and many other places in the area at these times - this is every time our first port of call. Food has always been plentiful, hot and tasty, served by friendly efficient staff in relaxed atmosphere (no airs and graces). Never been let down - ever. Will be back again to the area next April and September and certainly will head to the Glen for value meals. To anyone reading these reviews (and those of a certain rival further up the road) heres some advice........look through the windows and see where the local folk eat!!!!
And I don't have any connection with any of the businesses here - honest!

Came back to eat on 3 nights this new year having stayed locally, and having enjoyed the place for the last 2 years... The food is a massive OK general stuff, but doesn't match the prices, and doubtful on freshness of food, however cannot fault the customer service in the face of mostly from my experience frozen food dinners and overpriced wine and beer.... (new Chef needed I would say, plus buy fresh food....)

Room Tip: we only ate in the restaurant

Thank you for taking time to post essentially a positive review. We are sorry though this reviewer feels that we are 'slipping' but are encouraged to learn that this cannot be too bad as he visited us three times during his recent visit. We are somewhat upset at the comment with regards to 'frozen dinners' as we do not know how or why he got this impression which is certainly not the impression gained by other recent reviews. We have been aware in the past of another establishment in the area telling guest that we served 'frozen TV dinners' which is of course wholly incorrect and hope that they have not started this up again! In excess of 90% of the food we serve is prepared on the premises and we always use fresh vegetables (except peas which are frozen for freshness). The remainder is made up of some desserts and items like whole-tail scampi which we believe is as good a quality as home-made. Over the New Year period we served well in excess of 100 meals every evening and are sure that by enlarge our guests were more than happy with the food and service provided.

We came across The Glen Hotel during our stay in Newtonmore when we were looking for somewhere to have some good food and drinks- we definitely found it!
The menu has plenty of choice and the quality is great! It's simple food done well - I would personally recommend the haggis stack- Yum!
The Landlords and bar staff were friendly and we enjoyed chatting to them while enjoying the drinks they recommended. However, what really topped our trip in Newtonmore off was when we returned for the second evening to have some dinner when the landlady came out with a heart shaped balloon and champagne to celebrate our engagement which we had mentioned the previous evening.
Overall this is a great pub with great food and hosts- we will definitely be returning!

If I am in Newtonmore and want a vegetarian meal I go to the Glen Hotel. It has a good choice of veggie dishes, I had veggie haggis, neeps and tatties the last time I was there. Meals are generally served in the bar which has a good atmosphere, seems to be a mix of locals and visitors. The bar staff are friendly and efficient, and the food prices are reasonable.

We ate here due to recommendations through trip advisor. Booked a table for sat night as others had said it gets really busy. I'm so glad we did book. It was really busy when we arrived and people still coming and going when we left. Staff really friendly, lots of choice on the menu and specials board and food was great. This is a real country pub with lovely home cooked food
