Some friends and I decided to take a road trip from Douala for the day. Our first stop was the Limbe Wildlife Centre. I can't say enough about this place. I am 43 years old and have never experienced a place where you could tell the animals were loved and taken care of as good as they are here. The Tour Guide that we had was very knowledgeable of each species and very friendly as well. I would most definitely recommend this stop for anyone that will be in the Limbe area.

Quite small and you could get round in 15 minutes but it is well worth spending more time. You can stop and gaze for ages at each enclosure just seeing the primates interact. It was very moving reading all the information about how each animal was rescued. Visit the cafe afterwards. Not cheap but great food and atmosphere.

The people at LWC have been doing a really top-notch, world-class professional job in provide the best support to the orphan's of the bush-meat trade in Cameroon (primarily primates). None of teh animals you see there has been bought. They are all confiscated - so please do not call it a "zoo". The vets work hard, teh enclosures are constantly worked on and improved - it is a fight given with limited resources. It is worth visiting and supporting with your entrance fee or even a generous donation. Arne's cafe inside is a good way to wrap up your visit with a beverage and there are souvenirs available just outside and at Arne's cafe.

It is very comforting to know that there are organizations that care about animals, this place is a live testimony of it.

The Center features a multitude of apes, chimpanzees, and monkeys. All live in large open enclosures or very large cages with an array of ladders, platforms, etc. for them to use. All have secure enclosures, but a number of the most interesting, such as great apes, have enclosures that allow visitors to come close enough to see well and take good photos. The colorful weaver birds and a range of flowering tropical plants add to one's enjoyment.

All of the animals have been rescued from poachers and illegal holders. They appear well cared for and vigorous - moving about and at times playing with each other. The Center is doing a great work in fighting extinction of these fascinating creatures.

The Center is within walking distance of the Botanical Garden and also the Hotel Miramar. Admission for non-residents was 3,000 CFA or about $6 US a person, including use of camera (video extra).
