Reviewed 2 November 2013

I enjoyed this place, for the most part. We went for one night. My boyfriend absolutely loved it and, while I did like some parts of it, I wasn't quite convinced. Linda and Sam are lovely and interesting and friendly. Sam took us up a hill for a hike which we really enjoyed. The rooms were sweet and the toilet and shower fine, although I didn't really like not having a wall or ceiling for the bathroom - no privacy! The main problem for me was the temperature in the room. It is a small Banda with no fan and, my goodness, it was hot! I had to pour water on the bed to sleep. Also, it is a bit misleading to call itself a beach resort as its at the bottom of the garden behind a very big gate, so you can't actually see the water. You can walk down but there is nowhere to sit and you cant swim. Still, it's good that the all inclusive package includes sodas, that's a nice touch. We liked the cats and dogs and i was a little upset to see Kenyan guests shouting and screaming at them.

Gosh , we are sorry to hear that it was hot in the banda. Some days do heat up. We do have a traveling electric fan , however, and if someone needs one we will happily provide it . We encourage our visitors to ask for anything they need, fan included. We are sad to hear that our guest suffered in silence. Thanks for letting us know. Also swimming in the lake is a guests choice. Many do it. Bilharzia is prevalent in Lake Victoria as well as hippos in some nearby locations. Caution is always good. We do help arrange swimming in a local pool if guests ask us.

I visited Wayando Beach Club for 3 nights in june/july with 2 friends and had an amazing experience. The place is very affordable in regards to what you receive when staying at Wayando. We stayed there as a part of our 5 week trip in Kenya, Uganda and on Zanzibar and it was definately one of the best places we stayed.

Both Sam and Linda were extremely welcoming. Both my friends had fallen ill before we got to the Beach Club and it proved to be a nice place to recover. Linda also new a very good doctor who which aren't always easy to find when traveling through East Africa.

There are some nice trips to be taken around the area. Small hikes and boattrips on the lake to the different islands.

It's very rare to come across a totally honest environment that is not playing on the "Eco" badge. The Bandas are stunningly simplistic and very well thought through. Showers and toilets are excellent; composting toilets work fine. Don't be put off by it. The staff are tremendous and simply cannot do enough for you. And the food puts many 5 star resorts to shame. Beautifully simple food and well prepared. And Linda is a fantastic host. Simply come, relax and enjoy. You won't get better ,

Rusinga Island is a non touristic get away in Lake Victoria.
When you do get here stay at Wayando Beach Club!

Linda Okatch is a wonderful host with lots of interesting and colourful stories to tell. Sam, Joyce and Maggie (staff) made our stay very pleasant.

Linda is very eco minded which you can sense throughout the entire resort.
She makes the best Eggplant Parmesan and we had lovely banana pancakes for breakfast.

The rooms are individual round African style houses surrounded with lovely flower arrangements. The rooms have a bathroom with shower and Eco toilet (no flushing).
Every bed has a mosquito net.
You sleep surrounded by nature and it's accompanying sounds. You'll be woken up by the various specious of birds singing in the morning.

Wayando Beach Club is a small paradise. Book full board, you'll get amazing dishes served made from fresh local ingredients. Including soda's.

When you would like to undertake something Linda and Sam are most helpful making arrangements. We made a tour to the Ruma National Park that is only 20km away. We left very early with a driver and a breakfast picnic basket to spot Antelopes, Giraffes, Zebra's and more.

Thanks Linda for a wonderful and warm stay!

Excellent place to get away, or to stop over while traveling around Kenya. Superb international foods, adventures in permaculture, geology, boating, exploring unusual places. Owner Linda is an artist and rich with info about the local people and their culture and how to experience it all, or you may just want to relax by Lake Victoria. Really nice experience at a super price.

I visited Wayando with my parents in what was their summer vacations and 3 weeks visit to Kenya. We loved the rural environment surrounding the Club. During the day, we sailed with the traditional colorful boat to visit a small island and its community. We caught some kilos of small fish with the local fishermen during the night thanks to their floating lamps technique. Villages and historical sites can be visited with local piki-pikis. Cottages are in excellent condition, service is great and food is delicious. The perfect 2-3 days stop out of the classic touristic route.

It isn't easy to find attractive, environmentally friendly, affordable, clean, comfortable accommodation in Kenya. Wayando ticks all those boxes and more. Excellent fresh seafood, warm, welcoming hosts, a sense of being part of the local community, and thoroughly relaxing. Linda and Sam where full of local information and always ready to help organise things. Wouldn't stay anywhere else if I went back to Rusinga.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Wayando Beach Eco Lodge is a Friendly and Intimate Eco Resort on the shores of Lake Victoria. Come rest under the trees or swing in a hammock. We are practicing permaculture and organic gardening and serving our guests wholesome and local meals. Often it is eclectic. Boat tours are easy with our new boat and engine. Guests enjoy bird watching, hiking and cultural exploration. We can organize guided boat excursions for day fishing or night fishing for Omena or to other islands and around Rusinga to look for Hippos. Currently we have four self contained bandas available for guests. In total there are four doubles with large bed each and one single with twin beds for those who want to share a room. An extra bed can be added to two of the bandas for an third person or child. The new banda has a second room with bed. Total of 7 private or semi rooms. Max of 10 to 12 guests. Camping is also available if you want to bring your own tent. We do have several two man tents and available bedding etc. There is room to run so children are welcome. We are relaxed and welcome small groups and families who just want to hang out with the trees and the birds. The water level in the lake has risen incredibly recently so the beach is much eroded. We are hoping the situation on the lake changes back to the way it has been in the past. The bar accommodates about 30 people or more and meals are served buffet or family style. Music is played in the bar but kept low and we have no TV to spoil the tranquility. You are free to chat, dance a bit or play cards or other games that we can supply or you may bring your own. ... more   less
