“Karafuu, an unexpected experience”
Reviewed 20 June 2010

I have worked in a famous hotel for two years, and our family has visited many great hotels, but the Karafuu hotel really went beyond any expectations. The staff is so amazingly friendly, and not just because this is the standard, they really treat you like family and friends. The accommodation is beautiful, spectacular views, fully cleaned and made up twice a day with flowers and everything, and really spacious with also a beautiful big balcony! The food was actually great, they had a different themed buffet every evening with lots and lots of choices, among which live cooking by different chefs. Also the breakfast was amazing, sitting on the beautiful terrace, sipping African tea or coffee, while watching over the beautiful see with all the changing colors. Also Karafuu has a lot to offer for recreation. In the morning you can make a beautiful walk along the beach and watch the locals fishing in their colorful clothes. If you like sports, there's a tennis court, you can play beachvolleyball, swim in the pool with ocean view or join the aqua aerobics lesson. If you like leisure: lie yourself down on one of the soft beds at the beautiful soft sanded beach while reading a good book that you can also get at the hotels bar (they have a lot of choices of books in many languages), have a relaxing and soothing massage or take a course Swahili: Jambo! If you like adventure: the hotel offers a lot of different excursions in Zanzibar and you can learn scuba diving by Lars and go out to see the beautiful fish from a real close distance. If you like games more: there's soccer and pool table at the bar where you can also get good cocktails and snacks and you can use the internet 24 hours a day. Also, if you are lucky, the Colombo monkey will visit you're accommodation. These really sweet and social creatures only live in Zanzibar. I recommend Hotel Karafuu to everyone!

I have worked in a big and famous Hotel for two years, and I've seen a lot of Hotels in my live. But my experience with Karafuu hotel went beyond any expactations that I made of a good hotel. The staf is so friendly and not just because it is the standard. They really treat you as family and friends. The rooms are beautiful, with spectacular views, and are fully cleaned and made up twice a day. The food is delicious, a different themed buffet every day, with a lot of choises (among which live cooking by different chefs). Also the breakfast is great, sitting on the terrace, sipping from a lovely African tea or coffee while watching over the sea with its beautiful colours, amazing! Also at Karafuu you'll never be bored, you have the beautiful pool with seaview, the colourful sea with its many many beautiful fish and soft sand, beach volleybal, a scuba diving centre with a great manager: Lars, tennis courts, a childrens playground, a soccer-, pool- and tabletennis table. Also the hotel organizes a lot of excursions and activities like boattrips, aquaearobics and even a course swahili. You can get a relaxing massage at Karafuu a henna tattoo and you can check your emails 24 hours online. At the bar you'll find books in different languages and nice fingerfoods, cocktails and snacks. So you see, there really is something for everybody. If you are lucky you'll even see the Colombo monkey at Karafuu, this sweet and social monkey only lives at Zanzibar island. I really recommend this beautiful resort to you!

Stayed five days at Karafuu Hotel holiday with my family of four persons.
A holiday that could have been reasonably if not for the food tat will bring bad memories for a long time. The reason is shortly that both me and my daughter been diagnosed with dysentery. Since we did not eat any meals at all outside the hotel we most likely picked it up at the Karafuu. Something that coming guests definitely should know about. I have tried to contact the Hotel management for an explanation but there has been no reply.
Have to admit that it feels strange after living almost two years in Africa to be infected at a so-called first class Hotel
But it has to be said that the diving centre was a good. A clear light in the darkness.

We have travelled a lot both for leisure and work. Karafuu was not what we regard as a 5 star hotel. It was very clean, the rooms were roomy and people were nice. Especially Masai warriors were very friendly. But from the 5 star hotel we expected more, although it is in Africa. Some might say, that our trip started under bad feelings because we did not get our luggage. The other bag came after 4 days but the other one was lost for ever. And what could we buy from this 5 star hotel? No swimming suits, no men size shoes, not really any summer clothes (not at least the perfect size). The sarong, sun screen, lotion, shampoo etc they had. For 100€ we could have had a taxi roundtrip to the capital, but the hotel staff said there is no places for shopping either. We were happy to get the contact lens fluid all the way from the pharmacy to the hotel by a staff member. The food at the hotel was eatable and OK, but there was only one choice for the dinner. This buffet did not have almost any seafood or local food with spices, even though the island is very famous about them. The "local food" they offered was perhaps tried to be served for Western tourists, not someone seeking for African taste experience (other of us is a chef). At lunch time there was 2 places to choose where to eat, but the menu in both places was quite poor. There was no fitness center/gym. The whole island had electricity problems, and thus the hotel had 3 electricity stops for 2 hours per day. This made some nights a bit sweaty.

You really do not have many things to do inside the hotel area, and there are no attractions near the hotel either where you could walk or bike. So we didn't do much else than sat on the beach and enjoyed the sun for the first days. The beach is very nice. White sand and many sun beds with mattresses next to the palm trees. Swimming was easiest in the pool, because in the ocean (at the site of the Karafuu hotel) there is a lot of sharp coral and sea urchins. However, there is a cement pathway leading to a sandy bay, but it is accessible almost only at low/medium tide. At any time it's good to have a pair of rubber shoes.

The day when we met Lars and his team at the diving center changed our OK feelings up to the skies. They could sell and even borrow summer + swimming clothes. They also helped with our medication problems, and guided to pick up a nice scuba trip to the Northern cost as well the round trip over the island arranged by the hotel travel agency. Most of all we, earlier scared of deep waters, accomplished PADI Open water course and Advanced course thanks to Lars, Malle, Iddi, Daniel and others. We will never forget the fantastic experience we had with them. Someone said this earlier here and we honestly do agree; Lars YOU are Karafuu. You are not only a heavyweight professional in diving but also honestly good-hearted. You really care of people and do everything that people enjoy diving. Because of you we may come back to Karafuu to dive with you. The dinner together we will eat somewhere else.. Thank you for everything. See you soon. Best regards to Hermine as well.

Without the diving center, we would regard Karafuu as a 3 star hotel. We expected more and were a pit disappointed at first. But thanks to the diving center and Lars we would give 4+ stars, and came home with whole bunch of wonderful memories.

The rooms at Karafuu were HUGE! Almost bigger than my apartment! They are very comfortable and cleaned very well. All bungalows have a front terrace (all ground floor) with an outside bed and chairs on it, as well as a clothes line to air out the beach clothes. There is no sandy beach at this hotel, only a coral beach with a cement pathway leading out to a sandy bay which is really only accessable at low/medium tide. There is however a sandy area to use hte sun loungers which is quite nice and dotted with palm trees. The food at the hotel was average, eatable, but not something I would pay for again. There are no attractions near the hotel, so don't expect to do anything other than sit on the beach. Overall, not sure it is a 5 star standard, or how it won the best resort in Zanzibar 5 years running, but it is comfortable.

After a 5 day Safari in Tanzania we needed to be planted somewhere like Karafuu to un-wind, relax and chill out. We loved the pool and pool bar area. The restaurant staff (Winston, Phillip, Juma and Paoulo) were fab. We loved the swahili and masai nights beside the hotel, great performances and food was different. Francis deserves a medal for his "AQUA GYM AQUA GYM" twice a day, and we loved his Jambo Buena song.
The island has had no electric since 10th December 2009 and this has had a major effect on many things. Drink suppliers are extremely limited, the obvious-no electric menas running from generators and only electric at certain times through the day and night.
The entertainment in the evenings was good, varied. The Coconut Band were good, the Acrobat show was great.
If you want to complete switch off and relax for a while then this is a great place to go. Just remember to bring some plastic/jelly shoes as the beach has some very sharp coral and strong tides.
