“For the rhinos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2012

These are dark days for the rhinos all over the continent. And you come here for the rhinos not for the facilities. The rooms are basic but clean. The restaurant is basic but the food is good. People are smiley and helpful. The location is very good, on the way from Kampala to Murchinson falls NP.
The highlight is the rhino tracking. It is wonderful to see these huge creatures so close when you are on your foot. It is unforgetable. Also it is great to know that the money you pay is going for the conservation and breeding of these amazing creatures. I want to thank again to Ziwa for all their efforts. They are doing a great job.

The rooms are simple and very small but clean. We stayed two nights in the family room which had a small sittingroom, and a shared bathroom. Power was unreliable and not much hot water. The food in the restaurant was good enough, staff was friendly and helpfull. It helps if you order diner in advance. At night we saw two rhino's walking the ground, also bushbuck, cranes and monkeys. Glad we stayed here, they could upgrade their rooms a bit to attract more people to stay the night.

Thank you for your review. I would however like to clarify that the Ziwa accommodation on the sanctuary is a privately owned business and has nothing to do with the rhino program. The conservation and Rhino program are managed by Rhino Fund Uganda. For people wanting to stay over, there is another affordable accommodation option within the sanctuary namely Amuka Safari Lodge.

I travelled around Uganda using public transport and this place was easy to get to - bus from Kampala and then boda ride from the main road.

The accommodation is the usual backpackers stuff - very basic room but clean and tidy. The food is good and reasonably priced and the drinks are very cheap and cold.

But the main attraction of this place is the animals, of course. On the boda ride in I saw vervet monkeys, bushbuck and cob plus the accommodation area has a section for orphaned animals. When I was there they had some young oribi in a compound plus a semi-tame fully grown bushbuck wandering around!

I didn't do the official rhino tracking but had the fantastic bonus of the rhinos coming to me! Just before it got dark a rhino came right up to the restaurant area. We were told to keep the noise down and not use flash photography and we just sat and watched this huge animal wander around grazing.

Ziwa does great things and it's nice to know that the profits from food and accommodation are going towards the breeding programme and the eventual release into the wild of the rhinos.

One of the highlights of my trip to Uganda.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. Whether for a day trip. an overnight stay, or like us, a short break. The price (food and accommodation) is fantastic value for money. The basic rooms are indeed basic, but they are clean and comfortable. The bathroom facilities are always clean and the water is warm. The setting is beautiful and the birds and animals are fascinating. The food and drink are plentiful and affordable. Best of all is the customer service. Angie and her family are wonderful. They and the staff are patient, knowledgeable and generous with their time and advice. Angie's work is an inspiration and the happiness and hard work of her staff is testament to this. Thank you all again for a well needed and well provided few days of rest and recuperation.

Room Tip: E-mail Angie with any concerns or queries and she will immediately provide you with the answers.

The staff were all super nice and helpful, the room was clean (though basic, but we were expecting that, as we stayed in the "budget" section, not the new guesthouse), the shower was hot, the food was excellent (and large portions), and most importantly, the rhinos were amazing! The preserve currently has 10 rhinos, with several more babies on the way. Our guide told us they would be getting zebras soon as well!
Definitely a must, if you are anywhere in the area, or even if you're not!

Room Tip: The "budget" rooms are basic, just 1 or 2 beds, a few clothes hooks, and a mosquito net, b...

I satyed at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on 26 July 2011. The choice of accommodation given to me was Guest House, Budget or Camping. I opted for Budget which is a basic room with 2 beds and mosquito nets. The ablution, not attached but had HOT water showers and FLUSHING toilets. At the cost of $15 for a room sleeping two, this was good value on my backpacker budget. We were surprised that no gate entry fee is charged. For the on Foot Rhino Tracking there is a tracking fee per person and a ranger guide fee per group. Overal it was a great experience, good servise, excellent food, and a well managed project! We got to see the young rhino Obama and Justus playing with eachother. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND A VISIT TO THE RHINO SANCTUARY TO ANYONE TRAVELING UGANDA!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Sanctuary offers all levels of accommodation, Mid to High end NEW Lodge with pool , Guest House, Bud...

The rooms are just concrete boxes with a thin mattress and mosquito net but the service is incredible and the food is very good. It's a good stopover on the way to Murchinson Falls from Kampala. I came down with Malaria that I contracted the week before in Malawi just before I arrived at the lodge and the owners were very helpful and took care of me like family. It was a lifesaver staying here, maybe literaly :) We're looking forward to visiting again when the luxury camp is finished.
