We arrived around 8pm from Gulu as we were delayed taking off whilst the roads added further travel time. The owners called us to enquire about arrival time so they could ensure that the food would be timed for our arrival. Now that is service.

We had lasagne as starter and it was magnificent. Main was thinly sliced veil cooked to perfection with onion sauce and vegetables. Dessert was chocolate salami which was simply incredible. Everything was just really really nice and we even took pictures of each course.

Getting proper wine is an issue outside Kampala but this place has a good selection of Italian wines. We enjoyed the Chianti immensely. And the price of the three course meal: 40000 Uganda shillings which is about £10. It is an absolute bargain. Add the wine at only another £10!!!

Add to the above that Bwana Tembo is ideally located for Murchison Falls National Park as it takes only about 10-15 minutes to reach the northern gate of the park. I strongly suggest that you stop at Bwana Tembo before entering or when leaving Murchison.

We did not spend the night at Bwana Tembo, sadly. They have limited accommodation available but I am sure that in due course that will change as the restaurant alone will ensure a growing influx of people. So book well in advance for accommodation. If they are full then just go for dinner there and stay at the nearby Murchison Fort.

We opted for the tented accommodation and thoroughly enjoyed the simple yet comfortable experience that definitely heightened our sense of African adventure. Elephants nearby on both days only added to the authenticity.
And we applaud the use of solar energy.
Bwana Tembo's location close to the north entrance meant a swift entry into the park and immediate encounters with it's wildlife. We could not help but feel sorry for everyone who opted for southern accoms having to drive to and line up for the ferry and then drive over a half an hour before reaching the part of the park where the wildlife is concentrated.
And if all that wasn't enough, meals were positively orgasmic, easily vying with the best restaurants in Italy.
Our thanks to Francesco for his knowledge and passion.
Go.
Stay.
Enjoy.

Room Tip: Any tent or banda has a beautiful sunset view and stands an equal chance of encountering elephants.

I stayed here with my parents in August 2013 and it was wonderful! We stayed in two separate bandas/cottages overlooking the river and enjoyed sitting out on our personal porches, watching the beautiful sunsets. The cottages were the cleanest I have ever come across during my travels through Africa and were very thoughtfully furnished (large mosquito net around the bed and the side tables - very convenient; comfortable furniture; super clean bathroom with a great shower). The food was delicious - definitely the best we had during our safari. Authentic Italian three course meals for dinner, very tasty! Breakfast was also great and the staff was happy to organise delicious packed lunches for us to take with us for in the park and travelling home. Davide was very welcoming and happy to chat with my dad about the area, the history of the property, and answer any random questions we had. The camp is close to the Murchison Falls park entrance and apparently elephants sometimes visit the camp, although we did not have the pleasure of experiencing that when we were there. Can definitely recommend this place if you are travelling to Murchison Falls!

You're in good hands with Francesco and Davide. I showed up last minute and they helped me plan a weekend trip to Murchison falls, a game drive and a boat ride. Also, I informed them the day before that I was vegetarian and was treated to handmade spaghetti and pumpkin ravioli, fresh roasted zucchini and eggplant, and more! Excellent place to stay at all price levels. Highly recommended.

I was very pleased with my stay at Bwana Tembo. The owners were friendly and very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife. The food was EXCELLENT, and a nice surprise for me after spending the previous ten days eating very bland local meals!

The rooms were great. They were spacious and welcoming. I loved that the entire property was solar-powered. The view is absolutely breathtaking.

Access to the park was quick and easy. Definitely worth the price, and I would recommend Bwana Tembo to anyone traveling to Murchison Falls.

Cabins were clean, comfortable, and stylish, with excellent views overlooking the Nile. Davide was welcoming and social, and his mother's authentic Italian 3-course meals were an unexpected surprise. Gentle, relaxing atmosphere, with easy access to the park gate. Absolutely worth the price. One of our group forgot a piece of luggage, and Davide tracked us down on the road to return it.

Our stay in Bwana Tembo Safari Camp was really good and we had a wonderful weekend in a great location!

However, it is quite expensive for what you get and I felt as if the owners were trying to pitch it at the high end market without some of the extras that a 4 or 5 star place elsewhere in Uganda might offer. When we've stayed at lodges of similar price, we've been offered a drink on arrival and a snack for example. Here, we asked for a snack and were told there was nothing available - although later given some nuts. Other lodges of similar price have also had larger rooms and had extra touches like candles on the restaurant tables etc too. There was also only one waiter who, whilst lovely, spent his whole time with his head in the kitchen chatting so it was hard to get his attention. I felt with just a little bit more time and investment, this could become even better and perhaps then seem that it is worth the cost in comparison to other lodges in the area. However, I do know that Murchison Falls is expensive anyway so perhaps this is why. We might stay at Red Chilli next time to compare!

The owners were lovely and very helpful, although the lady (the mum?) did smoke constantly even when we were settling up the bill! Their advice around where to drive to see animals and their help booking the boat trip was great though and we were very pleased with this. I did try to enquire about getting a ranger to come with us on safari etc beforehand via email but my questions were never answered directly and, when we arrived, the ranger was already booked up which was a shame.

The location is great - just outside the park so you only have to pay for the days you choose to go on safari. We saw elephants from our decking area and we also happened upon some on the way out which was very exciting!

Finally, one thing that is a shame is the big Transco (?) complex just near the national park and that you pass on the way to the lodge. This is not a criticism of the lodge but just something that's a shame in the park in general - Transco are VERY visible with trucks and drilling areas which did add disappointment to our visit.
