I have lived in Durgapur, but, that was in the previous century :-) and my impressions of public services and infrastructure were not very positive so I was wary. I was disappointed that Rose Valley (Previously Ginger and now Park Prime!) did not have online reservation. However things started becoming comfortable as I closed in. Firstly, the response to my mail was good and reservation was confirmed. This sounds a better option now as there is no monetary commitment and hence no cancellation charge ;-) I did confirm, however, the day before my travel to ensure the reservation was on record and I was expected and gave them my tentative arrival. I landed by Volvo at City Center bus junction in the heart of Durgapur and it was great that I could walk with my strolley luggage to the hotel in less than 10 minutes.
With cigarette smoking being much higher than Indian average, i was bothered about the smoke smell, but, was really happy to have a clean fresh room. The vestiges of Ginger were there, but, while the new management has not done any upgrade they make the place comfortable and eminently livable. Soap, shampoo, bed, linen and towels etc were in good order and of a decent quality. AC hummed nicely and was very efficient- an important quality in humid Bengal.
The wifi speed was fantastic! This was a great bonus. I had a great night's sleep.
Next day I was woken up early, as requested. The running hot water was immediate, but, probably because of the old plumbing it would advisable to let the water flow for a few seconds in the sink as it was colored. This is something that the management needs to look into. Finally, the buffet breakfast which began at 7 was a good spread given the price of the hotel.
All in all, given the fact that I paid roughly 1,800 rupees for a night inclusive of the complementary breakfast, I found this one of the best value for money stays anywhere in the country. Given the renewed contacts in Durgapur and excellent travel option in frequent Volvo buses I am sure I would be back sometime and I know a great place to stay. I hope they maintain and better the experience.
