“This is what dreams are made of”

We stayed here for two nights as part of 6 day tour. Amazing location, when the only minor flaw you can find is the lack of shut eye, due to the noise of the thrashing waves keeping you awake, you know you have found a little piece of heaven (hence the only poor comment on sleep quality, which was nothing to do with the beds). We e-mailed ahead and managed to book a superior room, right on the front of the hotel, with a large balcony and quite possibly the best room view we have ever had. Staff in the hotel were very friendly. The fact that you could use their sister spa hotel (which is equally as beautiful in a different way), just yards up the road was an added bonus. Unawatuna beach itself has a nice feel to it, not touristy at all, with a nice mix of people including families and backpackers, with a couple of nice bars. It is possible to swim in the sea here, unlike many of the other places in Sri Lanka. The ocean view restaurant is just another plus of this place. In summary, this place (or it's sister spa hotel) should feature on all bucket lists.

Room Tip: E-mail ahead and ask for a superior ocean facing room (if you aren't a light sleeper, otherwise...

The staff here could not have made us feel more welcome. We stayed in a sea view room for 5 nights and even a cyclone in the middle of our holiday, left the staff unfazed. They managed to provide hot food when most of the street was in darkness as the electricity was affected and many holiday makers staying in other hotels ate in our hotel. The food was very good and we noticed that even when the power was restored people came back to the restaurant again. It was great having access to the pool at the sister hotel (5 mins walk) as we were hassled quite alot on the beach by locals trying to sell us stuff. They are not aggressive but can be quite persistent so the pool was far more relaxing.

Room Tip: There are a variety of different rooms available so it is best to ask the hotels advice.

We had the deluxe double room for most of our time which was more than enough for two people, there were lots of positives: the king size bed was very comfortable, there was a large balcony, amazing sea view and large bathroom. If you don't mind hearing constant waves crashing, this is a lovely room but note there is not mosquito net. We did however, try the standard double (cheaper but not that much different) which had a smaller bed but also a mosquito net which we very much needed having received quite a few bites! The staff are very friendly, wi-fi was a bit slow at times but generally ok. The hotel are also very happy to organise any trips for you, we organised a pick up from the airport and a lift to Kandy which both went smoothly. The breakfast is ok, but I would recommend the dinners especially the vegetable curry which was delicious the first night we stayed there. On the whole a pleasant stay, a place with clean and comfy rooms and a great location in Unawatuna.

Room Tip: Go for the standard double rooms as they really aren't that much smaller than the deluxe and the...

There are lots of positives. The people at Thaproban are very warm. Our flight got 9 hours delayed and we arranged for a hotel pick-up and the staff was efficient in arranging a pick-up for us at the airport. We were greeted by Dias the hotel’s reliable driver. Despite the late check-in, the staffs were very accommodating and helped us with our luggage. Our room was the sea view facing room on the 2nd level and we have unblocked view of the sunrise. Breakfast menu is the same daily, something they can improve on. The seafood BBQ dinner at the hotel was satisfactory. The good thing about hotels near Galle is that they have free wi-fi hotspots in most hotels unlike those of other region including those in Colombo. All in all, we love the service from the staffs here. We could never ask for more. Also, they have a friendly nosey pet dog who never fail to greet you too.

The negatives are the noise from the nearby discos. My partner got affected by it a lot. And the sea view unit has a joint balcony means your neighbour can enter your balcony and into your hotel unit if doors are left open. But there is a partition so you can do your own thing without being watched. We kept our doors closed most of the time because we want some privacy. But we had a good neighbour during our stay.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are a plus point.

I stayed elsewhere in Unawatuna but ate breakfast several mornings at Thaproban. The hotel is very clean, high quality, and excellent, friendly service. They also provide access to free wi-fi for guests. The hotel is centrally located with easy access to the beach and to the shops, restaurants, and bars along the beach road. I would highly recommend Thaproban for dinner or hotel on your trip to Unawatuna.

We stayed in the mid November, would recommend this staying to everyone who wants to see wonderful sea from window, try tasty food, discover very skilled and friendly service, and to be like a big family's member there..Location is great, was hot and sunny at daytime, nice weather, raining in the evenings though.. Our best wishes to hotel, hope we will come back someday...

We stayed in both hotels - in Thambapanni Retreat and in Thaproban Beach Hotel. I liked both of them! The rooms are cozy and comfortable. The first hotel in the interior of the island, go to the beach 5 minutes. The feeling arises that you live in the wild jungle. Monkeys, squirrels, birds - do not panic! Guests they do not interfere. But you can look them in the wild.
The second hotel on the beach at 10 meters from the water. Sound of the ocean is very calm. Someone might not like that just prior the hotel is not a piece of beach. However, a wide beach on both sides of the hotel.
Staff perfectly trained. Solve problems and help in every way. Since the hotels are small, the staff knows their guests in person. It is a pleasure.
We tested the cuisine hotel just last night. I regretted not having dinner at the hotel before. Chef well done! Many thanks to all staff the hotel, trying to make our stay memorable!
If I come to Unawatuna once again, necessarily to stop at these hotels.
