I stayed here for one week in early March, with my husband and two daughters (1 and 4). I must agree with so many of the previous reviewers, that the staff is so genuinely friendly and helpful! Our oldest daughter loved playing around with the staff and she was at ease with them from the start, which is a really good sign!

We stayed in one of the two beachfront rooms, which was perfect for us with the small children. We were a bit concerned at first that the restaurant, which is right outside, would be noisy, but as this is not a party place we were not bothered. The food is really nice and we had an excellent selection for breakfast. The staff was very flexible in giving us food that the children also enjoyed. The dinner setting on the beach was beautiful, and there are also plenty of other restaurants to choose from.

From the pictures I can see that there has not always been a beach in front of the hotel, as the sand moves back and forth along the beach, but when we were there the beach was nice. Not the widest I’ve seen, but enough for some sunbeds and for the children to play. The waves can be a bit high though.

The main drawback is, as other reviewers also have written, the bathrooms. The towels also smelled a bit funny some days, even though they had been washed. The rooms are basic but spacious, and they really have all you need. The beach in Unawatuna is completely filled up with small hotels, so if you are looking for a deserted paradise beach, this is not for you. I would however love to stay here again!

Room Tip: Get the beachfront rooms if you travel with children!

We recently stayed in the penthouse room and have nothing but praise for the amazing staff at this hotel. The room size was huge and perfect for a family but would advise better suited for older children. It was a bit of a minefield for our two year old due to the room being duplex with a precarious staircase to the second floor which meant we couldnt relax for a nanosecond with the toddler. Also the railings on the balcony are low and large furniture placed at the edge meant we had to keep it locked all the time again because of the pest, sorry, two year old. It was perfect for our older two (6 and 11). The view was the most amazing view out to the Indian Ocean and the sound the hotel literally was on the beach. Perfect. The staff were without exception wonderful and possibly the nicest hotel staff we have ever encountered. The food was delicious (the restaurant was set up on the beach) and the ambience perfect.

I would have scored this fab find a five but for a couple of slight negatives. The room definitely needs some upgrading, especially the bathroom which was rather like a prison cell. It really was horrible (we do like a decent bathroom). Also the balcony furniture was super uncomfortable. A park bench and a rickety chaise lounge. Decent balcony furniture would be a wonderful addition and enable guests to enjoy the view comfortably.

This hotel has two sister hotels in the town too. We also stayed a couple of nights in the year old Thaproban Pavilion. This wasn't on the beach but did have a nice pool. The location wasn't quite so good either. But the hotel itself has it spot on with decor, bathrooms and balconies! It would be perfect if they could take these elements of the Pavilion to the Beach House as really the Beach House is already fantastic, but could be the best hotel ever with just a bit of renovation.

We can't wait to return to Thaproban and would like to thank everyone there for making our holiday so wonderful. We will come back once the two year old stops climbing :-)

Room Tip: Go for the penthouse! As long as you don't have mischievous toddlers.

Fantastic start to our trip in Sri Lanka. A very warm welcome from the staff. Rooms were bright, with a nice big bed and lovely balconies. We went for the Deluxe room which had a balcony with beach view and was very airy. The restaurant on the beach in the evening, with lanterns hanging overhead was fantastic. The best spot on the beach. We ate there one night and wished we'd done two. The one fault with Thaproban is the breakfast wasn't great (especially poor coffee), and was overpriced. Avoid the water in the minibar (cost 175Rs), and pop to one of the shops down the road instead (70Rs).

Room Tip: We had a Deluxe room on the first floor - had a great balcony with a view.

What a great place this is - not because of the rooms which are fine but in need of a bit of a makeover and not because of the food which is really good (try the Sri Lankan breakfast for a special treat!), but because of the staff. The staff are simply wonderful and nothing is too much trouble for them. I have never been in a hotel where the staff seem as genuinely happy and pleased to provide service to the customer. It is a great experience to be greeted by smiling faces as you come down for breakfast or when your room is being cleaned. Star of the show for my money is Numani on the front desk for whom no request is too much trouble - she is wonderfully attentive, fun to be with and a real joy! Oh, and the hotel is right on a magnificent beach so you can just swish onto it after a self indulgent breakfast!

Room Tip: Rooms 3 and 4 are on the first floor and overlook the sea.

The main advantage that have this hotel is probably the kindness and the professionalism of his staff. This staff take realy care of the Customers.

The rooms are OK. They are not really isolated and you can hear the sound of the street, if you are in the room in the front and the sound of the waves if you are in a room in the back of the hotel. The shower is large but need some maintenance. The bed is confortable and the climatization work well. The rooms at the back of the hotel have a really nice view on the beach. The beach is really near of the hotel, you get out of the hotel, and you are on the beach. This is a nice beach. It's clean but in the water, it have some stone who hit your legs. Seek for the locals peoples, they know where swim.

This hotel is about 20 minutes by Tuk-Tuk of Galle. This is really easy to go at this place and the price will be around 400-500 ruppee. For come back, it's easy too, the mainly Tuk-Tuk drivers know where is Thaproban hotel.

The breackfast was nice. And for the dinner you will eat on the beach. The restaurant is really good and really appreciate of the tourists.

We loved this place – not because it is fancy but because the staff really couldn’t have been more lovely and helpful – our room was fine – comfortable – but what is great is that the hotel is right on the beach (fantastic and you can also use the pools at their other 2 hotels too for a change). It is also in the midst of Unawatuna (so it is a bit noisy, but didn’t bother us and easy for shops/coffees/drinks elsewhere). We had dinner every night of our stay 10 meters from the sea! – Thank you so much in particular to Briander and Nuwani for enabling us to have such a great 5 day stay - we look forward to returning soon…..

Room Tip: Higher rooms are possibly less noisy.
