“Great location and friendly staff”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We stayed 4 nights at the beach house and enjoyed every minute. From the moment the lovely Nuwani welcomes you and checks you in to when you leave you are treated like friends and guests. Lovely spacious rooms that are right on the beach and close to the attractions. The food was good too. You are able to use the pool at the larger sister Traproban Resort and Spa which is only a short walk away. If you want a massage have one there- the best we had in Sri Lanka. ask for Ranjan.

Room Tip: Try rooms 3 or 4 Upstairs balcony overlooking the ocean.

We spent 6 days at the start of our tour of Sri Lanka. It was just the place to relax, enjoy the sun and beach, eat fresh fish every day in the excellent restaurant and get acquainted with Sri Lankan hospitality. Staff made us feel really comfortable. We stayed in the ground floor room no 1 - the door was right next to the restaurant, which made it a bit hard to sit on our porch in peace and quiet. Unfortunately there was a very unpleasant smell from the drain whike we were there so that is why we recommend the rooms on the first floor. I will give the hotel my warmest recommendations, however, because of the service thar was given to us during our stay.

Room Tip: The rooms number 3 or 4 on the first floor have seaview and more privacy and the rooms on the ground...

We decided to travel to Unawatana after a bad experience in another hotel (The Safari, Yala). It was late when we arrived, but the staff were very friendly and on being shown to our room we were delighted with our view. We had a balcony overlooking the restaurant and beach (room 4), where we had a drink from the mini bar to soak up our surroundings. As we were travelling in June (low season) most of the resorts were very quiet with little / no nightlife, but Unawatuna had lots of small huts along the beach with lanterns / fire providing a beautiful setting looking out to sea and had a nice buzz about the place. I would definately recommend Thaproban Beach House, it seemed to be the hub of Unawatuna. Having Coeliac Disease, the staff and chef came to talk to me before dinner to assure me my food would not come into contact with gluten and they made me a fresh fruit platter and omlette for breakfast. It's got the perfect location, service and atmosphere and cheered us up after being dissapointed with previous resort. It was one of the highlights of our trip and I would love to visit again.

We had a wonderful 4 night relaxing beach stay. Staff are so helpful and friendly nothing is too much trouble. Even got a good rate being off season. Stayed in room 3 and was big enough to accomodate extra bed for our child. View from balcony right out overlooking the beach. Food was terrific and we ate on our balcony a couple of nights due to kids being asleep early. Allowed us still to be part of the action. We also were allowed to use pool at sister property thaproban pavillion which gave us best of both worlds. Special mention was Priyantha he always had a chat and a laugh with us. All the staff are a credit to this hotel and they really make you feel at home

On our arrival our room booked was not available so they kindly upgraded us to the penthouse Room 11. It was nicely decorated with a lovely balcony overlooking the beach.

Comfortable large bed, tea & coffee making facilities, drinking water were all supplied. This a busy little resort with a pleasant atmosphere. The breakfast was quite good although if you don't want salt added to your fresh juice you need to ask.

Staff were helpful and very pleasant.

The bathroom was in need of a really good clean in the shower recess was mouldy, there was no soap holder available. If it was not for the pleasant staff I would only rate this hotel 3 & 1/2 stars but there is not a great deal of choice of good hotels in the area so we were happy to be staying there and it met our needs for our 2 night stay in Unawatanu.

Room Tip: Do not stay on ground floor it opens directly onto outdoor eating area. The best rooms are 3 & 4...

Thaproban Beach House - Sri Lanka

We stayed at the above for two weeks in April 2014. We were attending a family wedding and decided to stay there after searching their web site. It sounded just what we were looking for.

We were not disappointed. Nuwani and the rest of the staff were very kind and attentive, wanting to please us all the time. Nothing was too much trouble.

The food was outstanding and very reasonably priced. Even when we turned up with the whole wedding party for dinner (22 in all) they coped very well and quickly attended to our needs.

We would thoroughly recommend this hotel, together with their sister hotel The Pavilion which was equally good, and which we visited on many occasions, as some of our party were staying there.

Our thanks go to all the staff for making the holiday so special.

We were not disappointed.

Totally rebuilt since the tsunami, the beach house has an open, airy feel. We were very pleased with our choice as the position is right on the beach where one can dine at night on the sand. Plenty of fresh seafood to choose from - you pay by weight and it is cooked for you immediately. We found all the staff to be really friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. (Special thanks to Prenantha!) Breakfast can be Western style or Sri Lankan. Ground floor rooms No. 1 and 2 would be good for parents as children can play safely on the front veranda, or one could keep an eye on them as they play in the sand just metres away. The 2 rooms above, 3 and 4, were our pick, nice large balconies which we shared for refreshing drinks.

Room Tip: Superior rooms No. 3 and 4 on the 1st floor have large balconies that overlook the sea - a good plac...
