We booked for 6 nights, didn't stay not a single one. No hot water in what they call standard room. Room was small and dark with wholes in the wall and not very clean, especially bathroom. No safe lock on room door.

This is a very nice place to stay with clean rooms and very friendly people who are gladly to assist you with everything! In the Black & White restaurant you can have good meals. I really enjoyed my stay here and will definitely go back to this place.

So when i got of the bus, i knew surfcity was supposed to be pretty close, but i couldn't find any signs..... So it's well hid in the end of a pretty shabby alley, not what i prefer when i travel alone.
But when i got there a lot of people welcomed me. I didn't book in advance, but that was no problem, ( wanted a room in the new section but it wasn't avalible) a got a nice big room with a big bed, fan and mosquitonet, hot shower, and breakfast for 1500 rup, nice!
On my way to by cigarettes ( only 5 min) i had some sort of heatattack/dehydration, witch became a sort of panicattack. I managed to get back to surfcity, and rohan( One of the staffmembers i met earlier) saw that i wasn't well. He gave me water and some food, and made sure i had everything i needed. I was so grateful for his help and after 1 hour sitting with the straff in the restaurant talking i was feeling better again. Really some of the nicest staff i met in Sri lanka!!
Sadly, because of the tsunami and a manmade reef, surfcity lost theyre beach, and business suffers from it. I would really like to say that it will only take you Max 5 min to get to the beach and if you want to experience some authentic localism This is the place to stay :) i ate breakfast and dinner here every night , best rockfish i've had, really nice curry, fruitsalads and coffee :) i got a cold too when i was there, and they made me an ayurvedic tea, that got rid of it overnight!
They held a birthdayparty for 2 english girls, made a cake and offerd Nice arrack and birthday songs! So nice! I was also driven to galle, to get to the atm, i was out of cash ( no atm in unawatuna!) so really, This was a 3 night stay that i will remember a long time ! Please do remember, in Sri lanka in general everything is in Sri lanka time:)

Room Tip: So i know the new rooms are better, but my room nr 6 wasn't bad at all

As other reviewers have said, the rooms at SurfCity are basic, but clean and acceptable for the price. The staff were friendly, but we didn't use any of the extra services offered (like tours) or the restaurant, so can't comment on those. However, we would recommend that you look elsewhere for your stay in Unawatuna, as the location is not really ideal. Unawatuna is a U-shaped bay, with the nicest beach and centre for restaurants etc at one end. SurfCity is in the middle and while it is a seafront hostel, it is not on the beach which has disappeared due to erosion. The restaurant presumably used to be on the beach, but is now next to a small drop into the water. You cannot walk to the main area along the beach anymore. As a result, you need to take a short tuktuk ride (200rps) or a 15 minute walk through the backyard of another hostel to get there. This is not obvious on maps of the bay (eg in the Lonely Planet) as the erosion was obviously recent. It's not a huge issue, but enough of an annoyance that we recommend you look elsewhere first.

Surfcity guesthouse is a good address for backpackers on Unuwatuna beach, litterally on the beach, with clean and tidy rooms. No AC nor hot water but at fair price. The local restaurant serves pretty good food (dinner and breakfast), nice and friendly people. Thanks a lot to Ajith for the road trip to Mirissa and good advices.
Hope to visit again
Thanks

I spend two nights here for only 1500-2000 rupees a night (off season) and had a good time here. After one night I changed my room to the newer part of SurfCity. Ask if there are rooms free there, to have even a better stay. The food is also good. They even showed me how to make a good fish curry and coconut sambal.
The beach is just a few minutes walk from here. If you want to dive, you can just go to the divingcenter across the street. Enjoy!

Good rooms that are clean and a good size. AC & hot water if you want in some rooms, other rooms are just as pleasant with fans. 2 floors with ocean views, wifi and friendly staff. Great restaurant on the ocean 'surfcity black & white' fresh tasty food. Will be back as always.
