“Hope to find a "Kingfisher hotel" on our next vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2012

If you are looking for a nice hotel on the beach, rooms with high comfort, great service, look no further. Kingfisher has everything you could ask for. We stayed 14 days at Kingfisher in two of the hotel's four rooms. The rooms are tastefully decorated with a balcony overlooking the beach. The staff at the hotel are very helpful and do a fantastic job. Duminda and Christina, who runs the hotel, helped us with everything we needed during our stay.

(Please note that the only bad review Kingfisher received on Tripadvisor is from a person who didn't stay at the hotel)

We stayed at Kingfisher Hotel for 7 nights and loved it. Having checked out all the other beach front properties, we can say without reservation, that the Kingfisher Hotel is the most beautiful place to stay on the entire beach front. Well worth the additional $.

The rooms are gorgeous. The beds were a great design, very clever and functional. We slept so well with comfortable matress and lovely sheets. The view...oh the view. Overlooking the entire beach, from our room on the top floor it was also very private. It was easy to spend hours sitting on the balcony, just watching the ocean.

All staff were fantastic. The owner Duminda, was friendly and hospitable. And Namal, who looks after the rooms provided exceptional service and we enjoyed his artistic, origami-like bed making each day!

There was two downsides to our stay here. The first was there is no door on the bathroom/toilet. It was nearly a deal breaker for us to stay here.

The second was no wifi in our room. We were on the top floor, so difficult for the wifi signal to reach us through all the concrete. It was a bit of a hassle having to go downstairs to use the wifi. An in-room safe would also be welcomed.

We enjoyed sitting in the chillout zone under a big cabana in front of the beach. Kingfisher also has a great bar and restaurant. Sam the barman makes the best Pina Colada we've ever had.

The restaurant makes excellent breakfast (not included in the room rate) and we had many meals in the hotel as well. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient. The food was always delicious, we highly recommend the restaurant. Between Kingfisher and nearby Hot Rock, you won't find better food in Una.

Couple of other tips during our stay:
We hired a motorbike for 500rp per day, which made getting around really easy. Although tuk-tuks are readily available. Be aware though that it is very dangerous on the road with all the crazy bus drivers, overtaking like maniac's. We nearly had numerous collisions.

If you are interested in surfing lessons, Surf n Lanka in Weligama is recommended. This guy was fantastic - really patient and know's how to teach.

Best exchange rate is Galle, behind the bus station - in a jewellry shop.

We stayed at the Kingfisher Hotel for a total of 8 nights, from the outset our experience was fantastic, a lot of credit must go to the owners and especially the staff who were beyond all expectations with their attitudes and attention to detail (keep up the great work guys!).

The booking process is incredibly safe, Christina handled our booking with effective and concise communication.

The rooms are incredibly clean, modern and spacious, not to mention the panoramic views from the balcony which are just stunning. WiFi, Satellite, Mini-bar & AC are all available in the rooms.

A great addition to this hotel is the Kingfisher restaurant, which is by far the best restaurant we ate at in Unawatuna, we noticed people from other hotels would come back time and time again to eat there.

We would strongly recommend this hotel, if you're heading to Unawatuna make sure you consider staying at the Kingfisher, it's definitely the right choice.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms are a little bit more expensive but are worth it for the views.

kingfisher is a great place to stay - stunning rooms with good big balconies, great staff, and an ideal base when staying in gorgeous unawatuna. booking in advance from abroad can be hard work - the sooner they accept credit cards the better, but other than that the place is faultless and worth the money (which is probably more than you would pay elsewhere in sri lanka but it's boutique living for sure!). loved loved loved it and had much fun, highly recommend :)

To be very personal:
Dear Duminda,
we had a comfortable and relaxed stay at your extraordinary well designed boutique style hotel. Thanks to the spacious and well-appointed rooms, your friendly and courteous staff, your excellent restaurant and last not least our personal contact with you we enjoyed our 9 days stay to our entire satisfaction. Keep on with your efforts, especially for the improvement of your beach area and the relocation of the restaurant.
Wir kommen gerne wieder.
Bis bald
Cheers Claus + Claudia

Very clean rooms. Large room with large balcony.
Nice sea+tree view. Stuff is generally OK.
Good food at the restaurant.
Hotel is a bit pricey and breakfast is NOT including in room price.
And there is a bar with always some people around.

Now this is a place full of life! The restaurant makes great and unique dishes, excellent seafood. Theres a beach lounge perfect for chilling out, watching the ocean and relaxing after a swim. The bar is funky, cocktails are ace and the music is always good/eclectic. The room wing is fabulously new, tasteful and stylish and rooms provide an amazing view over the ocean. Most of all the staff and management is very friendly and welcoming. What more can I say, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay:)!
