Just back from 12 night stay in Sri Lanka. We were keen to visit some beach side restaurants (we were staying in Koggala about 15 minutes away by Tuk Tuk) and read brilliant reviews previously about Kingfisher so decided to try it out for ourselves. The setting was idyllic with candle lit tables set on a small sandy part of beach next to the beach bar, casual laid back place with surprisingly attentive service. Aside from the fantastic setting the food is the star of the show in particular the fresh caught seafood. Brilliant simply cooked food we sampled on 4 occasions. Staff were friendly and the service was excellent. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Will be back next year. Message to Kingfisher, please don't change a thing - you're doing everything right ! Thanks for a great time....

We stayed here for one night and the room was the nicest we had on our whole trip. Room was very nice and super clean, nice large bed. Bathroom was very nice with a sea view. Only four rooms so nice and quiet. Really nice large balcony to the sea with comfortable chairs. Staff were helpful and nice. Food was very good.

This was booked after much research for hotel accommodation in Unawatuna. The hotel is located at the far end of the beach which is quiter although at weekends at night a close by cafe bar turns into an all night music venue with fireworks ...two choices join in or get ear plugs. The beach front is very private with direct access to the water with sun beds and just set back slightly an eating area where you can enjoy breakfast and lunch. There is evidence of last years demolition of buildings on the beach on the left hand side and a large blue ship freight container on the right hand side. These are a bit unightly but the privacy and lovely beach to the front make up for this. The hotel itself is very clean and the bedrooms maintained to a very high standard by the staff. Their is a lack of hanging storeage space for long term stays. We did ask for more hangers and 4 were provided but with no draws or cupboards a lot of our clothes remained in the cases. The restaurant was very friendly and the food of a good standard. We would have loved to have seen some typical Sri Lanken meals on the menu as the chef was clearly very capable. This is a lovely little hotel probably one of the best in Unawatuna and we enjoyed our stay very much which was for nearly two weeks. One tip the pink tuk tuk outside the hotel, use him every opportunity he is a great guide and will make your holiday with some of the trips to Galle etc.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but top floor probably best

We found this hotel on Tripadviser, read the reviews and booked ......... it did not disappoint !!
Fabulous location for a lazy beach holiday .... the whole atmosphere is relaxed, everywhere is spotlessly clean and modern, the rooms are beautiful ......the staff are a great team, friendly, helpful and extremely efficient and to top it all the food is the best in the area. Not forgetting the cocktails !
Our pick-up driver from the airport was also our tuktuk driver throughout our stay, he took us to nearby Galle recommended a place to buy spices in the busy vegetable market, also the area of Colombo Rd which is the (Hatton Garden) of Galle. He also took us to a Tea Plantation stopping on the way to show us a Turtle Farm, pointing out where the Stick Fishermen fish, as we drove inland he showed us Water Buffalo, Cinnamon trees, Rice fields and lots more information on the area, stopping whenever we wanted to take pictures.
We would thoroughly recommend him, named Prussand with his immaculate pink tuk tuk !
Ask Namal at the hotel to book him for you.

We did a lot of research for accommodation in Unawatuna and this one just popped up at the last minute and we are so glad it did. Compared to other hotels and guest houses in the area this if by far superior. It's only a small 4 room boutique property and is often booked out so I suggsest booking in advance. We discovered many people trying to get a room only to be disappointed. Their website displays availability and it's also avalable on Agoda however the prices are pretty much the same around $120 a night in peak sason.

The room was large and spotlessy clean. I was told that housekeeping actually spend an hour servicing each room. I walked in one day to find 2 houskeepers, one doing the room and one polishing taps in the bathroom. The cleanliness was second to none. All rooms have great views over Unawatuna Beach.

What really makes this hotel a first choice is the staff. They are simply wonderful and work very hard to make your stay comfortable. Staff are multi tasked so you will see them often in different areas and form a friendship with them. They are truly a credit to this hotel.

The restaurant is a popular place and often a booking is required for busy nights like weekends. Its right on the sand and the food is devine. There are no Sri Lankan options but more Western fusion/Thai selections. The tuna steak was excellent.

Breakfast is not included but very good. The omlette with the works is perfect. The amount of toast you get with each order is immence, basically half a loaf of bread.

The small beach is unfortunately a little rocky but 2 doors down is a great spot to swim. This did not detract our stay what so ever as you are in a great location and its only a short few meter walk to a better beach.

My only regret about Kingfisher is posting this review as it may make it more difficult to book next time.

We stayed two nights here at the end of our holiday and it was a lovely place to relax. The hotel is of a high standard with fantastic clean rooms. Great balcony overlooking the sea. The restaurant was very good and we ate here both nights (splashed out on the lobster - could never afford it in the UK!). It gets busy as non-guests come for the seafood so we reserved a table, suggest you do the same if you plan to eat there.

The staff we very friendly and attentive. Great service.

There is a beach bar and chairs/tables just above the water line. There is very little actual beach here, certainly not kid friendly, just not big enough. It is a little rocky so swim rather than wade out. Pleasant for just relaxing on the sun loungers though.

20 min tuk-tuk ride to Galle, which was a great place to visit.

There are no ATM's in Unawatuna, nearest in Galle.

We would stay again.
