“Peaceful, relaxing and beautiful setting”
Reviewed 12 January 2013 via mobile

We booked the Lazy Lizard following a last minute cancellation from our first choice of hotel... What a happy change of plan! This really was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning setting in a village just outside Unawatuna, surrounded by trees and paddy fields. As mentioned by another reviewer a real highlight was to relax around the pool in the early evening, listening to monkeys calling to each other and monks from a nearby temple chanting.

Our room was spacious and comfortable and came with a fan, air conditioning and a small safe, as well as a partitioned off seating area between us and the pool. For us the location (a 10 min drive from the main beach area) wasn't a problem. The hotel staff were generally helpful in ferrying us and others to the beach by car or tuk tuk, and once we'd identified a couple of landmarks we were able to explain to a local tuk tuk driver how to find the hotel on the only occasion we needed to organise our own transport. Although like others here, on arrival our driver had trouble finding the hotel, a phonecall en route to get directions was a big help.

The only slight issue for us, was that the location of our room (on the path that other guests used to walk to and from the restaurant / hotel entrance) meant a bit of a lack of privacy, as the wonderful large windows / glass doors weren't completely covered by the curtains - not a huge deal though and not a problem if other guests are considerate.

Finally - the Sri Lankan meals cooked by the local staff absolutely made this stay for us. As well as being delicious the food was incredibly varied, and staff were more than happy to cater for a vegetarian diet.

Top tip - make sure you visit the stunning temple en route to the beach. It's within walking distance from the hotel and is carved into a rock face.

We stayed at the Lazy Lizard Hotel in September,2012 to celebrate a very special occasion with family and friends. The experience was incredibly enjoyable.
The staff could not have been more genuinely happy to help, smile, be of service..the room was clean and the pool area was tidy.
Honestly, I have stayed in some of the nicest place in the world. This place does it right.
I would like to return some day and i could gladly recommend this Hotel to anyone.

We loved staying in this hidden paradise boasting 2 pools! It was so peaceful, we saw monkeys hanging around the trees while we ate breakfast. The hotel is set about a 10 min drive away from the beach amidst rice paddies. Even though the second half of the grounds is under construction, it didn't take away from the charm of this place, the rooms where lovely and clean and the breakfast a feast to look forward to every morning! Great value for money and hyper friendly staff!

This is the second time that we have been guests at Lazy Lizard hotel and we were very happy that it still has the same charm even though it went through so many changes.
After our first stay we've returned home with a lot of nice memories. We have gone on many trips of our choice provided by the hotel. I would recommend the whale watching tour and the rainforest trip at Sinharaja.
We have now stayed at the freshly built bungalows which were very comfortable and here we were more remote from the other guests than the first time. Though sadly now we have not seen too many monkeys.
Since we had a great stay, we recommend Lazy lizard hotel to everyone who enjoys peace of the nature

Room Tip: Both rooms I have stayed in were just as good. I could have chosen any room at the original part of...

The hotel has the potential to be an ideal location but poor facilities let it down. The new apartments do not have adequate electricity supplied to them, resulting in power failures and air con insufficient. Our friends rooms did not have a fridge or any working air-con. Loss of water supply on occasions also a problem. The management speak little english and seemed unwilling to address or accept responsibility for the problems when raised. The 'restuarant' if you can call it that is poor with little option and high costs - it was much cheaper to eat out at local restuarants and the breakfast provided was often cold and lacking in anything other than fresh bread. The bar was often closed and when opened did not have a variety of drinks or sufficient supplies. The prices being charged do not reflect the facilities available

Hi,

Thank you so much for your honest opinion and comment about our place.I am the new manager in Lazy Lizard, and we have been improving service and facility to meet our guests' needs. We are a new business and we wish to grow healthily following all comments and opinions. So sorry about your bad experience and impressions, we have already installed an electricity generator, and increase the shower capacity in the upper suites where you have stayed also. As these are suites these contain only fridges, downstairs rooms don't. Cleaning service works on request, as daily staff do not have access to roomkeys, just to avoid any further misunderstandings of entering a private zone of our kind guests. Please if you are around come by for a drink or frappuccino, and I hope you will see the change with your own eyes:) Have a great day.Cheers,
Sylvie

Nice and simple.
People in charge don,t speak English -not helpful
Poor breakfast
A/c didn't work in apartment
Continuous problems with electricity
Water kept going off
Site not completely built with several half finished buildings
Pool ok as long as you don't mind unclean water.
Completely open about ripping us off with pricing - over for the test match

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

This place went far beyond our expectations in terms of location-absolutely in the middle of nowhere-facing rice terraces, not a sound to be heard except nightly chanting from the Buddhist temple and monkies moving through the trees. Serene and calm. All that we were looking for!! It was the details that hampered our stay. It took a substantial amount of time for our driver to find the hotel, this after asking literally a dozen people for its location. Yes, it's off the main road and way back on a dirt road, but there is not ONE sign-not one off the highway and not even one of the gate of the place-crazy. A perfect place to stay if you're in the witness protection program. There are 4 rooms side by side facing a pool, with outside space side by side. As we were the only guests, this wasn't a problem, but if there were other guests, you might not find the tranquility you seek. I did have an issue with beds-I sunk down in a trough and did not sleep well while at the Lazy Lizard. Breakfast comes with the room and was good. Since walking down the road to a restaurant isn't an option, one probably eats lunch and dinner at the Lazy Lizard. Lunch is limited-tuna sandwiches, beer, and a couple of other items. Dinners varied-one night there was a ton of food and pretty tasty, another night much less food and not so tasty-there is no menu for dinner. The rooms weren't all that clean, the hot water heater for the shower held about 3 liters and barely served one shower-plan accordingly. While checking out, they handed us a fact sheet on the hotel and we were surprised to see that one free trip per day to the beach is part of tariff-wish we had known this when we checked in. One day we went to Galle and asked if we should leave the key, we were told not necessary, but surprised to return and find the room had not been cleaned, and beer mugs and bottles from the day before were still on our terrace. The two young women who were taking care of us couldn't have been nicer, but I think they were a little over their heads. Despite all the above, the Lazy Lizard was tranquil and we did relax, which was our goal. Unfortunately, the other stuff got in the way. It's too bad, as this place has great potential for those seeking an out of the way place without television, wifi, telephones and all the rest.

Room Tip: Only four rooms and they are side by side-each one is identical. I guess getting the room farthest...
