I was in this hotel since 19.09 to 27.09. The hotel have a good location-1 min to ocean. The room is spacious and good furnished. There are a very responsible stuff at reception and restaurant. Tastyand varied food. Good wi-fi connection. I spend here very good holiday.

We were staying at Comran Beach Hotel from 24th August 2013 until 26th August 2013 (checked out in the morning). I must put this whole episode online so that no other traveler has to ever go through this experience.

Firstly as promised on the website Wi Fi is NOT available in the common areas of the hotel. It is only available in the reception area of the hotel. When this was notified to the manager he stated that the restaurant on the floor above was not a common area and hence Wi fi would not be available. He was least bothered to sort out our problem and was very rude and not willing to listen at all.

The TV in the room we were staying (sea facing room on the top floor) gave a message that "no reception due to non payment of bills" when we called the reception to inform regarding this they said they would look into the matter and there was no further action from their end to resolve this problem.

On request for fresh towels the following day, these were not provided to us. When we asked the manager he apologized stating that they were short staff. This was absolutely not acceptable.

At the time of check out when all these issues were again brought up to the manager he very rudely stated that these are all problems out of his control and he can do nothing about all these things. If that is the case then why is he the manager at all if he cannot resolve guests queries.

Finally an argument developed between the manager and all of us to which he raised his hands on us including the ladies. There was also a bald guy with a mustache who was supposed to be the so called Restaurant manager who lifted the chair to hit the ladies. However he was stopped by his own staff.

We were not allowed to leave the hotel and we demanded that they called the Police. However this was also not done. Finally after a long wait of almost 4 hours we were allowed to go after being held prisoners in that hotel.

Please note that this is an absolute true story and the reason for me putting this up is so that no other person has to ever go through this ever. Not even anyone's worst enemy deserves this kind of treatment.

The manager only acts like he is there to solve the problem but in reality does nothing. He is only sweet on the face and is capable of nothing. Before he allowed us to go the bald guy (restaurant manager) was apologetic about the incident and stated that he was under tremendous pressure and hence he made the mistake.

I would say that any guest going to this hotel is at risk of bad service and a high possibility of being held as prisoners all over again. I would not recommend this hotel to any one.

The breakfast is delicious

The rooms are really big with AC

The views are awesome

Just 10 minutes away from restaurants and pubs at the beach, crossing the main road.

People very friendly

The downside: You have to ask specificly to have your room cleaned....

Well, I was lil apprehensive about booking in this hotel after reading average reviews on agoda and other website. When, I reached there, I was offered a complimentary drink with a water bottle..The room I got was pool facing and it looked pretty from room,,Room was dot clean and overall at that price it was a great room...Specially when breakfast was also free with the room....I liked the hotel and shall recommend it to others considering that other side hotels were charging double than this hotel..Just 2 mins walk from the beach add icing on the cake...They even let me stay 2 hours extra than check-out time....

We booked to stay for 5 nights here but ended up staying for 2 more. We got a low rate on Agoda and the hotel was clean, had a really nice pool and all the staff were really really helpful. It's not in the main part of unawatuna but its almost nicer as its quieter and it's a 4 minute walk to the main beach/ resorts.. Would definitely recommend.

My sister and I stayed at Comaran Beach Hotel twice. The first time was for five nights just before Christmas 2012. We had a big, beautiful room overlooking Unawatuna beach. We had such a great time that we decided to return for new years eve. The second time we stayed in a beautiful room with an elegant feel and a pool view. It had a large, newly renovated bathroom and comfortable, private balcony. Overall, our experiences here were great. The staff were not only friendly and helpful, but also willing to go above and beyond to ensure we had a good time. We couldn't believe how fast room service was for tea and water, it felt like as soon as we hung up the phone there was a knock at the door! They provided fresh beach towels everyday. Although, the hotel is located on the main road you just need to cross the street to gain access to the furthest end of the beach and then it is a five minute walk to the main strip along the water. At night the tide comes in so you'll have to take a three wheeler back but it only cost 200 rupees or less than $2. We would highly recommend this hotel!

I have spent there 5 days to attend a 3 days meeting with partners coming from different countries - Italy and South Asia, a group of about 25. Basically we were the only guests of the hotel, beside a few others.
I had shared the previous comments on TripAdvisor with the organizers warning them. The reviews was then shown to the management. Maybe because of that, we had no such bad experiences like others reviewers.
The hotel was previously Lavendish Beach Resort. See the website www.lavendishbeachresort.com.

It is not super-fancy hotel, more an average, the 3 bullets should actually be a 3-and- a half, taking into account the price, which was very much reasonable (low season, single room with a/c: 4,400 LKR = 27Euro=33USD: though I think price was negotiated for the meeting).
I am not quite sure whether you can find a better deal around, all considered: I have seen much more modest places at a higher rate. At the end, everyone of our group found it a good hotel and I was not reported any complain.

Now the details.
The hotel's name does not sound familiar to all the locals, maybe because it has changed; no the spelling is agreed, someone call it Cormoran/Comoran/Comaran... Anyway, just to give a direction, it is on the may road form Galle to Unawatuna, opposite to the Sun&Sea hotel, on the east side of Unawatuna bay. Now, you cannot miss it.
The hotel IS NOT on the beach, which is just 50 mt. across the road. Easy to flip-flop over there and come back for dine, anyway. The beach is peppered with any sort of restaurants and bars.
In 10/15 min. walking on the beach you can reach Unawatuna happeining part, it takes longer if you go by the street, better to take a tuk-tuk, available close to the beach.
Galle and its Fort are 10 minutes by tuk-tuk.

As others reviewers have noticed, the building(s) seems to be designed by Escher, it is a labyrinth of stairs.
My room was a good, comfortable one, on the last floor with a small, pleasant balcony over the swimming pool; far away from the street, not noisy. The room, with A/C,Sat TV and fridge, was clean, some of the finishes (details) just ok . WiFi is NOT available in the rooms: you have to go down to the lobby. I have seen other rooms and all seemed fine. There is also a separate cottage close to the swimming pool with two bedrooms and a kitchen.
On arrival I was offered a fresh juice.

An area with a pool is on the first floor.
The swimming pool was pleasant and it was cleaned everyday, though I am not sure the filters were working all the time.

Restaurant on the second floor enjoys a views on the bay, though the street makes it sometimes a bit noisy. Breakfast (toast, eggs, tea, coffee, butter, jam, fresh fruit) and meals, both on buffet, were ok. The management was able to accommodate the different taste of people coming from so many different countries and nobody complained -though nobody found the meals anything super-remarkable.
Did not try anything à la carte though... as I said you have plenty of choices around.
Restaurant service was a bit too slow.
Room service was faster, kind and effective.

We have not experienced any unconcern from the management nor from the personnel: I thing the place has improved and the initial warning I shared came to an use. The manager even proposed to organize a BBQ on the swimming pool as a social dinner.
Finally: all considered it is a good, budget choice in Unawatuna, which has the swimming pool and rooms cleanness and simple style as a plus. You can enjoy your time by staying here. If you go crazy for boutique hotels, design and more frills this may be not your place.

Room Tip: Rooms 217-217 look over the swimming pool and have a small balcony with chairs and a coffee table. R...
