We took a risk by booking the hotel months ahead of its opening, going by the (presumably mockup) photos, email conversation with the owner Vinodh and basically gut feel. As I was travelling with my family of 10, including children ages 9 to 21, I was extremely nervous as our van pulled in into the property. We were pleasantly surprised. Clearly a lot of thought, care and personal touch went into ensuring this small boutique hotel delivered on its promise. From well-appointed huge bathrooms, each with its own jacuzzi to the sizeable balconies with recliners, chairs and a table, each with gorgeous views of the private beach and the sea. With the waves lapping just about 50m from the balconies, the sound of the waves were therapeutic.
The common areas were also well done. No airconditioning needed at the windly lounge areas and dining areas, a nice pool table providing opportunities for bonding with my kids.
And finally the service - we met the owner Vinodh and his wife, who were obviously (and deservedly) proud of their place, the hotel manager Reny and his staff went out of their way to ensure our stay was not just comfortable but thoroughly pleasurable. Being a small property with 12 rooms, most of the staff got to know us personally. We were on half-board which included dinner with a selectable set menu, but both Vinodh and Reny told us we could request "anything" from the chef, just tell him in advance. And the chef actually followed up on this by seeking us out to find out what we wanted. We put this to the test by ordering a crab dinner and the chef totally delivered - twice! And the breakfast could be had anytime between 7 AM to 6 PM!
I am not sure whether all this special attention was because we were one of the first guests, but I sense that the team at Coco Bay Unawatuna was truly proud of their place and sincerely wanted to please.
To be sure, there were some kinks which is not to be unexpected with a property opened barely two weeks ago, but it was overall a great experience, worth repeating. Highly recommended!
