“Nice and cosy hotel”
Reviewed 17 November 2013 via mobile

It has nice and cosy ambience. Rooms are good with private beach and small pool. Breakfast was well prepared. Nice location near to Galle city but away from the city noise and bustle.

CoCo Bay Unawatuna is one of those rare gems that you come across on holidays. Unawatuna has become increasingly chaotic with the increased tourism, but you hardly notice it at CoCo Bay. The hotel itself is new and artfully decorated, with wide open plan areas facing the ocean. Its a place where you can relax in peace and comfort, and where you can leave the hustle of Galle Road behind. We booked the Aqua Romance package which is a large room with a huge bathroom and its own private pool. Each room has its own pillow menu and a unique soap menu (the coconut soap is highly recommended). We were met with a welcome tropical fruit platter, and following a delicious lunch, spent the afternoon in the pool. At dusk, we walked to the adjacent beach (turn right from CoCo Bay's private beach) to watch the fishing boats coming in and to see the fisherman haul in the day's catch. Then a delicious dinner on the deck under the stars. There were no empty tables on the deck when we arrived but the staff were fabulous and created one for us without even being asked. Breakfast was also on the beach with an amazing 4-course feast. Quite simply, this is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. The staff were polite, attentive and went above and beyond to ensure you had a great time. The service was exceptional. We will definitely be back to this wonderful hotel, but in the interim, my bar of coconut soap will have to suffice!

Loving the life here at Cocobay. No need to set that alarm clock - get breakfast when you like (up until 6pm) Lovely rooms attentive staff. Great watching the fishermen come in. Wouldn't recommend walking into the surrounding area wasn't all that friendly but the hotel it's self is fault less loved the soap selection and our free cookies. Flowers on our bed. Great manager excellent at his job as are his team.

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful hotel. The location is fantastic and the staff are so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. If you're looking for a relaxing break definitely come here. We stayed here 5 days and that was the perfect amount of time.

We stayed at Coco Bay for 4 nights at the end of our family holiday to Sri Lanka. The hotel was lovely and modern , the rooms are really spacious and the staff were particularly good at accommodating our 4 children especially in the restaurant, even the chef came out to our table to check we were pleased with our food. The location whilst lovely and quiet and good for using for as base for a couple of trips is not ideal as the views are disappointing.

We found this hotel via Trip Advisor, and stayed here as a result between 23/10/13 and 28/10/13, and stayed in the 'Ocean Privilege Suite' on the first floor.
Upon our arrival, and drive into the resort, we were quite taken a-back as to its surroundings. There is a cement factory on the other side of the road, and some of the buildings you pass approaching the hotel make you question the hotel's location, as it is very off putting - which has been previously mentioned by other comments on Trip Advisor below.
However, when you enter the resort, it is lovely and clean. Check in was effortless, and the hotel facilities looked attractive and the décor is simple but beautiful.
Our room was lovely and huge! Very impressed! The air conditioning worked a treat, and the bed was super comfy! We had an incredibly large balcony, which we used a lot to watch the view and sunsets, and the Jacuzzi bath was great! The en-suite was brilliant, with great use of a glass wall to make good use of the view over the bay when you're having a shower!
We had a half board stay - which you need, as there isn't really anything locally restaurant wise to go to, unless you head into Galle.
The food at the hotel was good - but the portions were almost too large for us, and we hated having to leave some of the food. I think perhaps a 3 course set menu would be better - or just make some of the portions on the 5 course set menu smaller in size to really be 'a la carte'.
We had no complaints with the standard of food - it was all lovely. We didn't do the beach BBQ, as we were happy with the set menu, but we did pay a little extra one night for some fresh lobster. I prefer my lobster to be steamed, rather than grilled, and it had too much garlic and salt on mine and detracted from the taste of the lobster a little, but we still ate ours.
The hotel is only 1 year old, and is trying very hard. The service from the staff was great, and Sirisa's cocktails at happy hour were amazing! We loved them!
I think if the physical structure of the bar were to change, so it opened up into the lounge area, I think more people would use the bar, as its in a very closed square shaped room, but it is air conditioned, and a nice retreat never the less.
I think the hotel would do well in building a pool-bar - as to get drinks on the beach, or when your sun bathing is a bit tricky.
The beach wasn't the best for me, and I do agree with previous comments about the cleanliness of the sea water from the over spill of the local river, and the seas were a bit strong, but we didn't mind this so much, and just made it fun for us.
I did see staff cleaning up the beach most mornings first thing to clear up all the litter that was washed up - and at times I have to question the location of this hotel for all I've mentioned so far, which I why I don't think its 5*, but more 3.5*, at a stretch 4*.
There is some back ground noise from the cement factory, or at least we think it was from here, and it was like a dull, low key type of noise, and didn't come from the hotel's kitchen, and certainly nothing like music.
We did enjoy our stay here, a little disappointed as we did expect more from the reviews on Trip Advisor, but sea views can only count for so much. I wouldn't recommend this hotel, only due to its surroundings sadly, as I don't feel its the hotel it advertises itself to be, but the staff were great, and hotel room lovely.
Sorry, but we do have to be fair. If I could pick up the hotel and move it elsewhere we would!

Room Tip: Ocean Privilege Suite - great views & v.large room!

This is a very nice hotel and the staff are very friendly and accommodating, and although we only stayed two nights, we were allowed a late check-out and we were also able to use the hotel facilities for the rest of the afternoon at no additional cost. However there are a number of negatives that detract from the overall experience. Frankly the hotel is built in the wrong place - alongside a river, so you are bathing in anything put into the water upstream (and lots of unmentionable things are), and the currents are so fierce that it is dangerous to try to swim from the beach. It is also not pleasant to travel through a shanty village to reach a luxury hotel. We requested a single bed, and although there is one in the rooms, this is built-in and is much too small for an adult; and although the open-fronted restaurant is picturesque it is windy, and food is inevitably cold when it arrives. The food was also not of a high quality. Like most tourist accommodation in Sri Lanka, the price was too high for the value of what was provided.

We are sorry you had a mixed experience at the resort. We would like to clarify a few points.
The COCO BAY is located in a typical sri lankan fishing village with all its associated charm and not in a shanty town.
May and June are the peak of the monsoon months , the time of your visit. This is normally the period with the highest rainfall and strongest wind. Seas around the entire south coast are not safe for sea bathing during this period. Hence this does not only apply to the COCO BAY. The stream too is at its full power during this period which affects the quality of the sea..However after the rainy period there is hardly any inflow from the stream which drastically improves the quality of the sea which is confirmed by so many of our guests enjoying a sea bath.
We hope to welcome you back to experience the COCO BAY away from the monsoon period.
