This may be the 13th review on here but you wont be unlucky if you get the chance to stay here. The owner Mark is a professional landscaper and it shows. The house is a masterpiece of design and comfort with a beautiful infinity pool that also allows you to swim lengths. If that wasn't enough Kemul the chef is fantastic and Randell the house manager will welcome you with a smile all day long.

I stayed in Sergeant House 3 months ago and I have not wanted to write this review as I do not want people to discover it!! This places is truly suberb and what makes it so superb is the house, its architecture, garden and the fantastic staff who work there. The great pool and pool bed is not too bad either!! I stayed in Sergeant House at the end of my holiday to Sri Lanka for 6 days and it was the best part of my holiday as I completely unwound and relaxed there. The house is not too big therefore there are not many guests. The open plan living and kitchen area makes the environment so relaxed and social (if you want to be!). The staff were extremely friendly and were extremely relaxing to be around. They were part of what made the experience so great. The house is across the road from the beach and Andre and the staff know GREAT restaurants in the area. I am based in Sydney and my partner and I have said that we would choose Sri Lanka of other holiday destinations in Asia. We plan on returning next year and will definitely be coming back here!! I recommend you choose Sergeant House.

This is the 1st Tripadvisor review I have ever chosen to write...

I had made a reservation at another Unawatuna Hotel, when I idly scrolled through the photos of the top 10 so called Bed and Breakfasts in Unawatuna, and found something exceptional - Sergeant House - a spanking brand new Hotel. As a round-the-world traveller, it takes something quite different to catch my wanderlust eye…

I googled Sergeant House’s website which I believe is the top Unawatuna website because of its great attention to detail. In particular, through original photographs. Eg A local Sri Lankan tea estate in the South, and the Buddha of the Rocks, which no other Unawatuna Hotel websites featured.

The magic website address is http://www.sergeanthouse.com/the-resort.html - spoil yourself - GO THERE NOW !!!

A SERGEANT HOUSE DIARY

Thursday 7 March 2013

For 12 guests.

But only the 2 of us: swimming pool, Givernesque Monet Lily Pond, Andree the Manager, and 3 Sri Lankan guys, all to ourselves!!

Andree the Manager is extremely interesting, multi-talented, and international.

‘Stewie’ the house dog: a wonderful Heinz, a rescued street pup, who rests head on knee or foot, and is very soft to stroke…

Friday 8 March 2013

Awoken at twenty to seven - call to prayer from Mosque Minaret? No. Buddhist Temple, up hill, chanting morning and night - at 6.30 am and 6pm, which I came to love!

As an aspiring Buddhist, we had great chats with Randal, one of the Sri Lankan guys, who is a devout Buddhist.

Divine banana smoothie for breakfast.

Our detached Swimming Pool Pavilion had 2 verandahs, one overlooking the pool, the other overlooking the garden, with 2 comfortable chairs on each; 5 sets of windows; 1 side of the Pavilion opens right up: 10 windows, 10 shutters, and 40 bolts!

White Breasted Water Hen, and Husband, with yellow stockings, plus 5 black balls of fluff - chicks, using the lily pad highway!

Took tuk-tuk to Seafair Shop - Signal toothpaste, peach nectar, Lemon Puff biscuits, Choco cereal…

Starlit swim, through tropical vegetation around Sergeant House…

Saturday 9 March 2013

Beautiful carved wooden fretwork at the top of shutters.

Very interesting, diverse art work: a painting of acid lime green paddy fields; a tiny elephant sketch; a print of Indian men, in long, wide skirted frocks.

Borrowed “The Witch of Portobello”, 300 pages, read it in a week - very good! Author Paulo Coelho, Brazilian, sold 85 million books, in 63 languages...

Very interesting conversations with Lambert, one of the Sergeant House guys: Centre Forward in the Sri Lankan National Hockey Team; formerly in the Sri Lankan Navy…

Sunday 10 March 2013

Divine papaya and pineapple smoothie for breakfast.

Tuk-tuk to Galle: gorgeous 1 and 2 storey Dutch Colonialist buildings - like Havana, Cuba’s Spanish Colonialist buildings, in miniature; treated self to Mango Moisturiser at shop Barefoot - smells so good, I want to eat it; perfect Mango Lassi at Arts Cafe…

Andree’s suggestion - Lighthouse Hotel: flames on huge rocks on beach; very fine Pina Coladas!

We love whizzing about here, there, everywhere in tuk-tuks!

Monday 11 March 2013

Lovely early morning walk on Unawatuna Beach: concrete foundations 75% or 90% gone, washed away under some buildings, with people sleeping on top?!

Austrian lady ‘Hildegard’, Chocolate Chip Biscuit Heroine: feeds 12 Beach Dogs, every day, for 2 months, on holiday. German Heroine: sends 500 Euros a month, for Beach Dogs for rice, sometimes chicken…

Tuk-tuked to fruit, fish and spice markets…

Swam and read at Sergeant House - our home for the week…

Exceptional attention to detail eg two, not the normal one, spare toilet rolls!

Treated Manager Andree to supper to say thank you for her genuine care, friendship…

Tuesday 12 March 2013

Andree’s suggestion - Kahanda Kanda Tea Estate and Ambalama - FABULOUS!

Tea bushes tumbling down the hillside, with small palm trees planted in between… An Ambalama is an open sided pavilion, originally intended as a rest place for pilgrims. A very large, comfortable cushioned daybed affair at Kahanda Kanda … We led the high life for a few hours: I had a Pina Colada, White Russian, B52, and Banana Tarte Tatin; James had 2 Mojitos, and a Margarita; we enjoyed coffee table Architecture Tomes, in particular regarding Bawa, Sri Lanka’s foremost, tropical modernist, architect. We tuk-tuked there, we tuk-tuked back: through lime green paddy fields, with cows with personal White Egrets, set against Los Angeles movie palm backdrops.

Andree’s suggestion - Wijaya Beach - WONDERFUL!

At one end stilt fishermen - the stilt handed down from father to son: in the middle, surfers with BIG waves; and a wonderful lagoon at the other. As a big round orange sun set, we enjoyed life as Lagoon Creatures, with waves breaking over the reef - not us, with wonderous, tall, wonky palm trees bending over the sand and sea, dancing.

Wednesday 13 March 2013

“Stewie” Pup came bounding over, wagging his tail to say Good Morning, and lay between my feet…

Time to stop and stare: first two mugs of tea on our Verandah, overlooking the inspiring garden: a high Banana-leaf hedge; the sharp chip, chip, chip of a stripey chipmunk, beating his tail up and down excitedly?!

Suresh, one of the Sri Lankan guys, literally jumped on his motorbike to buy fresh brown bread for toasting for me, and was back before I had drunk my divine coconut smoothie.

Andree’s suggestion - The Buddha of the Boulders – BRILLIANT!

Enormous boulders resting on each other at crazy, impossible angles… A bright yellow Buddha, standing tall… Up the steps of a giant boulder, to behold another boulder strewn hill… An 1,800 year old Bo tree, like the Bo tree Buddha sat under.

2014

We can’t wait to return to the Swimming Pool Pavilion at Sergeant House because it’s an exceptional detached Villa for two, with an outstanding Manager - Andree, and 3 great Sri Lankan guys - Suresh, Lambert, and Randal who we enjoyed great conversations with - about Sri Lankan life, the universe, and everything, and, of course our very own wo-wo Stewie!!!

Room Tip: Pool Pavilion because it is detached.

If you need a place to unwind and relax this would be the place I recommend. This place was built with great passion. Every detail was taken into consideration to provide you a comfortable place away from home. Take a few books and some music, leave your communication devices switched off and cut yourself from the hassles of everyday life. Recharge your life with energy when you reconnect with mother earth and the sea which is just 3 minutes’ walk. I found the staff very friendly and hospitable. You can catch a Tuk Tuk ride to Galle and spend some time discovering the fortress and the city.
I will keep this place in my calender for another visit.

Seargent House, a piece of Heaven.  It is a magical place that can transport anyone to peace and tranquility. My experiece at Seargent house is one of romance, laughter, good friends, happy meal times, lazy snoozes in the sun by a refreshing pool and all stress left behind.
I recommend this accommodation without reservation and will travel there again knowing my vacation will be the perfect time away from it all.
The Seargent House offers an accommodation that exudes comfort at every turn.  The suites are spacious and decorated with panache.  The artwork and decor is pleasing to they eye and gives one a sense of tranquility.  Everything is spotless and the staff are most attentive.

It looks like one of those fancy luxurious villas in the high end Conde Naste travel mags but this is affordable for all. With the high-end decor, huge bedrooms, walk in showers, the infinity pool, the massage & steam room, the Balinese-style lounge and dining area with a dining table for up to 14, the beautiful gardens, the friendly staff and the shy and timid "Stuey" the dog, we all looked at each other and said "we don't want to leave the villa" during our short break. But of course we did. The beach is just across the road, with a couple of local bars (Happy Banana being the largest night-spot). Used the local diving center to arrange a boat trip to Jungle Beach where we snorkled in crystal clear water. Breakfast comes, a la carte, with platters of fresh fruit, great coffee, toast and eggs done anyway you want. The staff were so friendly and helpful and unassuming. If you want to use the kitchen yourself to cook or bake, no problem. There is wifi throughout the villa and there are TV's in every room but this is a place where TV would be the last thing you would want to look at. Galle Fort is a world heritage site and just 20 minutes or so away by tuk tuk and well worth a visit. Mrissa Beach is 30 minutes in the other direction. The staff can arrange transportation to anywhere. There is a small supermarket about 100 meters down the road that sells the basics and there is also a small Buddhist temple about 100 meters in the other direction - completely off the tourist trail so very peaceful and serene. Sergeants House is spotlessly clean, and mosquito nets are provided over every bed - essential at night. I went with a group of friends and we had so much fun, but whether you were going with just a "significant other" or the family, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this place. I will return.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great. No-one had any problems with any of the rooms. None of us used the AC as...

After driving through the very impressive front gates I experienced an OMG moment - that is - am I really staying here, everything was so beautiful. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and the accommodation magnificent.
The pool wraps around the buildings and the garden wraps around it all. The beach is just across the road.
Sergeant House is a beautifully restored old Police Sergeants House. The other buildings are all new and the everything is luxurious.
After a leisurely walk along the beach each morning we had a swim in the warm waters then returned to Sergeant House for a magnificent breakfast cooked by Andrée and her staff. One night we had dinner at a cafe on Unawatuna Beach and a turtle came out of the sea, made her way through the cafe to the top of the beach and laid her eggs while we all watched, then had a rest and went back to sea. What a wonderful experience that was.
Andrée, made us feel very welcome and was very imformative. She told us of the good places to eat, found reliable tuk-tuk drivers for us and helped us organise a trip to Yala National Park and Nuwara Elya in a comfortable car and safe driver - Calum. And what a wonderful three days that was travelling along the coast and through the mountains of Sri Lanka.
Andrée also has a good contact for silver jewellery and Sri Lankan gemstones.
Sergeant House isn't huge and doesn't accommodation a large number of people which suited us well. The staff are lovely young men and are friendly and helpful. My husband was very happy to have someone to talk cricket with as he was travelling with three girls.
We had a wonderful five days at Sergeant House and would recommend it to anyone.
