I stayed here for a short break whilst whale watching a shirt distance away in Galle. The couple who run the guest house are very sweet and let us put our bags there as we arrived early and leave them when we left late.
The room was very sweet, they had even taken a message from a family member of mine who knew I was staying to wish me happy birthday and arranged flowers spelling it out on my bed for when I arrived.
Good location, close to the beach.
I would definitely stay again when I return. Very good value for money.

What a lovely place! The rooms are clean and simply yet beautifully decorated; the apartment we stayed in had AC and hot water, as well as a quiet terrace looking onto the garden (which is bursting with flowers); and the crepes we had for breakfast are genuinely French and utterly delicious. I would go back for the crepes alone, but I also somewhat wish I lived here. Amazing place, the staff are delightful and friendly, the atmosphere is peaceful, and there is a very cute resident dog. Highly highly recommend!
Oh also the double bed in the apartment may well be the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. I went with two friends and we decided to all sleep widthways in the bed because it was so soft and large (we were also three small girls, but it is still impressive).

This place was like a heaven after rushing through Colombo, Kandy and the attractions on the island. It has a significant European feel about it and if you are European you will immediately feel as at home.

Cedric and Gaelle are fantastic hosts and they make perfect homemade jams. Overall the place is very nice, but there are several things you should know, one of them being that the rooms do not have sealed walls (this is an architectural thing) which means that the noise isolation etc. is not so good and also there is almost a certainty that from time to time you will find moskytos and a small lizard on your wall.

We enjoyed our stay despite this and if it does not bother you definitely give it a shot. The place not being directly on the beach is a good thing as the beach is quite noisy at some nights.

French lotus is a beautiful little guest house only a few minute stroll to the beach. The owners - Gaelle and Cedric have not missed a detail. The rooms are beautifully appointed and scattered with a gorgeous range of fresh flowers upon arrival. There is a large communal outdoor area with lounges and tables to relax on throughout the day and in the morning. The standard breakfast is delicious - each morning we were treated to different fresh juices, homemade jam, toasts and strong coffee. Advise to get a crepe also at a small extra charge - the Nutella crepe was divine. Absolutely beautiful place run by lovely young French couple (and their very friendly pooch and new monkey visitor). Definitely recommend this one!!

Room Tip: We stayed in a simple room downstairs - double bed without air con. The room was beautiful and the f...

Stayed at the french lotus for 2 nights in March 2014. We booked online the day before flying to Colombo from Nepal and Gael (the hostess) arranged at our request for a private car to meet us at the airport and drive us to Unawatuna. As it was 4am this was a very welcome service. The guesthouse itself is charming and full of Sri Lankan, and European character. The staff are friendly and everyone was very welcoming. The room we stayed in had a fan which was fine for us. Not sure if any of the other rooms had A/C however. Room was beautifully made up and was a great example of how to maximize the romance of a fairly basic room. Though not on the beach, It's only about 5 minutes walk away which gives you a good base to explore Unawatuna's back roads and check out some of the services on offer. Breakfast at the guesthouse was lovely and we were delighted to finally find somewhere that had good bread! Freshly squeezed juice and home made jams were a delightful addition to our tea and eggs. A great choice for a few nights at good value.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 1st floor which had a very nice shared balcony.

Ok, so I never write reviews. But, after staying in 9 different hotels in Sri Lanka this one stuck out. We booked online through another site and so didn't know what to expect. Our room was absolutely MASSIVE - bigger than most London flats! The bed was huge, and the first one that my feet didn't fall off the end. Beautiful breakfast with the most delicious home made jam. A really chilled out atmosphere. Easy to get to the beach (literally 3 minute walk). Oh - and a gorgeous little dog called Cusma who is always there to say hello!

I can't talk on behalf of other peoples experiences but we were totally chuffed - and it made our stay in unawatuna the perfect end to our holiday. French Lotus is certainly a mid range four star hotel - but with the current French couple managing it - gives a really 5 star experience!

We didn't actually land up staying at this place, but visited it, chose to stay elsewhere, and paid for 2 rooms for a night, hence feel entitled to reviewing it. We also landed up seeing a large number of other hotels/ guest houses because we had to look for alternative accommodation, and hence enough benchmarks for comparison.

So here goes: this was one of the nicest looking/ feeling guest houses of all the ones we saw in that area. It isn't on the beach, which could be good/ bad depending on what you prefer. The regular rooms are tiny - they would be cramped for a couple and claustrophobic if you have a child with you. This is particularly surprising given the generous sizes of rooms in almost all other places in that region., and the ample free space on the property itself. And finally, here's the big bummer: the rooms had no air conditioning, which was why we chose not to stay there. The owners contended that if the room description didn't explicitly mentioned "AC" then it meant that there was no AC, but I think that's balderdash - I think it's wholly reasonable to assume that mid/ up-market places in a city 6 degrees North of the Equator will have air conditioning, and that if they don't, they should mention it. Cost us a fair bit of money, and the inconvenience of having to look for an alternate place to stay after 6 hours of travelling with a toddler.

Summary: if the absence of AC/ small rooms/ 5-10 mins walk from the beach doesn't bother you, I'd recommend giving this place a shot; if any of those things make a difference, look elsewhere - there are many good options around.
