We had a really nice time at Strand over Christmas. Any slight reservations listed below should not detract from the fact that this is a great place to stay, and that we thoroughly recommend it.

Our room, 'the blue room' was delightfully set out, and all in blue as you might expect. However, arriving after a six hour tuk tuk on Christmas Eve, it was a little bit disappointing to find out ours was the only room without hot water. Perhaps this could be made more clear in the booking process? However, you get used to cold water showers in Sri Lanka so we soon got over it.

Unfortunately, in a very heavy thunder storm, our roof began to leak quite badly. It was pure luck that we happened to be in the room at the time. Had we not this could have caused bigger problems. Buckets and towels were made available though, and the room was cleaned the next day which was appreciated.

Breakfast is basic but very well done. For example the toast is made with very good bread. As a none egg eater though, an alternative option may have been nice.

All in all though a fantastic place to stay, the grounds are delightful, the local wildlife (and pets) great, and Asoka and his team pleasant hosts.

Thank you for your nice words about our home. Monkeys dislodge terra-cotta tiles on the roof often and we find out only when it rains. Sorry about that inconvenience.

We spent our last 5 days in Sri Lanka down at the beach at Unawatuna, staying in the Strand home stay guesthouse, looked after by Mr Ashoka.  My wife had seen favourable reviews on trip advisor and based on this booked us in.

We found Mr Ashoka to be a real character, full of tales about his Elvis fan club, or of his surviving the Tsunami that devastated the island in 2004.  However thankfully the guesthouse remained standing during this onsault and we found it to be a haven of peace and tranquility, bar the occasional thumps from monkeys as they jump from the trees to the roof and scamper across.  It's also very pleasant to sit on the balcony supping a beer and just absorbing the nice gardens the house is situated.  We stayed in the room called the nest, which was very spacious. The Strand is  about a 5 minute walk from the beach and is definitely a good choice, if you're looking for a place to stay in Unawatuna.  The only downside we could find was that the wifi was patchy and quite weak, but we'd found this to be the case virtually every-where we stayed in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: Ask for the Nest.

This is a beautiful guesthouse tucked away in a junglely garden with monkeys! The owners make you feel very relaxed and at home here and it is excellent value for money. We would definitely stay here again.

A gorgeous little spot tucked away off the beach. Run by a lovely couple who made us feel very at home. The rooms are big, clean and generally have a little private area/patio/balcony which was great. We only stayed one night before changing guest houses, though, as our room was right next to the staff quarters so staff were coming and going right next to our window quite late and early (and could see in our room at night when we had the lights on), the mosquitos were really bad here and all there was between the room we had (downstairs) and the room above us were floor boards so we could hear every sound made from the room above. Check out a few different rooms and perhaps stay upstairs. Breakfast was fabulous here.

Room Tip: Don't stay downstairs!!

We thank you for your Review and take note of your pointers, we have used a Sheer curtain only as thick curtains darken the room, however we will fix a second curtain that can be drawn back in the daytime. Many travelers appreciate the polished wooden floor in the room above to tiled or concrete floors, also we strive to maintain the antiquity of our ancestral home, which is our biggest draw. As this is not purposely built for tourism, we have to live with few lapses.
We provide mosquito coils, but many do not like the fumes.
We really appreciate your - - & + + points. ThanX

My wife and I stayed at Strand Guest House this week. We truly enjoyed our stay, the very hospitable staff, the key location just off the main Unawatuna beach in a quite area, and all at a fair and reasonable price. The furniture and furnishings takes you back to another time - large 4-poster beds, armoires, etc. - and the size of the rooms is more than you'd ever need. We asked for the typical Sri Lankan breakfast of dahl curry, coconut sambhal, string hoppers, and fruit - which was prepared well. My only warning to travellers is that most all of the rooms were designed pre-air conditioning, so open aired. It's welcome to have the fresh air but watch out for the mosquitos, etc. Each bedroom we saw had a very comfortable, non-intrusive mosquito net so not much an issue at all. Anyway, Asaka and the staff were so friendly and welcoming that I cannot say anything bad about the stay.
