“quiet hotel with great staff”
Reviewed 17 May 2012

we stayed at the flower garden hotel for 3 nights after a 10 day tour across the island. While we were there there was a major storm (destroying the temple-tree, washing away balconys of guesthouses on the beach..), so we were glad we weren't directly at the beach. It's only a short walk there though. The staff is really great, made us Sri Lankan breakfast the way we liked it (incl. items not on their menu).Food in the evening was also very good, way better than what we had at the beach..
The pool is nice for a bit of paddling and if you rent a cabana (which I recommend) you can just relax on your porch.
The massage was okay, but not as good as some others we had on our trip.

Room Tip: Cabanas over simple rooms

We stayed 2 nights in Flower Garden. I agree with the good reviews it has from other travellers: good food, friendly staff... but the general condition of the rooms is not so amazing. They would greatly benefit from a renovation: our jacuzzi was broken, the sink was loose, the doors are difficult to close.
For the price we paid, I expected better room condition. All the rest was good.

Flower gardens is located on the beach access road. It takes approx. 15min to walk to beach. Beach is beautiful. We stayed in a cabana family room. Rooms were very nice. Good pool for when you didn't feel like walking to beach. Food for breakfast, fruit plate and an egg/ toast cooked to your choice. We did half board and found dinner to have a good enough selection. Place had a quiet/ peaceful feel to it. We enjoyed our stay very much.

I stayed here with my wife and a group of friends while in Sri Lanka watching England play cricket.

It's a great place, lovely gardens, very friendly staff, nice pool, handy for the beach - would 100% reccomend it as a place to stay.

The only downside was the a/c could have worked a bit better.

Hopefully we'll be back one day.

Room Tip: The cabanas are great - ask for one of these not a room in the main hotel.

We booked for ten days on the strong recommendation of friends and the hotel exceeded our expectations. A beautiful and unique setting, a great location, excellent staff and service and superb food in the restaurant. Sassi organised our onwards tour and accommodation and did us proud, even calling to ensure that everything was fine. We had a truly wonderful holiday in the amazing country that is Sri Lanka and when we return, which we have vowed to do, we will definitely return to the Flower Garden. Thank you to Sassi and his team for helping to make our holiday so unforgettable for all the right reasons.

We stayed here for 6 nights after a week of travelling around Sri Lanka. When booking i was unsure whether to spend this week of relaxation in Mirissa (which I'd heard great things about) or Unawatuna (which I hadn't heard much about at all). The main reason i chose this place is that it has a pool (as a general rule I don't like the sea so a pool was a must!). I'm so pleased I did choose this place as it was absolutely beautiful. It's off the main road and is a short walk down to the beach, which was perfect as this meant that we got a chance to look at all the restaurants and things to do on the way to the beach. There was a slight mix-up with the rooms as i was originally told that there were only super-deluxe rooms available, although on arrival it turns out that we were in the deluxe room (we noticed there was no jaccuzi type shower) but they adjusted the price accordingly. This actually worked in a favour as we were after a standard room, but I wonder if they would have adjusted the price had I not mentioned it?!! The room was great (although bathroom door didn't actually lock closed) and we shared the balacony with 1 other couple, which was fine and a good way to share experiences and advice with fellow travellers. After a week of travelling it was quite refreshing to have somewhere with a safe, fridge in the room and best of all the pool. Our balcony overlooked a little 'house' and trees/river which was nice, although we occasionally got woken up by monkeys running across the roof! But it was great to watch them run across and jump into the trees. It was quite competitive when trying to get a sunbed so we had a few early starts when we wanted to laze around the pool! The pool was nice although a few more beds would have been good (although we were there after the cricket so i think it was probably a bit busier than normal). Staff were great, always said hello went walking past, and room was cleaned and bedding changed everyday. The food was great, huge portions and wide range of food. The only downside was that you had to have 3 courses (each main course came with soup or salad & dessert) so prices were a bit higher than other restaurants. On a final day Sassi (owner/manager) arranged a taxi to take us up to Negombo via the Mangrove Cave River Safari which saved us a lot of hassle in trying to arrange that, although the driver did seem to be a bit road-ragey! Overall it was one of the best places we stayed in Sri Lanka!

P.S. breakfast was included and we got a huge plate of fruit followed by toast, eggs and sausages every morning by the pool, a great way to start each day!

We stayed here after arranging to watch the test match and we were lucky to get a room in the hotel. we had hoped for a cabana which had been heavily praised on trip advisor.
As every one has said the staff were excellent and helpful, the stay was very good value and the food was well above average. Having said that the real star for us was the beach and all the restaurants lining the Indian ocean.
Every evening we strolled down the road, about 150 metres, and drank a beer watching the gorgeous sunset while the waves lapped at our ankles. We then ate fabulous barbecued fish at one of the many restaurants.
We ate our first evening supper at the hotel which was fine but not particularly memorable and then tended to eat on the beach in the evenings.
The breakfasts were very good with large portions of fresh fruit, toast coffee (or tea ) fruit juices and cooked eggs sausages etc. .
The gardens were lovely and the large pool a real winner.
Getting into Galle was easy as it was rare to wait more than 10 secs before a tuk tuk driver stopped to ask if you needed a lift anywhere.
We had stayed previously in some great boutique hotels and this hotel is in a different category, but I would like to emphasise it was much cheaper and the value was fantastic.
I would definitely go back but would definitely aim for a cabana, the room was rather tired but adequate. We tried to change but they were fully booked andtheir promises turned out to be triumph of optimism over reality.
