“A place to relax and enjoy great food”
Reviewed 11 July 2008

The location of Norlanka is not right on the beach, which is a great advantage if you want to avoid the noise from bars or the sea. The 200 meters walk is not a problem.
The food is great and the flexibility they show when it comes to making something special is fantastic. And all the food is prepared with northern European cleanliness standards, which is very important if you want to try out all kinds of food on the Island. We also had local Sri Lankan friends with us to visit the place and they loved the food too.
The rooms are delicate, clean and functional. What more do you need?
The best thing about the place is the hosts. They are just the most friendly and helpful people in the world.

This is a place you will love to stay at and hate to leave!

  • Liked — The rooms are clean and functional

I spent three nights at Nor Lanka and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Although set back from the beach, Nor Lanka looks the cleanest and best designed of the hotels in Unawatuna. Many of the beachside hotels looked shabby in comparison.
Helge and Anoma went out of their way to make my stay as comfortable as possible, and I was very impressed with their service. My room was spacious and extremely clean, the breakfast was the best I ate in Sri Lanka, and the home-cooked curries were fantastic. On my first evening I slept late because of jetlag and Anoma happily arranged a meal for me at 11pm. I was welcomed into their family, and I wish I could have stayed longer.

I wouldn't hesitate to return to Nor Lanka.

This is the best guesthouse on the South Coast. Very clean, comfortable with great hosts who go out of their way to make you feel at home. Safe and secure, reasonable price with easy access to the beach. What more can I say ....

We stayed at the Nor Lanka in May 2008 during our tour through the south of Sri Lanka. From all the hotels we stayed in Sri Lanka the Nor Lanka was not only the cleanest (by miles!) but also the friendliest which gave you a really homely feel to the place. The Nor Lanka does not have the extravaganza of a five-star hotel (swimming pool, ayurvedic centre, etc.) but if you are like us looking for a cheap yet clean without compromise place then the Nor Lanka is the right place. The owners were also very nice and accommodating.

The rooms have double beds with mosquito net and air con (with remote control). The bathroom has a shower and looked as if it was brand new. There are 2 big cupboards and a balcony. All rooms seem to get cleaned on a daily basis irrespective whether they are occupied or not to keep dust and bugs away (there were absolutely no bugs/geckos anywhere - rare in SL). The beach is within 1 minute walking distance, but there are no views to the beach from the hotel itself (though it is off the main road in a quiet location).

I would recommend this place to anyone whether they are on a tight budget or on honeymoon, you wont easily find a place as clean and homely as the Nor Lanka.

This is by far the best hotel in Unawatuna (I stayed at several before finding this one), and also the best value. Located just behind the horribly corporate Unawatuna Beach Resort (whose pool you can use), you are one minute form the sea, but are set in a lovely garden backing on to trees regularly visited by monkeys. The family that own Nor Lanka are just wonderful- we got ill whilst staying there and they looked after us fantastically.

The rooms are a decent size, clean and well presented, and all have a balcony, we sat and watched the monkeys playing from ours.

The food is absolutely excellent- much better than anything you can get on the beach

There is also satellite TV, free internet pc, and also wifi.

Stay there- you won't be disappointed!

The Nor Lanka was an amazing stay. The hotel is a new build and everything was immaculate. We entered out room to find new air conditioning, clean and tidy bed and linen and a romantic mosquito net to sleep under (shame i went with a mate).

The owners and other staff were fantasitc. They were totally service driven and keen to make our holiday as pleasurable as possible. We were taken out in the hotel tuk tuk to various locations with the hotel guide (at a very affordable price). The guide would be present to make sure we were not being taken advantage of by local sales people, hawkers and stores.

We loved the fact that we would order our dinner at breakfast so that they could source all the ingredients fresh during the day for a delectable feast at night. (massive prawn curries with rice papadoms, vegie curry and relish were about 500 ruppee or a bit over 2 pound. We even went a bit posh and asked for lobster one night and fresh crab the next. Staff were only too keen to oblige.

The amazing Unuwatuna beach is a lazy minute walk from the NorLanka making it an ideal location. At night you can watch the monkeys play in the trees.

I can honestly say that i couldnt find a thing wrong with the hotel or its owners. I was kinda said to leave but i know i will defininately be back very soon.
