Peacock Hotel
Ranked #21 of 34 Hotels in Unawatuna
Reviewed 6 February 2013 via mobile

The hotel is situated right on the unawatuna beach. Unawatuna is one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. The view of the beach from the hotel balcony is amazing. The food is tasty too. Rooms not too fancy, just the basics, but clean. Ideal budget hotel if u love the sea.

We chose the Peacock because our tuctuc driver brought us here (We knew he gets some money when he brings tourists). However, we had not much choice, as my travel partner hurt her back and was not able to carry her backpack, so we stayd. We were not really happy with the room, as the bed filled the entire room and there was no more space to move. Also, the only window we had was on the street side, from where you have a lot of street noice the whole night. The owner promised us to give us a better room from the second night on (we planned to stay 4 nights) with sea view. The second day, they would not give us a room with sea view, rather than just the neighbor room from our original. We said okay with one condition, we get a late check-out as our flight was scheduled for 3 am. and we wanted to go straight from Unawatuna to the Airport. The next days we noticed, that they were doing the same joke with all tourists. Giving them the worst room and promise them a better room for the next day, always telling they are fully booked. On our last day, they already reminded us in the morning, that we have to check-out at 11 am. We had discussion about the arrangement we confirmed on our second day. Later on, we just ignored them and left the room at 4 pm.

However, do not expect any favor (without paying money) or a friendly face from anyone of the staff. We saw much better guest houses for the same price on the beach or just the street behind.

Please do not stay at the Peacock!!!

Room Tip: You can get a nice room for 2500/3000 rupees if you choose not to sleep on the beach.

This hotel is run by rude staff and the room we were given had no working fan plus the shower is just a trickle and stuck on hot.

The worst of it is the nature of how the business is run. You are forced to pay upfront for your entire booking upon arrival. We were told they were just charging our credit with the deposit but they charged the entire 4 days worth. When we decided to check out early they would not return a cent.

I would plead with people to believe the other reviews on this site and look for other accommodation.

We agreed with them to stay only 1 night however they were pushing us all the time to extend. Next day we confirmed one night more, I wish we weren`t! In the morning we ordered a pot of tea, which was undrinkable but we were ready to pay without any argument. The waiter didn`t give back the balance (however the prices are already inculding 10% service charge) and when we ased for it he came back with half of the money. Then we complained to the owner/manager who just simply shouted at us and threw us at the remaining money. When I raised my voice, just asking "what kind of treatment is this" the owner almost hit me, my boyfriend tried to save me but immediately 5 or 6 people were around us and if some other turist hadn`t helped us we would have been hit. The owner shouted something like this: " if you were sri lankan I would kill you". Of course we left the place immediately.

Furthemore the food is terrible, you can not get any local food however it is listed on the menu.Let`s say the room is OK the view is nice to the ocean but you can not enjoy as there are table in front of you teracce. The worst is that the staff is unfriendly and aggressive!!
I would recommend to avoid this place.

Having enquiried about availability and viewed a room and said we would take it for one night we returned with our bags and were then told we had to take it for a minimum of two nights. Then we argued the toss the management agreed, we went to our room when the manager followed my friend to the room to continue the argument further away from his restaurant diners, she won the argument finally then we had to pay upfront. Nice location unfortunately a shabby down at heel room offering with an equally shabby service.

Room Tip: Try somewhere else

I am baffled by the appalling reviews of this hotel. Peacock is well-run, clean and friendly. I stayed between Christmas and new years and the female manager was always happy to help and chat with two clueless westerners. We paid peak season rates but were still pleased overall.

We stayed for 2 nights in peacock guesthouse and we had to pay the full amount in advance, after price has been set up with the hotel, including accomodation and breakfast.
On the 2nd day, the management sent us a waiter to tell us that the price has been reviewed since and that it will be increase of 1000 rps more, as we approach christmas. We told them that the price has been fixed already and that it wasn t very profesionnal to change their mind. Their answer was that we have to check out if we weren t agree. That s what we did before 11am, unless you ve got to pay one more night.
Few times on our way out to the hotel, we have been asked where we were going and. It was obvious that they expected us to have all our meals inside the place.
View was very good from room 17 on the top floor, overlooking the ocean, but not cleaned especially the bathtoom, hot water wasn t working.
We will never recommand this place to anybody with such a unprofesional behaviour and i will boycott it if i go back to unawatuna

Room Tip: Room17for the view, but noisy with the ocean just underneath
