“Nice guesthouse and lovely staff”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

We checked into this guesthouse after having spent a week and a half in the more northern parts of the country. Our driver did mention that this particular hotel is not on the main drag - Temple Rd - however we decided to book anyways as it was recommended in Lonely Planet. We were greeted by friendly staff upon our arrival and while it was a 15 minute walk to the beach, the views from our room were spectacular. The room itself was very spacious with hot water and AC all for a very good price (4000 Rs per night including breakfast). We were asked if we would pay upfront for our two night stay which we did willingly as we were allowed to see the room prior to paying. On our second night we enjoyed a wonderful dinner of curry, rice and prawns and as we were the only ones dining on the seaside patio, we chatted with the cook, server and owner for about an hour. The owner advised us that just six months prior, Peacock was on its very own stretch of white sandy beach - he showed us pictures. The government built a breakwater which caused all of the sand to move to the other side of the bay leaving Peacock practically in the ocean. Many of the reviews on this site state that this guesthouse is a backpackers option however with the incredible views, amazing food and friendly staff, we would highly recommend Peacock to all budget-minded travellers looking for a quiet place to enjoy panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

Room Tip: The views from the third floor private balconies are beautiful.

This place could be nice with a spruce up and a little friendliness. As it is, it's a bit tired and run down with broken doors, dodgy showers and cobwebs on the furniture. I also found the manager to be very miserable, always scowling at us as we walked past. He also put us in the worst room when we booked in advance even though the place was empty and there were much better rooms for the same price available.

The location used to be beachfront but the sand has all washed away so that the hotel now sits in the water. It's a long walk to the beach.

Breakfast was fine but dinner was very average.

On the plus side, you get a lovely sea view and our fan room was nice and cool with the breeze and powerful fan. The four poster bed was comfortable.

In summary, it's ok for a budget option but it's probably worth looking around elsewhere. Check out all the rooms if you do go.

We stayed here for four nights in a top floor room with a big balcony and paid 1500Rs a night. The room was beautiful, spotlessly clean with a four poster bed and mozzie net. The bathroom was clean with a cold shower. The views from our room were amazing and the sunsets were stunning. Everyday we could see sea turtles right near the shore feeding on the ocean floor and surfacing to breath. They have a nice little restaurant to get cold drinks and food and the manager is really friendly and helpful. Hey have two gorgeous dogs called lassie and jossie which we enjoyed petting. The main beach area is a walk away but you can short cut along the beach and through a resort rather than walking around but we enjoyed the tranquility of this area away from the busy beach area. We swam right in front of the hotel and the water is clean and warm. Overal a great place to stay in Unawatuna Andrew have nothing negative to say about it.

Clean backpacker hotel right on the water at Unawatuna - If you're looking for beachside this is it. Staff are very friendly, ensure that your fluid levels are well maintained and can arrange tuk-tuk drivers and tours to southern beaches and Galle. 10-15 rooms on offer - basic but good for backpackers. Good option and well priced. Try to "drop out" for at least 2 weeks here. Bring a few books, sunscreen and a thirst.

In this hotel, we liked very much. The head of the hotel was very nice to us. The staff was excellent, friendly, kind and helpful! I think that some reports are overly negative. The owner guests to behave around as they to him. We are experienced with him a nice dinner at the table. We had a nice conversation and it was fine. Rooms here are for money very nice. Beautiful views of the beautiful beach. Nearby, there is plenty of places to visit. For example, Jungle beach, turtle farm and various others. Every recommend this hotel. We were happy here. Good cuisine.

We agreed on staying here after checking out a few other places in the immediate vicinity but unfortunately for us they were too pricey. Right off the bat the gentleman showing us the room told me off for not coming straight to his place, then made me feel uncomfortable for the rest of the stay.. rolling his eyes every time I would come through the restaurant or back from the beach, pestering for payment on the spot even though at the time his card machine was down.
Our room was full of ants and I couldn't work out what they were going for as we had no food in the room. The rooms themselves smelt musty and even with the windows open and fan turned on full, it was stuffy to sleep in.

The location is good, walking distance to everything on the beach.

As someone else said... this is a very - go out all day and come back to sleep - kind of place. This place has so much potential!

The hotel is situated just in front of the lovely Unawatuna beach. The location is perfect. Do not expect anything fancy it’s just a clean and tidy low budget small hotel. Food is not so great but can’t complain. Noisy during the night since there are few clubs nearby.

Do not forget to bargain before agreeing on the price !

Room Tip: You may request to check the rooms before selecting. Some has AC and some rooms are none AC. The qua...
