Sri Gemunu is well located by the beach, with some spectacular landscape (rocks, sand and waves are impressive). there is a close-by mini-lagoon so there it is safe for kids, but the beach is not very practicable during the summer. The staff is one of the key plus of the hotel, super friendly and efficient.

In the lowlights, I have to mention the rooms (very old, half-refurbished bathrooms, small and old beds, A/C not really tunable), the noise of the railway station (and the waves, but that's OK) and the distance to Galle. There is a really nice pool but it is a 15 min walk from the hotel (a first time in my life...). The wifi/internet did not work most of the time and that was really an issue for us, as we needed to access information.

Room Tip: Don't go to the top floor as it is noisy - there is a train line close to the hotel and the trai...

I give 5 stars to everything in this hotel. Excellent location, food, great rooms and service. But there aren't enough stars to give to the people - the hotel staff, for their kindness, friendliness, hospitality and much more. I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of August after we had done the round tour of Sri Lanka. The day before the departure I badly injured my leg on the Unawatuna beach. The hotel staff did magnificent job and helped me go through the day. They immediately called the doctor, took me to hospital, arranged everything for me there and stayed with me all the time. Hereby I would like to THANK everyone for their help and extreme gentleness - the hotel owners, the staff, the doctors and nurses. I would like to express my very special gratitude to MRS PADMINI, the hotel manager for taking care of everything, for being with me, chatting with while we were waiting. She gave me enough strenght and positive energy to go through the painful experience. She is a very special, brilliant lady.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Sri Lanka but what will always stay in my mind and my heart forever are the people!!!
I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone who wants to enjoy the scenery, great service, delicious food and the warmth of the people!

Sri Gemunu turned out to be the best place to spend our honeymoon (end of July/beginning of August). Situated on the best and most scenic spot of Unawatuna beach (away from the main crowds), Sri Gemunu offers great rooms and services. The staff are simply brilliant: they will do anything to make your holiday as good as possible. We were there just before rain season and had beautiful weather. From the beach side terrace we could even enjoy the playing around by local monkeys and turtles swimming in the sea: magical! There is a calm lagoon 100m up the beach from the hotel where you can swim in the sea. If the beach is not your thing: Sri Gemunu has a private pool, a ten minute walk away. There you can also enjoy massages and pampering baths which the resort offers. If you want to explore: the town of Galle is just 10 minutes away by threewheeler (which will cost you about 4 euros). Feeling more adventerous? The staff are happy to help organise a tailored trip for you. We did a four day trip throughout the country, going on safari, take a train ride and visit the elephant orphanage. This was all perfectly arranged by the staff and all we needed to do was get in and out of our car. The staff and the driver speak very good English, so nothing gets lost in translation and they can provide a lot of background information on the country and its secrets. In short: if you want the perfect holiday in Sri Lanka: Sri Gemunu is the place to stay!

Stayed here for 3 nights in December 2011.
Pros
1. Absolutely stunning location next to the Beautiful beach.
2. They have a reef that is brilliant for snorkeling. The best place to snorkel for beginners as the reef is almost like a virtual swimming pool during low tide.
3. Very good hospitality. The owners are nice people, So is the staff.
Nice clean rooms overseeing the Beach.

Cons
1. Food was a bit of a let down. Its not bad but everything else around is so good that the food just lacks a wee bit to complete that wonderful experience. But overall, Nothing less that 5 stars.

Room Tip: Choose the sea facing rooms on the top floor towards the left of the resort while facing the sea.

We stayed with 2 kids in chalet for 10 days in end of March. Chalets are located in the middle of Sri lankan village 15 mins walk from the hotel inland in beautifully and meticulously maintained gardens with swimming pool and spa (try warm oil 3rd eye opener and hot steam treatment). Morning jogs on the village road is a great way to see the real life of locals and keep fit. Hotel staff is very friendly, and head of staff (for the lack of better word) Padmini was extremely helpful and caring. Hotel would send a car to pick us up and drop off to/from chalets. Breakfast had limited choice, you should ask for buffalo yogurt and other additions, the servants are nice but wouldn't talk too much due to limited English.
The beach is a highlight - great views and the lagoon about 200 meters to south provide ideal place for kids and adults swimming, little snorkeling. The white restaurant on the beach in front of laguna offers great oven-baked pizzas and generally good food. You can trust hotel to organize trips - they have been reliable and helpful. Planning to return again.

If you can stay in the chalets. We had 4 nights here. We arrived on our wedding anniversary and our driver who dropped us off let the staff know. We had booked half board and on arrival to dinner that night we were greeted with a lovely table on the beach front with a complimentary bottle of wine and Seafood Platter. The staff where all very friendly and could not do enough to make our stay worthwhile. They also made us a cake for our anniversary.

Chalets are very up market about a 1km form the main hotel but the staff will pick you up and take you to the main hotel. We liked the walk before and after breakfast but choose to be picked up and dropped off after dinner. Some dogs aroundon the road but they weren't a problem. There is a swimming pool at the chalets.
Main hotel right on the beach front but might be a bit noisy from the busy road in front of it. Not so at the chalet very quite and peaceful in beautiful gardens. Would highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Choose the chalets

We are just back from a week at Sri Gemunu. We had a lovely time. Small friendly hotel. The staff are very sweet and helpful. Hotel arranged a great trip for us to Yala National Park to go on safari, stay overnight in Tissa, train journey (not to be missed) into the misty mountains and view the tea plantations, tour a tea factory. Our driver was a mine of informatuion. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country. Daily life in the streets is so interesting. Galle is good to explore and our friendly tuk tuk driver was helpful polite & reliable, if a little pushy, but everyone has to make a living!. We found a nice beach bar just a few yards from the hotel (Wiyama or something like that) nice spot to watch the turtles playing/feeding, if you are lucky like we were, with a sundowner cocktail or cool beer.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms may have better view - hotel can advise - we were on 2nd floor
