“The best part of a Sri Lanken experience.”
Reviewed 21 July 2013 via mobile

We stays at the hotel only a night due to time constraints. Instantly we regretted not dedicating enough time to the place. The room we had had amazing views over the sea and a great balcony and 4 poster bed whilst the food and staff were of a great standard an very welcoming. We even saw turtles in the sea!! The sea itself could be rather choppy and requires an element of caution as to where you swim. Although this was the only possible flaw in the hotel. Overall a really good experience.

I spent a week in Sri Gemunu Beach Resort with my girlfriend. It is a beautiful hotel at Unawatuna Beach near to Galle owned by friendly Sri Lankan brothers. Not only the owners but also the staff is very hospitable. The food in the restaurant is great, especially seafood. The room rate includes both breakfast and dinner. They also organize different tours and excursions all over the country.

We prebooked this hotel for 3 nights through Aruna, one of the owners but based in Germany.
He arranged a driver to pick us up from The Pearl Grande in Colombo who arrived early so that was a plus. Aruna had advised us by email that the hotel was booked out for the third night so we stayed up the road in the hotels chalet .
Upon our arrival ( taxi fare about $USD 75.00) we were greeted by Asoka, Arunas brother and another brother who runs a gem shop in the hotel. Now came our first unusual experience- the building is 3 floors high but has no lift. We found nearly all the hotels that we stayed in were all 3 story with no lifts, except in Kandy - Not too sure if its a cost saving concept or what but most people would baulk at having to climb any higher. Our room was on the first floor in the centre and had A/C , a good view and plenty of room.Another feature was the bathroom, also very roomy as most of the hotels that we stayed in were.

We had a good ocean view and could see turtles about 100 meters off shore.Fishermen on their poles turned up and we saw them catching a few fish. The food was good, service great and our room was clean.
Only two negatives were
1 Only one TV channel- we had to ring reception to get another channel and were given a choice but still only one channel at a time. Weird to say the least
2 No internet in the room so down to reception to send /receive emails etc. This is another annoying trait that we found all around SL.
Both these issues need addressing.
Our third night was staying at the chalet, about 900 meters from the hotel and set in amongst native bush. Very roomy, quiet and peaceful. We had an excellent swimming pool to ourselves
and tea coffee facilities in our room . A phone call to the hotel had a van come and pick us up to have our meals although the walk to the hotel would be ok if not for the intense heat.
Again no internet and the Tv dish was dead so no TV- Still no big deal but you would expect these issues to be resolved.
Cost for two nights at the hotel around $ USD 100.00 a night plus food and drinks $USD 22.00 a night plus 10 % F & B service charge. The chalet $USD 120.00 for the night

The other plus for us was that Asoka organised a 10 day tour with driver for us around southern and central SL. Our driver Upale was superb- courteous, obliging and drove at a sedate speed throughout our tour. All up, a good experience so well done guys!!

Room Tip: Down stairs dont have A/C apparently. Better view upstairs

Pros:
The location: it's extraordinarily beautiful, and charming to boot. Directly in front of the hotel you can't swim because dramatic boulders cause the water to swirl in dangerous currents. but you can potter down and check out the crabs and other weird wildlife scuttling around the rocks, and see the fisherman on their poles. if you are prepared to walk 50 yards to the left you'll get a lovely sandy beach, partly protected from the sea by a reef, which makes a kind of natural swimming pool. The water is quite clear (though not crystal clear - just the sand being flicked up i think) and you can see lots of fish if you want to snorkel. Huge turtles were there with us, bumping up and down in the waves. Fireflys abound.

it's quite friendly, the staff were tolerant of our wild children.

cons: yup - the food isn't the very best. but hell, it's only food, and it's not bad. next door there is a really top notch restaurant you can go to. lastly, it isn't that cheap and plus they do take a fairly hefty cut on transport. Even if you accept the offer of transport from the airport for convenience sake, would suggest you sort out onward travel yourself. But that isn't a slight on the hotel - you don't have to use it if you don't want to.

Alround, if you're going to unawatuna, and you should, this is the place you want to be.

Room Tip: they all seemed nice

We had 4 good nights - and days - at Sri Gemunu and really enjoyed the stay. The key word is the personal contact that the staff maintain with the guests - it made a very pleasant ambiance. The room we had was good and lived up to our expectations within this hotel category. The only thing that we missed was a gym facility - perhaps an idea the management could take up in the future.

We've been back from Sri Gemunu Beach Resort for just under a week now and we really miss being there.

From the moment we arrived we were met by fantasticly friendly staff and no one stopped smiling or saying hello for the whole duration of our stay. From the owners to the bar staff, the chefs, the cleaners, reception and anyone else i haven't mentioned, they were always happy to see you.

Every room at the hotel has great sea views and the hotel itself is in a great location. The sea right outside the hotel can be rough but is safe to get in and cool off. If you want something a bit calmer though there is a section of the sea, about 50 metres left from the front of the hotel, that is protected by a reef and is very still and calm.

We ate every night and every day of our stay at the Sri Gemunu and we found the food to be excellent. The currys, fish, prawns, calamari etc we had for lunch were always very tasty and good value at between £2-£3. The evening buffet was also very good with lots of choices and the drinks were also good value. There was nothing better than sitting outside after an evening meal with a drink in hand, listening to the waves crashing down in the background. The staff also set up a special table for my birthday and made me a chocolate birthday cake! Our stay here is the only holiday we've been on were neither my wife or I have been ill with a stomach bug of some sort. Just shows that the Sri Gemunu are doing something right with the food preperation and general hygiene.

We wanted to do a tour around parts of Sri Lanka whilst we were there and the hotel organised this for us. They organised a 5 day tour that took us to Yala National Park, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. It was one of the highlights of any holiday we've been on and we got a driver with a mini bus, all fuel, train tickets and half board accomodation at different hotels. I believe they can organise a tour for as long or as little as you want and i would definately and highly recommend it.

For £50ish, per room per night, this hotel is an absolute gem. Half board, fantastic staff, great location and much more. We miss Sri Lanka and the Sri Gemunu and would highly advise anyone to visit both. I hope we return one day.

We stayed at the Beach Grove Villas, which forms part of the hotel, 700 metres away, but had dinner once, lunch a couple of times, and drinks and beatutiful beach side relaxation many times, within the hotel and the grounds and private beach area.
It was amazing to learn that the hotel was destroyed (along with every other property in Unawatuna), on 26 December 2004 by the sunami but, the rebuild has, once again, provided a wonderful beach side retreat.
The hotel is run by one of the 4 brothers all of whom certainly know how to treat their visitors
A must visit place sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: If the hotel is full try the Beach Grove Villa run by one of the brothers and family
